Discovering The Virtual Fingerprint: Analyzing Embodiment, Immersion, And Player Personality In Video Games, Benjamin C. Bower Jan 2016

Discovering The Virtual Fingerprint: Analyzing Embodiment, Immersion, And Player Personality In Video Games, Benjamin C. Bower

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis set out to explore embodiment, immersion, and personalities in massively multiplayer video games (MMOGs), in particular how players become immersed in a virtual world. Immersion is a focal point in the gaming experience in which players communicate directly with the digital medium. Scholarship has argued that games have specific immersive qualities that draw players into them including storytelling, social and emotional reasoning, among others (Calleja, 2011). Each player has a particular preference as to what immerses them the most in a game. In addition, research has concluded that gamers have unique personalities that they portray while they embody …

Embodied Knowledge And Accessible Community: An Oral History Of ‘Four Rehearsals And A Performance', Liam Oliver Lair, Ashley Mog

Gender Studies Faculty Publications

In this article we discuss how an oral history project emerged through our involvement in a collaborative, creative project at the University of Kansas called Four Rehearsals and a Performance (FRAP). FRAP utilized improvisation in dance and music, bringing together community members across ability to explore how knowledge and community are created. Our analysis explores themes of embodiment, community, and how participants experienced the space of FRAP. We first describe how FRAP became a project, and then we discuss how our oral history project emerged as part of FRAP. After providing specific examples of themes and experiences shared by our …

Crimes of the Heart (2016) - Lighting

Lighting for this show created a nostalgic feeling in the kitchen as well as a false sense of safety and privacy from the swirling world of rumors and gossip outside. A sunset that penetrates through the windows of the house, moonlight that calms and focuses with the revelation of facts, and a sunrise that violates the kitchen in the same way as before were the bigger vocabularies of light used to help tell this story.

African American High School Girls' Perceptions Of Dance-Based Physical Education And Sport-Based Physical Education, Kimberly Ann Maljak Jan 2016

African American High School Girls' Perceptions Of Dance-Based Physical Education And Sport-Based Physical Education, Kimberly Ann Maljak

Wayne State University Dissertations

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2013), over the last 30 years childhood obesity has doubled in youth ages 6-11 and tripled in those ages 12-19. Furthermore, obesity trends are higher among minority females, specifically African American (AA) adolescent females. Lack of daily physical activity (PA) among youth is a key factor in rising obesity rates (National Institutes of Health [NIH], 2013; National Physical Activity Plan[NPAP], 2014), with a significant decline in PA among the AA female population (Kimm et al., 2002). Given what is known about the decline in PA among AA adolescent females, (Ennis,1999; …

Limited Time: Meeting Judge Expectations And Pedagogical Standards In Rhetorical Criticism, Jessica Benham Jan 2016

Limited Time: Meeting Judge Expectations And Pedagogical Standards In Rhetorical Criticism, Jessica Benham

National Forensic Journal

Since the creation of Communication Analysis/Rhetorical Criticism as an event in competitive college forensics, forensic research has critiqued the depth of analysis in Communication Analysis/Rhetorical Criticism speeches, with many arguing that effective analysis was impossible due to the ten-minute time limit. Considering this criticism, spanning three decades, I argue time has come for an increase to the time limit, allowing students to more effectively analyze artifacts, to better understand the methodology they employ, and to make changes to the structure of their speeches in response to the critiques of other scholars. Such a change would increase the educational impact of …

The Teaching Of Creativity: Process, Product, Environment, And Assessment, Todd T. Holm Jan 2016

The Teaching Of Creativity: Process, Product, Environment, And Assessment, Todd T. Holm

National Forensic Journal

Teaching creativity is an issue gaining more attention. Businesses and universities alike are looking for ways to promote creative and innovative thinking. As universities look for ways to teach and assess creativity, interscholastic speech and debate competition should be held up as a model for such efforts. Through a combination of iterative performances, the mastering of domain knowledge, an environment that encourages/rewards creativity, and feedback based on the Consensual Assessment Technique, forensics offers an ideal environment for students to learn the process of developing creative products.

Inroads To Outrounds: A Hofstedian Approach To Newcomer Integration Into The Culture Of Forensics, Chad Kuyper Jan 2016

Inroads To Outrounds: A Hofstedian Approach To Newcomer Integration Into The Culture Of Forensics, Chad Kuyper

National Forensic Journal

This study examines how newcomers to forensic competition in intercollegiate forensics integrate themselves into the larger community of competitors. Specifically, this study takes an intercultural approach and frames the forensic organization as a culture unto itself into which new arrivals must assimilate. To shed further light on this culture, this study determines where members of “forensic culture” are positioned on Hofstede’s cultural spectra. By modifying Hofstede’s original Values Module Survey and administering it to current competitors from around the country, insight can be gleaned into the cultural attitudes of the forensic organization, and the values that guide the practice of …

Improving Reading Fluency Of Elementary Students With Learning Disabilities Through Reader's Theater, Tami S. Schoen-Dowgiewicz Jan 2016

Improving Reading Fluency Of Elementary Students With Learning Disabilities Through Reader's Theater, Tami S. Schoen-Dowgiewicz

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Elementary teachers in a school district in a western state expressed concerns about the reading achievement of students with disabilities (SWDs). SWDs were not developing decoding, comprehension, and fluency skills to become proficient readers. Without mastering these skills, SWDs will experience diminished academic attainment in their school career. To address this problem, teachers in elementary learning centers (LCs) within the district implemented Reader's Theater (RT), an evidenced-based reading approach that incorporates repeated readings using drama-based activities. The purpose of this qualitative bounded case study was to explore elementary LC teachers' use and implementation of RT to improve reading performance with …

Traversing The Terrain: Paths And Roadblocks To Conscientization In Forensic Competition, Alyssa Reid Jan 2016

Traversing The Terrain: Paths And Roadblocks To Conscientization In Forensic Competition, Alyssa Reid

National Forensic Journal

Paulo Freire (1973) articulated the notion of conscientization in his groundbreaking book Pedagogy of the Oppressed as the faculty of observing contradicting messages communicated by overarching power within societal, political, and economic structures and second, actively opposing oppression in those structures. Intercollegiate forensic competition is often the place where students are provided an outlet to achieve conscientization. The profound process or speaking problems into existence not only develops the competitor but provides a unique opportunity to spark further critical discussion. However, the conversations often remained trapped in the speech world. Therefore, it is important to expand the scope of our …

Jesusmania!: The Bootleg Superstar Of Gettysburg College, Devin Mckinney Jan 2016

Jesusmania!: The Bootleg Superstar Of Gettysburg College, Devin Mckinney

Gettysburg College Faculty Books

In 1971, an illegal performance of the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar was staged at Gettysburg College. It was the spontaneous project of students, professors and a renegade seminarian. Performance rights were being negotiated, when suddenly legal action was threatened against any group staging the work before its Broadway premiere. The cast and crew put the show on anyway, and many hundreds attended. But the outlaw production drew the college administration and the Lutheran church into controversy. Drawing from original documents, recordings, and interviews with the cast, this book tells the behind-the-scenes story of the production.

It Will Turn Vicious: An Exploration Of The Cycle Of Audience Ridicule In French Drama, Stephanie C. Elfont Jan 2016

It Will Turn Vicious: An Exploration Of The Cycle Of Audience Ridicule In French Drama, Stephanie C. Elfont

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The intent of this thesis is to investigate the prominence of audience ridicule in the French theatre from the medieval sottie to Ionescan Absurdism of the mid-twentieth century. Throughout the history of French drama, playwrights have exploited this tactic with either the purpose of invoking an emotional or intellectual response or inciting a social or political call to action. This exploration takes particular interest in shaming theatrical audiences during periods of political unrest, analyzing the ways in which playwrights employed language, studies of characters, and plot-related content to highlight the prevalent and pervasive ills of society and of humanity. The …
