Crimes of the Heart (2016) - Lighting
Lighting for this show created a nostalgic feeling in the kitchen as well as a false sense of safety and privacy from the swirling world of rumors and gossip outside. A sunset that penetrates through the windows of the house, moonlight that calms and focuses with the revelation of facts, and a sunrise that violates the kitchen in the same way as before were the bigger vocabularies of light used to help tell this story.

Sensory Screens, Digitized Desires: Dancing Rasa From Bombay Cinema To Reality Tv, Pallabi Chakravorty
Sensory Screens, Digitized Desires: Dancing Rasa From Bombay Cinema To Reality Tv, Pallabi Chakravorty
Dance Faculty Works
Bombay cinema incorporated songs, dances, choreography, staging, and costumes from a variety of traditional forms to mark a modern national identity. The pioneering figure for using dance in films was Uday Shankar in his experimental film Kalpana. Bombay’s spectacular song-and-dance cinema then moves through films such as Chandralekha to contemporary Bollywood and its byproducts such as dance reality shows. The search for aesthetic modernity in India is embodied in the concept of “desire” as it evolved from traditional aesthetics to contemporary culture and new media technology; to uncover its evolution from Bombay cinema to reality show, I first analyze …
Devising Performance & Queer Futurity, Brendan F. Leonard
Devising Performance & Queer Futurity, Brendan F. Leonard
Honors Theses
This project argues that devising performance is an inherently queer and utopian form. In response to recent political movements, such as Occupy Wall Street and Black Lives Matter, which seek to stage dissatisfaction with the systems of late capitalism, I turn to devising performance as a site. Informed by the queer and performance theories of Jose Esteban Munoz, Lee Edelman, and Jill Dolan, I argue that devised theater allows us to process disillusionment, rehearse collectivity, and stage futurity. In conversation with Munoz, I define futurity as an imaginative site that considers what will follow what some scholars suggest will be …

The Link Between American Deaf Culture And Dance: Assessing Nonverbal Communication And Recognizing The Value Of Deaf Dancers., Chloe Edelstein
The Link Between American Deaf Culture And Dance: Assessing Nonverbal Communication And Recognizing The Value Of Deaf Dancers., Chloe Edelstein
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
As a dancer, it is of the utmost importance to know the history behind the origins of movement with intent. In a collegiate setting, we are immersed in the different styles and origins that have shaped the refinement and adaptations of dance into the genres that it exists today. But, I have recognized a lack of knowledge in one extraordinary facet; dance performed by those who are deaf. With this project, I have educated a group of dancers on the different aspects and struggles of being deaf within America and through the creation of a dance that mimics the rehearsal …
Perceiving Dance: Examining The Foundations Of American Ballet And Influence Of The Press In Establishing Today's Perception Of Dance, Robyn Jutsum
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
The 20th century for dance brought forth some of the most iconic names and choreographic pieces to date. This time period also introduced the U.S. to the potential for the arts, with attention from the press guiding dance’s way into the public eye. A major focus was the idea of being American and discovering what being part of America meant and could mean in the future. Establishing a uniquely American identity became a goal of early pioneers of dance in the U.S., and the emergence of the Ballets Russes spurred development of American ballet. As American ballet found its footing, …
Movement And Music: Exploring The Relationship Between Movement And Dance, Savannah Dunn
Movement And Music: Exploring The Relationship Between Movement And Dance, Savannah Dunn
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
This thesis will examine the goals of dance performance, the craft behind choreographic art, and their respective relationships to music. As it would be impossible to rewrite the discourse and philosophy of dance or reach any concrete conclusions in that regard, I merely aim to present some of the primary theories surrounding this topic and discuss the roles they took on in the dance I created as part of this project, titled Ash Fighting Balance. I worked with a composer, Harriet Steinke, over the course of the 2015-2016 school year to choreograph a dance in three parts. I conscientiously pursued …
Realistic Acting Methods In Non-Realistic Theatre: Konstantin Stanislavsky's Theories Applied To Bertolt Brecht's Epic Theatre, Taylor Galloway
Realistic Acting Methods In Non-Realistic Theatre: Konstantin Stanislavsky's Theories Applied To Bertolt Brecht's Epic Theatre, Taylor Galloway
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
The path to understanding Bertolt Brecht’s Epic Theatre in any theatre history class is often paved in terms of its contrasts with Konstantin Stanislavsky’s realistic theatre. Two of the most influential theatre practitioners of the 20th century, Brecht and Stanislavsky, are presented as polar opposites and as essentially incompatible. For instance, one learns that Brecht theatre intends to turn its spectators into critical thinkers, to prevent them from emotionally identifying with the play in anyway, and to present them with a picture of the world- recognizable yet strange. Conversely, one learns that Stanislavskian theatre intends to turn its spectators into …

An Economic Study Of The Illinois Shakespeare Festival, Tyler Stacey
Honors Projects
Since 1978, the Illinois Shakespeare Festival, or ISF, has been an important cultural attraction for the Bloomington-Normal community. What once started as small scale performances of classic theatre on the tennis courts of Ewing Manor has grown into a full sized venue with a full sized audience. The festival hosts over 10,000 guests and a large number of seasonal staff over the summer months: 125 were listed in their most recently available annual report (Season Report 2012). The festival also has an extensive summer camp program, community outreach, and a touring company. The Illinois Shakespeare Festival's cultural impact has been …

The Theater Of Maria Aurèlia Capmany And The Reverberations Of Civil War (History, Censorship, Silence), Sharon G. Feldman
Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications
Maria Aurèlia Capmany (1918-1991) was one of the most prominent Catalan writers of the twentieth century, occupying a singular place in the intellectual and cultural life of Catalonia during the period of the Franco dictatorship and the democratic transition. Her theater is aesthetically daring in its integration of an ample range of contemporary dramatic modes, from intellectually complex to more popular forms of spectacle. Epic theater, monologue, documentary theater, historical drama, and "literary cabaret" (a genre of her own invention)~ all make repeated appearances throughout her theatrical trajectory. Moreover, on the whole her work stands as a testament to her …

En 1992, Richard Schechner, metteur en scène et théoricien nord-américain, faisait dans les pages de la revue TDR (The Drama Review) une observation qui fut jugée scandaleuse, en déclarant : « [T]heater as we have known and practiced it —the staging of written dramas— will be the string quartet of the 21st century: a beloved but extremely limited genre, a subdivision of performance » (Schechner 1992, 8). Six ans plus tard, en 1998, encore étourdi par la fameuse affirmation (la condamnation plutôt) de Schechner, le théoricien et critique nord-américain W. B. Worthen attirait l’attention sur ce qu’il considérait un …

UNL Faculty Course Portfolios
In the pursuit of teaching the art of acting, and specifically acting for the camera, how do we measure growth? Additionally is there a correlation between high academic achievement and talent? In this portfolio we will examine how to evaluate acting, student growth, and examine test and paper results to see if the most “talented” performers are also the highest academic achievers.

The Naïve Ingénue, The Plucky Everyman's Hero, And The Ingénue Gone Awry: The Satirical Deconstruction Of Theatrical Character Tropes In Urinetown: The Musical, Victoria Montecillo
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis looks to explore Urinetown: The Musical through a critical and theoretical framework, analyzing the show's presentation and deconstruction of theatrical character tropes through musical satire. Using the theories of theatre theorists such as Bertolt Brecht, Peter Brook, and Augusto Boal, this thesis discusses the use of theatre as a device for political and social commentary. Additionally, this thesis focuses more specifically on the show's character of Penelope Pennywise as a new kind of character in the theatre: an "ingénue gone awry," within the context of approaching a performance of the character in a performance of the musical.
