The Effect Of The Trend Toward Religious Schools On Public Schools, Clarence Peters May 1949

The Effect Of The Trend Toward Religious Schools On Public Schools, Clarence Peters

Concordia Theological Monthly

Before investigating the topic before us, it may be well for us to inquire· into the reason why some churches maintain their own schools. The reason is not that they do not appreciate the public school or the advantages which these tax-supported schools have brought to the people of America.

Johann Lorenz Mosheim's Philosophy Of History, Lewis Spitz Jr. May 1949

Johann Lorenz Mosheim's Philosophy Of History, Lewis Spitz Jr.

Concordia Theological Monthly

History as record and interpretation, just as history as past actuality, has been in constant change. Tempora mutantur, et nos mutamur in. illis is the inexorable law of life and of living academic disciplines as well. The history of historiography powerfully demonstrates the truism that each generation writes its own history. As the world view of humanity changes, the new criteria of evaluating the human story necessitates a reworking of the history of the past.

Sermon Study Of Isaiah 28:23-29, Walter R. Roehrs May 1949

Sermon Study Of Isaiah 28:23-29, Walter R. Roehrs

Concordia Theological Monthly

"All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake He not unto them" (Matt. 13:34). He used "earthly stories with heavenly meaning” that have no equal. "Never man spake like this Man” (John 7:46), because “He taught them as One having authority and not as the scribes” (Matt. 7:29). But holy men, moved by the Holy Ghost, also used this teaching device with telling effect. The Old Testament parables are perhaps not so well known. They commend themselves for pulpit use because they present familiar lessons in a different setting. The pastor may want …

The Epistemology Of Kierkegaard And Its Relation To Dogmatic Theology, Clifford L. Brueggemann May 1949

The Epistemology Of Kierkegaard And Its Relation To Dogmatic Theology, Clifford L. Brueggemann

Bachelor of Divinity

It is the presentation and analysis of this epistemological viewpoint to which this paper is dedicated. What does it mean to know the truth, the Christian truth? How is this truth apprehended? What are the implications of this position for Christian dogmatics? The scope of this paper therefore is broad, too broad, really for adequate treatment in a thesis of this size. The paper does, however, try to cover the more obvious phases of this problem, and also to present as much of the background of the problem and of the man as is necessary to gain a reliable insight …

St Paul's Use Of Military Terms In His Epistles, Robert A. Hobus May 1949

St Paul's Use Of Military Terms In His Epistles, Robert A. Hobus

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this thesis is not to show how Paul was influenced by the Gentile world into which he was born. The writer will not try to point out how the, intellectualism of· the Greeks and the materialism of the Romans influenced Paul in his theology. It will be taken as a positive premise in this thesis that Paul's theology was of divine origin, that his words were inspired words, that his teachings were from God instead of being a mixture of the best thoughts or philosophies that either of these civilizations produced. The fact that Paul was born …

Techniques From The Secular Fields Of Counseling And Psychotherapy Pertinen To Pastoral Care, Harold Irwin Haas May 1949

Techniques From The Secular Fields Of Counseling And Psychotherapy Pertinen To Pastoral Care, Harold Irwin Haas

Bachelor of Divinity

It is the purpose of the author to point out the theories and techniques from the secular fields of counseling and psychotherapy which seem to be pertinent to pastoral care. The author feels that psychological counseling has already reached a point where the ministry can no longer afford to ignore it. This paper, then, is an attempt to sustematize some of the better thinking which has been done in the field. It is the author’s hope that he may make some small contribution to the field of practical theology by passing on the results of his own investigation in this …

The Concept Of God In Chrisitian Science, George R. Kraus May 1949

The Concept Of God In Chrisitian Science, George R. Kraus

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose or this paper is, first, to examine Mrs. Eddy's concept in the light of Scripture and to prove that her concept of God is not Scriptural. In this connection it will be necessary to show how Mrs. Eddy uses Scripture passages in a metaphysical and even perverted manner to substantiate her claims. Secondly, we shall compare her concept of God with those or other religious and philosophic systems and demonstrate the falsity of her claim that her concept of of God is unique.

The Urban Church In A Transition Community, Vernon Roy Schreiber May 1949

The Urban Church In A Transition Community, Vernon Roy Schreiber

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of an urban community which is in the process of changing status upon the life of' a church in that community. To proceed in this study it was first necessary to establish the presence of distinguishable communities in an urban setting and to determine the pattern of change which might be present in such communities. However, before the role of the church in such communities could be examined, the writer felt it necessary to present a brief and admittedly incomplete study of urban social forces upon the individual. This procedure …

Radio Biblical Drama, Darrell Duane Helmers May 1949

Radio Biblical Drama, Darrell Duane Helmers

Bachelor of Divinity

By this is meant simply the dramatization of Bible Stories (episodes from the Bible), and the expansion of individual Biblical Texts. This study will not include the strictly moral or ethical stories which are based on Biblical principles, but only those stories which have their foundation in Christ as the Savior from sin and the Author of the New Life.

The Concept Of The Kingdom Of God In Paul's Epistles, E H. Wildgrube Jr May 1949

The Concept Of The Kingdom Of God In Paul's Epistles, E H. Wildgrube Jr

Bachelor of Divinity

Unlike the English concept it includes the idea of reign. Many scholars hold that at the basis of the concept or basileia lies the idea of the Old Testament theocracy, in which God ruled over His people. This particular concept of the theocracy of the Old Testament is brought to the surface in I Samuel 8,7: "And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them."

The New Testament Concept Of The Personal Devil, John David Fritz May 1949

The New Testament Concept Of The Personal Devil, John David Fritz

Bachelor of Divinity

It is the writer’s intention to show on the basis of the New Testament that our Lord Jesus Christ and the apostles and evangelists of the New Testament conceived the devil to be a very personal enemy of Our Lord Himself and of the communion of saints, His Church.

The Doctrine Of The Humanity Of Christ According To The Epistle To The Hebrews, Carl Miller May 1949

The Doctrine Of The Humanity Of Christ According To The Epistle To The Hebrews, Carl Miller

Bachelor of Divinity

To illustrate: if there are five passages that all bring out point "A" of the pre-determined outline of the doctrine, it is not necessary to treat all five passages just to show that point "A" is covered in the epistle. If this procedure seems somewhat arbitrary, we state again that the purpose of this thesis is merely to show how completely the doctrine of Christ's humanity has been revealed in the epistle to the Hebrews.

The Evangelistic Methods Of Dwight L. Moody, Richard F. Wagner May 1949

The Evangelistic Methods Of Dwight L. Moody, Richard F. Wagner

Bachelor of Divinity

There is always a human side to every spiritual movement. It shall be the purpose of this thesis to discover the human side of Dwight L. Moody in relation to the methods which he used in his evangelistic activity. The word "evangelistic" in this thesis title means: that which pertains to winning others “to Christian discipleship”. The word “method” means: the devices, plans, procedures which are used in the dissemination of the Gospel; therefore, this thesis will concern itself with devices, plans, and procedures which were used by Dwight L. Moody to win others to Christian discipleship.

In Christ Jesus An Approach To The Ε̂ŴΜα Τoȗ Χειδτοȗ Concept Through The Pauline Use Of The E’V Xeidtω̑ Formula, Walter Bartling May 1949

In Christ Jesus An Approach To The Ε̂ŴΜα Τoȗ Χειδτοȗ Concept Through The Pauline Use Of The E’V Xeidtω̑ Formula, Walter Bartling

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

All modern studies of' the ’ΕνΧειδτοȗ formula have as their starting point the fascinating dissertation of Adolf Deissmann, which appeared in 1892. It is hardly possible to overestimate the influence this book has had upon research in Pauline theology, not only upon study of the problem to which it is immediately directed, but especially also upon inquiries into the nature of Pauline "mysticism". Its influence on interpreters of the δ̂wμαΧειδτοȗ concept will become apparent as we proceed somewhat atlength to present Deissmann’s argument. All modern studies of' the ’Εν Χειδτοȗ formula have as their starting point the fascinating dissertation of …
