A Study In The Theology Of Christian Social Action, Charles Freeman Sleeper Jan 1954

A Study In The Theology Of Christian Social Action, Charles Freeman Sleeper

Senior Scholar Papers

In this paper I have attempted to present a summary of my exposition of the theology of Rauschenbusch and Niebuhr, and of my own understanding of the issues of Christian Social Action. I have tried to reproduce in this short space the thought of these men, in a manner which should make it comprehensible and which should relate it to the larger questions of social action. This year’s work as a Senior Scholar has proved invaluable because of the discipline of self-directed study which the work taught, and because of myriad possibilities of future investigation which it has suggested. I …

Barton Warren Stone: Early American Advocate Of Christian Unity, William Garrett West Jan 1954

Barton Warren Stone: Early American Advocate Of Christian Unity, William Garrett West

ACU Brown Library Monograph Series

Based on the Reed Lectures from 1967, Smith traces the anti-clerical message that accompanied the frontier religious preaching of Alexander Campbell and Barton Stone. Their hopes were that congregations could appoint their own leaders without the undue influence of outsiders. These evangelists were to be first and foremost servants, with no distinction between lay members and ministers. Smith, then traces the development of a professional ministry system within Disciples of Christ into the 1960s as churches called for greater levels of training among their preachers. Chapters include: ▪ A Nineteenth Century Revolution: A Free Ministry in a Free Society ▪ …

George Fox's Concept Of The Church, Arthur O. Roberts Jan 1954

George Fox's Concept Of The Church, Arthur O. Roberts

Arthur O. Roberts Collection

Arthur Roberts' dissertation (Boston University, 1954)

Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to determine the significance of George Fox's concept of the Church for his doctrinal teachings and for his work as a religious leader in seventeenth century England. Literature in the field o early Quakerism, extensive and varied though it is, has neglected formulation of Fox's views on the basis of such a dominant ideal. The present study is based primarily upon the printed, collection of Fox's works. During the Interregnum, England struggled for authority and for unity. Fox was part of the radical wing of the Puritan …

The Covenant Of Blood, Paul M. Bretscher Jan 1954

The Covenant Of Blood, Paul M. Bretscher

Concordia Theological Monthly

To many the Bible appears to contain two different religions. One is the religion of Judaism in the Old Testament; the other, the religion of Christianity in the New. The differences appear to be so great that the two "religions" seem worlds apart. The Old Testament is a religion of Law; the New Testament, of the Gospel. The Old Testament religion is characterized by a complex scheme of sacrifices, by circumcision, by detailed Sabbath regulations; in the New Testament all this is rejected. The Old Testament religion is the religion of a nation; the New Testament religion is to be …
