Has Our Church A Quarrel With Science?, P E. Kretzmann

He who makes clear distinctions teaches well. So says the old Latin proverb. Or: He whose definitions are clear at the outset, will most likely succeed in presenting his subject in a convincing manner. Let us therefore begin with some definitions, in keeping with the wording of our topic.

Introduction To Sacred Theology, J T. Mueller Nov 1931

Introduction To Sacred Theology, J T. Mueller

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Nature and Constitution of Sacred Theology.

Primary and Secondary Fundamental Doctrines.

The fundamental doctrines of the Christian religion may be divided into primary and secondary fundamental doctrines. Also this distinction is Scriptural, practical, and useful, for it helps the Christian theologian to discriminate rightly between the fundamental doctrines themselves. As we have learned, fundamental doctrines are such as constitute the foundation of the Christian faith; yet not all fundamental doctrines constitute this foundation in the same manner. Hollas rightly observes (53): "All the fundamental articles of faith must necessarily be known, but the grades of this necessity are different." …

High-Pressure Church-Work, P E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

High-Pressure Church-Work.

There is a very significant article in the New Republic of June 10, 1931, the gist of which is reproduced in the August, 1931, number of the Readers Digest. Its general line of thought is that of a similar article on porch-climbers in the Forum of April, 1931. Both articles speak at some length and with considerable frankness of high-powered salesmanship and of modern selling methods in general. And their conclusions are not at all favorable to this form of selling, with all the machinery that has been assembled to serve the end of this high-pressure salesmanship, which …

De Servo Arbitrio, Th Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

A review of this book in the Concordia Theological Monthly does not call for a discussion of its contents. De Servo Arbitrio has been sufficiently reviewed along those lines for the past four hundred years. Since its publication in 1525 it has stood in the forefront of theological discussion. Luther himself reviewed it in 1537 and wrote to Wolfgang Fabricius Capito: "I am much averse to having a collection of my books published and do not care to lend a hand to it; rather would I, impelled by a Saturnian craving, have them all destroyed. For I do not recognize …

Dr. Francis Pieper The Churchman, W H. Dau Oct 1931

Dr. Francis Pieper The Churchman, W H. Dau

Concordia Theological Monthly

''There is no such thing in the Christian Church as mere teaching; all teaching is to be reduced to practice. The Christian Church is not a philosophers' school, where only teaching is done, but a society of people who by faith in the Gospel and mortification of the flesh are traveling on the way to everlasting life and are commissioned to lead others into this way. True, there is also teaching done in the Christian Church, and this is done first and over continued. Doctrine is the basis for every activity of the Church. However, teaching is not the end, …

The Inspiration Of The New Testament, P E. Kretzmann Oct 1931

The Inspiration Of The New Testament, P E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

Our fourth reason for accepting the inspiration of the New Testament on a level with the Old Testament is found in the internal evidence offered by references to earlier writings in the later books of the first century, that is, those contained in the convolute of the New Testament as we now have it, as well as those which indicate that letters or treatises were to be kept, thus acquiring canonical standing in the Church. To begin with the latter point first, we have such passages as Luke 1, 1-4, in which the writer expressly makes the claim that his …

Paul As Citizen, W Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

Does the subject need on apology Paul stands before us as the evangelizer of the Greco-Roman world, the greatest missionary that ever lived, as the preacher of righteousness by faith, as the great champion of the doctrine of grace, as the inspired penman of a great part of our New Testament, and to treat of him in the role of citizen might seem a descent from the sublime to the commonplace. But there are passages in the Bible in which he is depicted in this role. You cannot ignore them; they are there for a purpose and certainly must receive …

The Inspiration Of The New Testament, P E. Kretzmann Sep 1931

The Inspiration Of The New Testament, P E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

Inspiration is that miraculous, supernatural process by and through which God, specifically the Holy Spirit, at specified times and for specific purposes, caused certain men, the prophets of the Old Testament and the apostles (and evangelists) of the New Testament, to write down in words of human speech both such historical incidents as they were already familiar with and such other accounts of persons and events, together with immediate revelations concerning future events and the mysteries of salvation, as are a matter of His divine omniscience and wisdom alone, so that every possibility of error, not only in every main …
