Present-Day Problems Of Lutheranism, F. Kreiss Jan 1936

Present-Day Problems Of Lutheranism, F. Kreiss

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Lutheran World Convention devoted the greater part of its sessions to the reading and discussion of reports on important problems confronting the Lutheran Church to-day. Unfortunately, for lack of time, the open discussion was frequently reduced to a minimum, so that it was difficult to ascertain what the majority of the delegates thought about the subjects in question.

God’S Marvelous Grace To Me, John Franklin Woods Jan 1936

God’S Marvelous Grace To Me, John Franklin Woods

Woods, John Franklin, 1865-

According to the Preface, the idea for this volume came about in 1935, when Woods shared his “life history” at a meeting in Dover, Delaware. In his Introduction, W. L. Surbrook declared it a success, writing that “Rev. Woods’ clear enunciations, positive interpretations and pointed declarations of rugged Gospel Truth make this volume a valuable asset to anyone’s library.”

The book contains 7 sermons and 5 chapters of autobiography/memoir. Information about the sermons is provided in the User Guides.

Testifying The Gospel Of The Grace Of God, T. Engelder Jan 1936

Testifying The Gospel Of The Grace Of God, T. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

Whenever St. Paul had occasion to speak of his work in the Christian ministry, his thoughts dwelt on one subject: "The Gospel of the grace of God." At a conference at Miletus he characterized his ministry thus : "None of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy and the ministry which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the Gospel of the grace of God," Acts 20, 24. On the present occasion we cannot, and we would not, speak on any other subject. Let …

Sermon Study On 2 Cor. 4, 3-6;, Theo. Laetsch

Concordia Theological Monthly

We shall not be able to understand this beautiful passage without a knowledge of the preceding context. The apostle had begun to defend the divinity and the glory of his office and the blamelessness of his personal character against the scurrilous attacks mode against both by his opponents in Corinth.

The Theology And Psychology Of The Negroes' Religion Prior To 1860 As Shown Particularly In The Spirituals: A Thesis, Norman Gregg Long

Honors Papers

In this thesis the writer has endeavored to treat the distinctive religion of the American Negroes so as to make evident, as far as he is able, the circumstances of its origin, its early development, the changes which have conditioned it, the theology in which it has been formulated, and the psychological motives which have been expressed in it. This study is made with the following specific objectives in view:

1. To study the Negro Spirituals as a body of musical literature in which the Negroes' religion prior to 1861 is embodied.

2. To point out the most outstanding features …

William Taylor : Organizer And Statesman, Thomas Mee Jan 1936

William Taylor : Organizer And Statesman, Thomas Mee

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

To the average layman of the present day, as well as the majority of the new generation of ministers, the name of William Taylor rarely carries the deep impression that his labors justify. From the standpoint of the American Continents, this observation may have more in fact than in other parts of the world where his labors were more abundant in term of years devoted to the building of a more worthy civilization.

With a view to making more accessible the thrilling account of this truly noble Christian Statesman, much research has been made. In doing so, it is hoped …

The Christian Thought Of Doctor Toyohiko Kagawa And His Social Works And Movements, Eiichi Iimura Jan 1936

The Christian Thought Of Doctor Toyohiko Kagawa And His Social Works And Movements, Eiichi Iimura

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The world recognizes Toyohiko Kagawa as the St. Francis of Japan. His heart is one of pure love like that of St. Francis, but his battle has not been carried on by means of the sermon in a religious denomination. With a heart of love Kagawa has stood in the streets and would save the lives of the people. This is because he was born in 20th century Japan and not in Italy of the Middle Ages.

Fifteen hundred years after the fall of ancient Rome the world once more is about to undergo a mighty change. At this time …

Medieval Religious Pageantry And Its Modern Revival, P. E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

As every student of the modern drama has learned from the careful research work of Chambers, Creizenach, and particularly of Prof. Karl Young, this form of art had its origin in the liturgy of the medieval Church. During the period from the tenth to the fourteenth century, when many of the gorgeous cathedrals of France, Germany, and England-Notre Dame, and Amiens, and Reims, and Strassburg, and Cologne, and Lincoln, and York, and Westminster were erected, the minds of the people of these and other countries were intensely religious.
