"Our office is a different thing now than what it was under the Pope; it has now become earnest and salutary. Hence it involves much more trouble and labor, danger and trial, and secures but little reward and gratitude in the world; but Christ Himself will be our reward if we labor faithfully." So Luther wrote in the preface to his Small Catechism four hundred years ago. Does the pastor of today think in such terms of his pastoral office?

''Three hackneyed terms," some one may say. "Why waste valuable time on them when there are greater subjects to discuss?" But are there? Is it not true that, If we really knew what these terms signify, if we knew not only their dictionary definition, but were thoroughly intimate with them by much contemplation, consideration, and cultivation, ''tasting, touching, and handling them," gratefully and reverently, there would be a great change in our attitude and mode of life, a rejuvenation of our spiritual energies, the suppression of the spirit of pessimism and lethargy, and the beginning of a new era of …

A History Of First Friends Church, Nellie S. Waterbury
Historical Quaker Books
Only a brief word of introduction need be written. First Friends Church of Cleveland has a history of genuine interest to many. The data which these pages contain could have been gathered, put into intelligible form, and made most valuable to the reader only by one intimately acquainted with the personalities and events of the years. Such a person has been found in the writer, Mrs. Nellie S. Waterbury. Her long membership and active interest in this meeting provide a background. of understanding of the events which the book sets forth. She is well fitted for her task by native …

The Progressive Self-Culture Of A Lutheran Pastor, John Weidenschilling
Bachelor of Divinity
During his three years at the seminary the theological student is taught the qualifications and requirements of a Lutheran pastor, and he is informed of the tremendous responsibilities and the exacting demands which a call into the ministry will lay upon him when he has become a pastor of a congregation. But the seminary training is not able to convert the student into a full-fledged pastor. Only long years of hard study and practical experience and divine grace can equip a man successfully and completely for this greatest and hardest calling and work in this world. Unless the ministerial candidate, …

The Christian Minister Protagonist Of Social Justice, Ellsworth N. Escott
Honors Papers
The thesis to be elaborated in this paper is that the Christian minister has a responsibility of profound import in the great common enterprise of achieving social justice. By social justice we mean the greatest possible realization by the individual and by society of abundance of life by way of the most complete practical coordination of individual attitudes, social relationships, economic arrangements and ethical motives. In the development of this thesis we shall be under necessity of employing a number of technical terms, such as democracy, dictatorship, capitalism, profit economy, acquisitive society, economic imperialism, which are in current use. We …
