The Doctrine Of Offense, Arthur Weber
The Doctrine Of Offense, Arthur Weber
Bachelor of Divinity
The fundamental thought of this thesis revolves around the word skandalon. For that reason it will be necessary to begin with a study of its etymology in the effort to bring out the full connotation of the word as it is used in the Bible. It is apparent from the following etymological study that the word skandalon means "a stumbling block or trap which causes one to fall.”
Qualifications Of A Chrisitan Minister And Teacher And Teaching Procedures As Exemplified In The Life And Teaching Of Jesus, Leonard Thaemert
Qualifications Of A Chrisitan Minister And Teacher And Teaching Procedures As Exemplified In The Life And Teaching Of Jesus, Leonard Thaemert
Bachelor of Divinity
What were the qualifications of Jesus for this important work? We have only a few glances into His rich but brief life here on earth; but all of these are significant, and indicate that He was steadily pursuing a definite purpose and fitting Himself for a specific service. If we consider what He did after the age of thirty, we are led to the conclusion that all His earlier years were spent in study, in meditation in prayer, in direct communion with the Father as preparatory for His three years of service. How significant this is to see in Him …
The Day Of Atonement And Its Evaluation In The Epistle To The Hebrews, Theodore Stolp
The Day Of Atonement And Its Evaluation In The Epistle To The Hebrews, Theodore Stolp
Bachelor of Divinity
Thus the Day of Atonement stands before us in the Scripture as a monument of that wisdom of God which always finds means exactly fitted to supply the needs of men under the conditions and times in which they live, and still more as a monument to that loving kindness of the Lord which is ever stooping to the sinners to rescue their souls from death and to “restore unto them the joy of His salvation.”

The Prophets And Political And Social Problems, Th. Laetsch
The Prophets And Political And Social Problems, Th. Laetsch
Concordia Theological Monthly
The well-known saying, The exiles returned from Babylon to found not a kingdom but a Church, expresses at best only a half-truth, for the commonwealth of Israel was from its very origin a Church, a state-church, a church-state, a theocracy, and this theocracy was not founded by the returning exiles, but was a divine institution, organized by the Lord immediately after the deliverance of Israel out of Egypt. It is rather difficult for us to realize all that the term ''theocracy" implies. The Jewish Church was not a Church within the Jewish state, it was the Jewish state; and the …
Reason Or Revelation?, Th. Engelder
Reason Or Revelation?, Th. Engelder
Concordia Theological Monthly
What? Some more rattling of dry bones? As though we had to be told what an abominable and dangerous thing rationalism is! Just read on. The thing is not so dead as you may think. We are dealing with a live issue. There are many more rationalists in the churches than the census lists. Your own theological thinking may have more of a rationalistic bias than you are aware of. And in our spiritual struggles we are inclined to heed the insidious logic of reason more than the sure Word of Scripture, the certain promise of the Gospel. So the …

The Herods In The Opinion Of Comtemparay Writers, Clarence Bopp
The Herods In The Opinion Of Comtemparay Writers, Clarence Bopp
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
Because the Herods were in power in Palestine at the time of Christ and His apostles, there are many references to them in the New Testament historical books. Most of these references record events which emphasize the character of a particular Herod. For this reason a study of the character of the various Herods is of as much importance to an understanding of the New Testament as is the study of events during their reigns. In this paper we have accordingly attempted not only to study the chief events which occurred under each Herod, but also to analyze the character …
A Criticism Of The Madras Conference From The Standpoint Of A Christian Believer, Wilbert Griesse
A Criticism Of The Madras Conference From The Standpoint Of A Christian Believer, Wilbert Griesse
Bachelor of Divinity
What a wonderful thing it would be if all the denominations could get together on a common ground and work together against ·the forces of sin and hell: What an impression that would make upon the world! Such a condition would greatly further the cause of missions. It was especially the younger churches that were crying for unity. The younger churches cannot understand the divisions and the multiplied organizations of the mother churches. If they are all Christian, why are they not united?
Tradition And Reason In The Roman Sacraments, Wilfred Janke
Tradition And Reason In The Roman Sacraments, Wilfred Janke
Bachelor of Divinity
The supernatural truth was revealed to man through the Word of God. To this the Roman Catholic Church adds the unwritten tradition committed to the Church. Both Protestants and Catholics agree that it is not enough that God should give His revelation to man, but that gift must be kept pure and unalloyed and entire, otherwise it would be valueless. God, therefore, must both provide the sacred source of truth and keep it clean and uncontaminated. So far the two bodies are agreed.
The Doctrine Of Justification By Faith The Leimotif Of The Apology Of The Augsburg Confession, Lorman Petersen
The Doctrine Of Justification By Faith The Leimotif Of The Apology Of The Augsburg Confession, Lorman Petersen
Bachelor of Divinity
The purpose of this thesis is not to present Catholic doctrine and refute it, but, self-evidently, to show that the Doctrine of Justification by Faith is the Leitmotif of the Apology. We make no claim that we have accomplished our purpose, or that we have done justice to this great Christ centered Confession of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. We have only scratched the surface of this document so rich in Christian doctrine. Melanchthon was a master-mind, and it takes a master-mind to follow him.
The Catechumenate Of The Church, G F. Busch
The Catechumenate Of The Church, G F. Busch
Bachelor of Divinity
In a Christian home the mother usually is the first teacher. And after Baptism the child is a child of God, and must then be brought up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, and this by means of living and instruction. It. is true, the child does not understand much at first, sometimes not even his own prayers, but it will soon learn to understand, and sometimes if mother forgets about the evening prayer, the child will remind her of it. And if we search the Scriptures, as Jesus commands us to do according to John 5,3, we …
Liberialism In Contrast To The Biblical Faith, William Grunow
Liberialism In Contrast To The Biblical Faith, William Grunow
Bachelor of Divinity
This paper is a study of the doctrines of Liberalism. By being thoroughly familiar with these doctrines, the student will not be misled by the sheep’s clothing of orthodox phraseology which Liberalists often employ.
The Internal Relationship, Linguistic And Theological, Between The Gospel Of John And The Epistles Of John, Marvin Kammrath
The Internal Relationship, Linguistic And Theological, Between The Gospel Of John And The Epistles Of John, Marvin Kammrath
Bachelor of Divinity
The intrinsic value of a paper such as the one here presented, lies not so much in the impression made by the finished product as in the profitable textual study which it entails. The task of digging deep into the language and theology of four books of the New Testament has been a pleasant one. In addition to the joy of working with the original Greek of the sacred New Testament, of making careful literal translations and thorough exegetical studies, there has been the added satisfaction of unfolding cumulative doctrinal evidence overwhelming in its depth and extent.
The Fulfillment Of Old Testament Prophecy In The Gospel Of St Matthew Exegetically And Doctrinally Treated, Herbert Goerss
The Fulfillment Of Old Testament Prophecy In The Gospel Of St Matthew Exegetically And Doctrinally Treated, Herbert Goerss
Bachelor of Divinity
Matthew has some 27 prophecy quotations in his Gospel. We list them here as they occur from time to time in the Gospel, giving the location of the fulfillment, the subject prophesied, and the location of the prophecy. Of course, in some cases, various prophecies have the same fulfillment.
The Knowledge And Use Of The Bible In The Medieval Age, Martin Bertermann
The Knowledge And Use Of The Bible In The Medieval Age, Martin Bertermann
Bachelor of Divinity
In attempting to show precisely to what extent the new learning pervaded the countries of Europe during the Middle Ages, and, specifically, just in how far the Bible was known among the clergy and laity, one must be careful to strive for the golden mean in interpreting a flood of literature which usually goes to one of two extremes. The first of these divergent opinions is the one mentioned above, that the Bible, as almost wholly unknown by the clergy and laity of the Middle Ages. And this would seem to be substantiated by no less an authority than Luther …
The Use Of Hades In The New Testament, Louis Meyer
The Use Of Hades In The New Testament, Louis Meyer
Bachelor of Divinity
The word hades (sheol) presents a problem--a matter on which the theologians or our own Synod are not agreed. Many of them believe that the word has various meanings--that in certain passages it means hell, while in other passages it has a general meaning, namely, "the state of death”. There are also those who are of the conviction that the term is never used to designate hell, the place of eternal punishment, but only means "the state or condition of death".
It is the latter view which, after careful study of the problem, I consider to be the more correct …
Demoniac Possession, Harold Maleske
Demoniac Possession, Harold Maleske
Bachelor of Divinity
Among the many miracles which the synoptic Gospels record, special prominence is given to the casting out of demons or devils who possessed those unfortunate people commonly known as demoniacs. In order to clarify the Biblical concept of demoniac possession, the following facts concerning the Scriptural doctrine of the devil and his hosts must be considered.
The Prophecies Of Balam, Theodore Martin
The Prophecies Of Balam, Theodore Martin
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
Balaam is known largely because of his connection with the story of the ass that spoke, and, while critics point the skeptical finger and rant against the incredible nature of the narrative, they make the usual mistake of drawing attention away from the important part, the prophecies, and centering it on one incident, which is perhaps more striking, although merely incidental.

Miscellanea, W. Arndt
The Prophets And Political And Social Problems, Theodore Laetsch
The Prophets And Political And Social Problems, Theodore Laetsch
Concordia Theological Monthly
Any one that even casually reads the prophetic books of the Old Testament will see at once that the prophets took a very active interest in the social problems of their day and pointed out a way to their solution. The question is whether what they say on these problems still applies to conditions in the twentieth century, 2,500 and more years later than these prophets lived. A categorical denial of the applicability of Old Testament prophecy to our present-day conditions would come into conflict with such clear Scripture-passages as Rom.15: 4 and 2 Tim. 3: 16. On the other …
