Leading Thoughts On Eschatology In The Epistles To The Thessalonians, L. Fuerbringer
Leading Thoughts On Eschatology In The Epistles To The Thessalonians, L. Fuerbringer
Concordia Theological Monthly
In our discussion of the leading eschatological thoughts of the Epistles to the Thessalonians we first of all called attention to the teaching of St. Paul that the Lord will return, and will return suddenly, as a thief in the night, 1 Thess. 5:1-3; in the second installment we pointed out that He will return only after the great Antichrist will have been revealed, 2 Thess. 2:1-12. The discussion of this second division has not been completed. After warning his readers not to let themselves be misled into believing that the Day of the Lord had already arrived and after …

But what may it mean that I have knowledge together with myself? Let us illustrate. If I know a secret together with my neighbor, then this means not only that we both know the secret, but also that each knows that the other knows it. If, then, I say that I know something together with myself, this means not only that I know something, but that I am cognizant of the fact that I know it.

But one name has caused difficulties. It has a hidden meaning which a mere translation does not reveal. We refer to the name by which Jesus spoke of Himself and which others either dared not or would not repeat after Him. Others called Him Rabbi, Lord, and Master. He called Himself THE SON OF MAN. But what is the meaning or this name? Why did Christ so consistently use it? Milligan tells us that “probably no other single phrase of the Gospels has called forth a greater variety of interpretations; nor can we be said even yet to have reached …
Paul's Missionary Methods, Arthur Gerhardt
Paul's Missionary Methods, Arthur Gerhardt
Bachelor of Divinity
No attempt has been made to fathom the depths of the manifold problems concerning the facts of Paul’s biography. Questions of chronology and literary criticism ate avoided to give place to the purpose of our thesis. That Paul was called directly by God, that he was an inspired apostle, must not be overlooked. In this study, however, the historical facts pertaining to his mission endeavors will chiefly be stressed. The treatment is not intended to be more than suggestive.
The Doctrine Of Regeneration As Seen Especially In Romans 6:1-14, Eugene Klug
The Doctrine Of Regeneration As Seen Especially In Romans 6:1-14, Eugene Klug
Bachelor of Divinity
Regeneration in the Epistle to the Romans: that is the problem before us for our consideration. Does Paul speak of regeneration at all in this epistle? There are those who hold that he does not, while others maintain that he does. Still others, unable to decide one way or the other, attempt to adopt a middle course, thereby becoming hopelessly enmeshed in doctrinal and exegetical confusion. The problem resolves itself still further into a dispute over one passage, ch. 6, 1-14, which is only section of Paul’s well planned letter which could – and which does, if I may anticipate …

Gnostic Elements In Chrisitian Science, Paul Strickert
Bachelor of Divinity
The purpose of this thesis is not polemical. Nor is it the purpose to show that Christian Science is baaed directly and primarily on Gnosticism. It is to be a parallelism only; -- yet not of "accidental" doctrines taught in both, but of main tenets which are well substantiated.
The Training And Education Of Saul Of Tarsus, Arlo Krueger
The Training And Education Of Saul Of Tarsus, Arlo Krueger
Bachelor of Divinity
In undertaking a study of this nature there are two possible avenues of approach. The one is the rationalistic approach, and the other we might call, for want of a better name, the reverent approach. Both of these methods of approach have their advocates and adherents among students of St. Paul's life. And it is right at this point where the majority of divergences have their origin. The one approaches the subject from a rationalistic, the other from a reverent standpoint; and consequently both arrive at widely divergent conclusions. Therefore it is of primary significance that, before entering upon our …
Church Union, L W. Heidemann
Church Union, L W. Heidemann
Bachelor of Divinity
It is the purpose of our paper to show from History and from scripture that we have no reason to become disheartened in our position of strict confessionalism and determined separation from such unions which are based on compromise instead of complete doctrinal unity. History shows that this position serves the best interests of Christ and His Church. The Bible demands that this be our position.
The Theology Of The Pharisees, Victor Bartelt
The Theology Of The Pharisees, Victor Bartelt
Bachelor of Divinity
The purpose, therefore, of this paper is to give the reader a general overview concerning the doctrines of the Pharisees, to present as well as is possible in a short treatise as this, the outstanding characteristics of their theology, and especially to discuss those teachings which are prominent in the New Testament and which brought them into such bitter conflicts with our Savior.

Leading Thoughts On Eschatology In The Epistles To The Thessalonians, L. Fuerbringer
Concordia Theological Monthly
In his First Epistle St. Paul had directed the Thessalonians not to concern themselves about the exact time and hour of the return of Christ. Chap. 5: 1, 2. But that was just the thing in which many within the congregation were particularly interested. Already from the First Epistle we see that the return of Christ had become so live a question within the congregation that many had become disturbed over it; some had gone so far as to neglect their daily work, idly depending on others to support them, and in their fanatical zeal many regarded spiritual matters as …

When the corrupt clergy would do nothing to better the corrupt Church, Luther appealed "To the Christian Nobility of the German Nation on the Betterment of the Christian Estate,"' and many hailed him as the desired champion of the nation and shouted Hosannah! Hallelujah! When, however, in the same 1520 he wrote "The Babylonian Captivity of the Church," he published an earthquake and committed the unpardonable sin against the priests, and many cried "Crucify! This is an hard saying; who can hear it?" We are reminded of the account John 6:60, 66: "From that time many of his disciples went …

The moderns have a third grievance against the Bible as God gave it to us. They are scandalized at the many "trivialities" incorporated in it. Those portions of the Bible, they say, which treat of purely secular matters, common household affairs, petty concerns of men, and the like, do not belong to the Word of God. God's Word is too high and holy a thing to have these levicula mixed up with it. It is inconceivable that, when the Holy Ghost inspired the saving Word, He should have bothered about the marital affairs of Isaac and Rebecca. The moderns are …

The Doctrine Of The Church And Ministry According To Dr. Walther, In Relation To The Romanizing Tendencies Within The Lutheran Church, Waldemar Streufert
The Doctrine Of The Church And Ministry According To Dr. Walther, In Relation To The Romanizing Tendencies Within The Lutheran Church, Waldemar Streufert
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
When one studies the writings of Dr. Walther in the field of the doctrine of the Church and the Ministry, one cannot fail to notice his peculiar approach to this locus of theology. In employing the word 'peculiar; we do so advisedly. In a certain sense, he expresses the same doctrine proclaimed by the martyrs of apostolic days. In this respect, Walther is ecumenical, not peculiarly original. On the other hand, placing his theories beside the theories of his contemporaries, we must admit that Walther is an exception to the rule.
