Henotheistic Abberatons In Ancient Israel, Robert Wiltenburg
Henotheistic Abberatons In Ancient Israel, Robert Wiltenburg
Bachelor of Divinity
In our present discussion we shall use the term “henotheism" in its generally accepted sense as referring to a belief in the supremacy of one god in a particular locality, while the existence of other gods in other places is taken for granted. It is, or course, not true that Jehovism as a religious system recognized such tenets. Scripture affords ample evidence to the effect that the great, inspired religious teachers of the Hebrews, such as Moses, Samuel, David, the prophets, and others, had a clear knowledge of the sole position of Jehovah as God of the universe. That this …
The Concept Of Love In The Johannine Writings, Omar Stuenkel
The Concept Of Love In The Johannine Writings, Omar Stuenkel
Bachelor of Divinity
In the present study I have given emphasis to the Johannine writings because John provides all points necessary for consideration. It is my hope that I can in the future expand and extend the consideration of the love-concept in the New Testament to include especially the magnificent Pauline passages and the Synoptic implications. I reserve the liberty however, in this paper, to adduce passages from any part of the New Testament where these will add a unique thought to the understanding of the Johannine concept of love.
The History Of Scholasticism And Its Influence On The Church And Education Of The Middle Ages, Walter Huber
The History Of Scholasticism And Its Influence On The Church And Education Of The Middle Ages, Walter Huber
Bachelor of Divinity
This is to be a Bachelor of Divinity Thesis in the field of Church History. Immediately, however, it becomes evident that in the coverage of the above subject we cannot restrict ourselves within the bounds of Church History. It is impossible altogether to divorce Church History from general history. When one is taken and isolated from the other, both automatically suffer an infinite loss. Apart from the history of the world we cannot understand the history of the Church; and with the Church throughout all Christian ages playing so great, influential, and important role in the general history of mankind, …

Missouri Synod And Buffalo Synod To 1866, Roy Suelflow
Missouri Synod And Buffalo Synod To 1866, Roy Suelflow
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
It will be, therefore, one of the main objects of this paper to study and record the different contacts which the Missouri Synod made with the Buffalo Synod, to enable others after us to read the facts step by step, and to form their own opinion of the matter if they wish to do so. Then it is also an object of this dissertation to investigate how the interaction between these two synods resulted in the growth of the Missouri Synod, but in the decline of Buffalo, what caused the Buffalo Synod to lag behind the Missouri Synod in growth …

Pauline Teaching Of The Future, Bernard Wittrock
Pauline Teaching Of The Future, Bernard Wittrock
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This treatise on Paul's view of the future life is an exegetical study. The importance of such an exegetical study cannot be minimized; in a way it must take precedence over against the dogmatical approach. It has been aptly stated, "For all true dogmatics rests wholly on true exegesis; it is wholly dependent, never independent.”

An Investigation Of The Syntax Of Words Denoting Time In The New Testament, Ronald David Drayson
An Investigation Of The Syntax Of Words Denoting Time In The New Testament, Ronald David Drayson
Master's Theses
Statement of the problem
In the English language, a word denoting time calls for the assistance of other words in order to describe the particular aspect of the time to which reference is made. For instance, the word "night" by itself describes little, but "by night" or "night-time" suggests the specific kind of time in contrast to "day time". "In the night" refers to a point of time at which something happened that did not involve the whole night, whereas "during the night" or "throughout the night" would suggest an extension of a condition or experience during the whole of …

Election Of Grace A Comforting Doctrine, Ottmar Cloeter
Election Of Grace A Comforting Doctrine, Ottmar Cloeter
Bachelor of Divinity
Martin Luther, in what many consider his “magum opus”, his '"De Servo Arbitrio", has drawn a fine line of distinction between two aspects of God., which he calls the "Deus absconditus" (hidden God) and the "Deus revelatus” (revculed God); "the majestic, glorious God in whom we live and move and have our being, and God manifest in Christ; God 's · unsearchable judgements and ways past finding out, and His merciful promises in the Gospel.
Laurentius Valla And The Donation Of Constantine, Markus Koch
Laurentius Valla And The Donation Of Constantine, Markus Koch
Bachelor of Divinity
Generally, historians refer to Laurentius Valla, or Lorenzo Valla, or just plain Laurentius with a line or two and then dismiss his real significance. Quite evidently there is more to the man Valla, than a mere sentence of praise or condemnation. He must have done something to earn for himself the title as the greatest critic of his age, as a forerunner of the Lutheran 'heresy’, as the first scientific critical historian. He was not just an ordinary person, if be received the praise of a Luther and an Erasmus. This readily becomes apparent, even inspite of the limited character …
Mariolatry In The Roman Catholic Church Since 1854, Lawrence Reilly
Mariolatry In The Roman Catholic Church Since 1854, Lawrence Reilly
Bachelor of Divinity
The aim of the paper is very ably expressed by Dr. David S.Schaff, of Union Theological Seminary: “To the popular imagination in countries under Papal control Mary occupies virtually the same place of a goddess and the practical result would seem inevitably to be that through the gracious leniency associated with woman and motherhood, sinful habits will be condoned which Christ’s teachings forbid. The wonder is that appeals to another should be commended in view of Christ’s invitation, ‘Come to Me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.'' We feel very definitely that …
The Christian Life According To The Three Epistles Of John, Lester Behnken
The Christian Life According To The Three Epistles Of John, Lester Behnken
Bachelor of Divinity
Before beginning the thesis paper, in which only exegetical and doctrinal matters will be set forth and authenticated on the basis of the text of the three inspired epistles and such other texts as necessarily are drawn into the picture, it is entirely fitting, yes necessary, that certain historical matters be investigated and the isagagical material on the three epistles of John be studied and briefly set forth.
John Tauler His Life, Work And Influence On Luther, Walter Boss
John Tauler His Life, Work And Influence On Luther, Walter Boss
Bachelor of Divinity
Throughout the centuries the name of John Tauler has never passed into oblivion. He has been recognized as an outstanding preacher by the Protestant as well as the Catholic Church. J. H. Kurtz, the Protestant church historian, has called him "one of the most powerful("gerwaltigsten") preachers of all time." The Catholic scholar, Klemens Loeffler, considers Tauler as "one of the greatest mystics and preachers of the Middle Ages."

The Influence Of The Black Death Upon The Life And Works Of John Wycliffe, William Henline
The Influence Of The Black Death Upon The Life And Works Of John Wycliffe, William Henline
Bachelor of Divinity
The purpose of this paper then is to ascertain to what extent John Wycliffe was influenced by one of the greatest calamities which has ever come upon the world.
To the average person the Black Death recalls vaguely a horrible phase in medieval Europe which merely came, but also merely went. This great blight was not a passing thing. It left lasting, livid scars on succeeding generations. It was a type of revolution from which no class escaped; no institution remained unaffected. In fact, many of the medieval institutions were all but destroyed by the Black Death. It also accentuated …

A Review Of Moehlman's "School And Church: The American Way.", O. C. Rupprecht
Concordia Theological Monthly
Which is ''the American way" for the religious training of American children? According to Dr. C.H. Moehlman, Professor of the History of Christianity at the Colgate-Rochester Divinity School, the American way is a different one from that pursued in Christian parochial schools. It is different, too, from the plan of "various religious groups" who "are conducting a vigorous propaganda for the return of the formal teaching of religion to the public classroom" (p. ix). The American way is to let public schools (in preference to parochial schools) and churches exist side by side, and to encourage them in at least …

The characteristic elements of the thought world during the put 75 years may be reduced to two outstanding and significant movements: science and democracy. Man placed an almost absolute faith in the omnicompetence of science. Science became a cult. The empirical method of science was considered the only means by which truth could be discovered and judged. The "scientific" method attempted to displace revelation; it branded the Scriptural theology as metaphysics and relegated it to the museums; it tended to eliminate the idea of God from human thought and to make man self-sufficient; its astronomical and biological theories questioned the …
