The Influence Of Plainsong On The Chorales Of Luther And Those Of His Day, Fred L. Precht May 1945

The Influence Of Plainsong On The Chorales Of Luther And Those Of His Day, Fred L. Precht

Bachelor of Divinity

What then is plainsong, or so-called Gregorian chant? Volumes could be written characterizing this magnificent structure of medieval church song, a song which in a certain sense forms the basis of all modern music. In a treatise of this type let it suffice to state but a few of its fundamental principles. Needless to say, it is of the utmost importance that one have at least a general conception of what constitutes this music in order to properly evaluate its influence on the Lutheran chorale. The greater such knowledge of plainsong, the greater also will be one's appreciation of Luther's …

The Great Harlot Of Revelation Chapter Seventeen, Lorman Petersen May 1945

The Great Harlot Of Revelation Chapter Seventeen, Lorman Petersen

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The great problem before us in this thesis is: What is the value of the multifarious interpretations which have been offered concerning the images of Revelation XVII? Our thesis has the specific title. "The Great Harlot of Revelation XVII. An Evaluation of the Various Interpretations Offered Concerning", which topic centers around the most important image (The Harlot) of the chapter. But our treatise will also contain the views and interpretations regarding the other lesser symbols of the chapter --- the Beast, the kings, the seven mountains, and all those problems mentioned before.

The Lord's Prayer, The Pastor's Prayer, G. H. Smukal Apr 1945

The Lord's Prayer, The Pastor's Prayer, G. H. Smukal

Concordia Theological Monthly

On that exceeding high mountain, Jesus repulsed Satan by means of the weapon: ''Thou shalt worship the Lord, thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve." When He teaches His disciples to worship and to pray, He consistently leads them to the one true God. Therefore we are sure that the one true God is He whom Jesus wants us to address. We are to call Him our Father. Therefore we are further assured that the one true God is our Father and that our Father is the one true God.

Objective Justification, E. W. Koehler Apr 1945

Objective Justification, E. W. Koehler

Concordia Theological Monthly

The doctrine of justification is rightly regarded to be the central doctrine of the Scriptures. All other teachings of the Bible either point to it, or they radiate from it. We can understand neither the work of Christ's redemption nor the work of the Spirit's sanctification if we do not understand the doctrine of justification. Luther calls it "diesen einigen und festen Felsen," and says: "In meinem Herzen herrscht allein dieser Artikel, naemlich der Glaube on Christum, aus welchem, durch welchen und zu welchem alle meine theologischen Gedanken fliessen und zurueckfliessen." (Luthers Vorrede zum Galaterbrief, St. Louis, IX: 9.) Let …

Forgiveness In The Lxx, Richard T. Du Brau Apr 1945

Forgiveness In The Lxx, Richard T. Du Brau

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Messianic 130th Psalm sings in its key verse: "There is forgiveness with Thee." The Hebrew salach (forgiveness, to forgive) is generally rendered in the Septuagint ι̇λασυός ι̇λάσχομαι. Its primary significance is to shelter, to cover. The classics transposed its meaning to the religious procedure of the conciliation of the gods; with them ι̇λάσχομαι denotes obtaining the favor of the gods. Homer always uses it so.

I Believe In The Resurrection Of The Body, W. F. Beck Mar 1945

I Believe In The Resurrection Of The Body, W. F. Beck

Concordia Theological Monthly

The upper house of the Convocation of Canterbury, Church of England, has decided to delete the phrase "resurrection of the body" at cremation ceremonies. One bishop said that young people scientifically trained are "not so much indignant as amused at the phrase." Whenever they reach these words in the Apostles' Creed, they must experience a limp in the tongue.

The Lord's Prayer, The Pastor's Prayer, G. H. Smukal Mar 1945

The Lord's Prayer, The Pastor's Prayer, G. H. Smukal

Concordia Theological Monthly

Every prayer acceptable to God is a miracle wrought by Him and returning to Him. It may be illustrated by the letter V. Among these innumerable miracles the Lord's Prayer, in its content, sequence, and beauty, is unsurpassed. It is the summary of every God-pleasing prayer ever recorded in heaven or on earth. Every other prayer prompted by the Spirit is the Lord's Prayer in part, cast into a different form. Any opinion to the contrary is an evidence that the content of the Lord's Prayer has not been understood, nor its scope measured, nor its depth sounded.

A Definite Need In The Field Of New Testament Textual Criticism, W. Arndt Mar 1945

A Definite Need In The Field Of New Testament Textual Criticism, W. Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

There are a number of desiderata that a person who is interested in New Testament textual criticism becomes aware of; and my caption must not be interpreted as signifying that we have arrived at that happy stage of development in this field where all difficulties have disappeared excepting one and all hands can now be summoned to dispose of this one disturbing element. Without much trouble rather many needs that should be supplied could be enumerated. This afternoon I should like to specify one of these. It is, to say it at once, a more accurate classification of the manuscripts …
