An Existential Appraisal Of Selected Nigerian Fiction, Jim Nesin Omatseye

One of the two aims of this research was to elucidate from a philosophical perspective a selected body of Nigerian fiction. The second objective has been to investigate the dominant themes of the two selected novelists and relate them to existentialism.

The most essential theme was found to be colonialism and its disruption of the African culture. It was implied in the works of the novelists that authentic African culture was dislocated by British imperialism in Nigeria. In this paper I have two main purposes: (i) to outline the most general structure of morality, which is the fundamental schema of a good society, and (ii) to indict most of the mainstream views in the history of moral philosophy for their unchecked tendency toward reductionism and oversimplification. Since Socrates' attack on poetry, philosophers and critics have been faced with the problem of reconciling two convictions which seem equally pressing. While poetry (or imaginative literature) is and has been valued as a source of insight and knowledge, it also seems clear that poetic meaning is of a rather different sort than that found in science, ordinary language, or (to introduce the classical contrast) prose. Philosophical theories of poetry, then, take one of two forms: either they deny one of these two beliefs, implying perhaps that poetry has only nonsensical or literal meaning, or they provide a cognitive analysis …

There are limits to the possible subjects of justification. Typically, it concerns human behavior and things that human intervention can affect. Failing special circumstances, it makes no sense to speak of justifying the weather. A Defense Of Naturalism In Moral Education (1975), Philip C. Guin

The dissertation investigates the possibility of a naturalist approach to moral education. The two initial chapters deal with questions of freedom and moral relativity, respectively. In regard to moral relativity, it is argued that the facts of cultural diversity fail to support a thesis of cultural relativity. The final two chapters focus on anti-naturalist attempts to discredit naturalism, and on the relation of naturalism to moral education. It is argued that anti-naturalists have failed to offer an adequate account of ethical and moral life, or of the critical demands laid upon the agent in making moral decisions.
