This paper contributes to the defense of the nonderivability thesis; that is, the thesis that no set of purely descriptive statements can entail an evaluative statement. Thus, it is impossible to give objective justification of any value judgment.

The general public, as well as many leaders of our society tend to view science as descriptive and to value science mainly for "practical" applications. Although technological implications are important, science cannot legitimately be considered primarily descriptive. Science is a creative activity, involving human judgment, and can most fruitfully be thought of as metaphor or play. The practical value of science, of the liberal arts in general, and of academe is that they provide the playful approach to experience which is a necessary basis for successful planning and action, and which makes us human.

Against the prevailing "return to nature" educational philosophy of his day, Nietzsche stressed sublimation, the active redirecting of one's life energy or the channeling of one's power in the service of creativity, and the inevitability of suffering as essential in the attainment of free­dom. The current educational practice which mitigates the importance of sublimation and suffering were, in his view, a subversive tactic of the German State to keep the reins on individual autonomy and creativity and insure conformity to the status quo.

The theme of the conflict of old and new, tradition and modernity, east and west in contemporary India has been a major concern of many Indo-Anglican novelists of the post-independence era. This study focuses on the reactions of various authors to this theme, as expressed by their treatment of it in the novels.

Four particular aspects of the theme which are explored in the novels, the fate of the family, economic upheaval, a questioning of religion, and the impact of the conflict on the individual person are discussed.

The general theory of perception proposed by Roderick Chisholm in his book Perceiving: A Philosophical Study¹ has gained considerable acceptance among contemporary philosophers of perception. In this paper, I will review and evaluate one part of this theory and show where I believe an important modification is necessary.

Chisholm distinguishes what he thinks are two importantly different senses of “perceive,” a propositional and a nonpropositional sense, and then proposes a definition of each. The propositional sense of “perceive” is expressed in contexts in which what is perceived is referred to by a propositional clause, as in
