In the newly developed Catastrophe Theory of Rene Thorn and E.C. Zeeman, it is possible to find mathematical interpretation of certain aspects of Hegelian and Marxist dialectics. Specifically, the three "classical" dialectical principles, (1) the transformation of quantity into quality, ( 2) the mutual interpenetration(or - the unity and struggle) of opposites, and (3) the negation of the negation, can be modeled using the seven "elementary catastrophe " given by Thom , especially the catastrophe known as the "cusp." Far from being an empty metaphysics or scholasticism, as critics have argued , these principles embody genuine insights into a class …

Grimms' Marchen are not only a delight to encounter, but they contain material of substantial philosophical value. This is a philosophical analysis of Grimms' tales, intended to introduce folklore to the realm of philosophy. Two major areas are investigated. They are the value of Marchen to a theory of knowledge and the existential value of these tales in influencing living, thinking, and acting. The major areas analyzed are the epistemology or world view, horror, humor, and ethics of these tales. The epistemology section discusses the hybrid nature of these Marchen as a synthesis of mythic consciousness and scientific or discursive …

Secondary School Curriculum

Suki, a young adolescent, loves poetry and its world of metaphor. Her friend Harry hates literature class and the idea of writing poetry frightens him. Their worldviews begin to converge as the two come to see logic and poetry as two ways of finding meaning in life experience, though not before they have confronted a number of problems of language, knowledge and aesthetics. As Suki, Harry and their classmates work through the obstacles they encounter in creative writing, they construct new understandings of concepts like friendship, freedom, integrity, originality, harmony, form, balance, personhood and meaning.

Scholarship

If morality were simply a matter of knowing rules and obeying them, then moral education would consist of developing in children a conscientiousness that would permit them to carry out these rules in a happy, unquestioning fashion. But morality is not so simple. It is not clear that there are rules for every situation, nor is it clear that accepting uncritically those rules which might apply contributes to children's development. Consequently, the child must be equipped to cope with situations lacking clear guidelines, situations that nevertheless require one to make choices and to accept responsibility for them.
