Plotinus' views on man and his value must be closely related to his views of the One. His first principle is radically different from that of the Platonists, Aristotelians, and Stoics who precede him. In many respects, as in all other areas of his thought, his conception is a synthesis of what went before, but it cannot be overemphasized that it is a new conception, a dynamic first principle whose character as efficient cause is to be viewed in terms of Eros and of will as much as of mind and knowledge.

Robert Coover is one of a group of young American novelists who, using philosophical and theological frameworks, have used literature as a vehicle by which to exp7ore metaphysical areas that have been largely ignored in recent decades. An abiding interest in Coover's fiction, as befits a former philosophy professor (Bard College), is the whole question of order vs. chaos, or, perhaps more appropriately, an Apollonian vs. a Dionysian world view. The question of unity is the central problem facing the reader of Nietzsche's philosophy. In his apparent lack of system, Nietzsche seems to be confused, contradictory, and chaotic. This dissertation argues that Nietzsche's philosophy is not irrational in these ways but is consistent and orderly, for the concept of the overman unifies virtually all of his work. In explaining how the overman so functions, this dissertation attempts to proceed from Nietzsche's self-reflexive, anti-philosophical and anti-academic perspective; yet, for present purposes, it also recognizes the need to reorganize Nietzsche's non-linear patterns of thought into more conventional lines. Zeno’S First Argument Concerning Plurality, William J. Prior

Philosophy

Until quite recently, scholars have been nearly unanimous inaccepting as correct Plato's characterization of Zeno of Elea as a faithful disciple of Parmenides. They have also adopted a reconstruction of his first argument against plurality made by Fränkel².Both this view of Zeno and the accepted Interpretation of thereconstructed argument, however, have lately been subjected to incisive criticism by Friedrich Solmsen³. Solmsen has claimed that Zeno was no Eleatic, but rather a dialectician without positive philosophical commitments; and he has used the argument reconstructed by Fränkel to support his Interpretation.

Solmsen's case rests on three Claims. First, …

It formulates the problem and leaves the solution to the very special characters involved in the drama. These special characters are depicted as five definite forms of human experience. Each is essential to the problem; each contributes to the solution. In short, the coming to terms with the problem lies within each of them. The solution does not arise outside their action. The question of whether Pascal was a philosopher or not has not always been the dominant problem of Pascal scholarship. But since the advent of Existentialism, there has been renewed interest in the work of Pascal and its philosophic value. Upon examination one finds that both Pascal scholars and historians of philosophy have wrestled with the problem of whether to call Pascal a true philosopher. This thesis is an exploration of the category of praxis in Marx’s philosophy. By means of this it is suggested that the category of praxis is the central category of Marx's philosophy and that it provides a means by which the development and unity of Marx’s work may be analyzed. The method of exposition is to discuss the definition and subdivisions of this category as found in Marx’s work. In the first chapter it is demonstrated that the category of praxis results from Marx's synthesis of Hegel's idealism and French materialism. Praxis is defined as sensuous human activity. In the …
