As the weeks have come and gone, my inflated expectations for this address have been punctured. I once hoped to take the presidential torch into some unexplored recess of the philosophical cave, there to illuminate an unsuspected cavern that would sparkle with truth. In the Histoire de Jenni (1775), his last major conte, Voltaire returns to a pattern similar in many ways to the one he had used in his first important tale, Micromégas. In both, as Vivienne Mylne has pointed out, two discussion scenes—the first near the beginning of the tale and a second more substantial one—are set in a narrative frame involving a voyage. Critics have generally attributed this return to a structure relying heavily on debate to convey his message to Voltaire’s increasing use of the philosophical dialogue in his later years. I begin and end with the idea that every metaphysical theory is a mode of philosophic discrimination –-- that the central concepts and categories of a theory convey a form of philosophic awareness. For the purpose of meta–physical comparison I consider the theories of Aristotle, John Dewey, John Herman Randall, and Alfred North Whitehead. The process of philosophic assessment I endorse identifies similarities and differences in outlook as well as ascertains adequacies of formulation, portrayal, and generalization. If morality were simply a matter of knowing rules and obeying them, then moral education would consist of developing in children a conscientiousness that would permit them to carry out these rules in a happy, unquestioning fashion. But morality is not so simple. It is not clear that there are rules for every situation, nor is it clear that accepting uncritically those rules which might apply contributes to children's development. Consequently, the child must be equipped to cope with situations lacking clear guidelines, situations that nevertheless require one to make choices and to accept responsibility for them. Ethos, or the character of the speaker, is a subject of interest to students of rhetoric. This study traces the concepts of ethos from classical to modern times, and identifies philosophical value systems on which these concepts are based.

Hypothesis:

The study explores the hypothesis that similarities and differences exist between classical and modern concepts of ethos and that the concepts can generally be identified with philosophical value systems.

Criteria and Procedure:

Two moral principles have been basic to the legal decisions concerning the rights and duties toward the newly dead. They are the duty to give decent burial and the denial to anyone of a right to ownership of the dead body for commercial profit. The next-of-kin-rather than the church or the state­ have come to bear the primary responsibility for providing decent burial.

The familial duty to give decent burial has come to be understood as a legal right to determine what is to be done to the body in the interval between death and burial.

One purpose of this investigation of moral education in the elementary schools, was to find information in order to evaluate the current status of moral education at this level.

Another part of the investigation was to experiment with presenting and teaching moral education principles in a fifth-grade classroom, and make a report of the results.

The thesis was written to satisfy the final requirements for a Specialist Degree in Guidance and Counseling, at Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, Illinois.

A preparatory presentation of the origin of the Edgar Cayce psychic material and its approach to the nature of the mind and sleep is made. Then, the psychic material of the late Edgar Cayce is examined in relation to dreams and dream interpretation.

Dreams, according to the Edgar Cayce Readings and the author, are meaningful, purposefully directed experiences that have as their goal the full development of personal potential. Suggestions are given for the recording and interpretation of dreams.

The theory of the Form of the Good in the Republic is truly and coherently the centerpiece of the canonical Platonism of the middle dialogues, the centerpiece of Plato's metaphysics, epistemology, ethics and politics, and even his theory of love and art. In this theory of the Form of the Good Plato was truly the first grand philosophical synthesiser. If to achieve such a grand synthesis he had to employ a few unholy combinations, such as the combination of reality, goodness, and self-predication, he may perhaps be forgiven - at least if he is understood.

The first part of the paper explores Aristotle's biological concept of an eidos (species or form) in comparison with modern biological taxonomy. The second part outlines normative determinants of an Aristotelian eidos. The third part considers two passages in which Aristotle compares non-biological eide to biological: pleasures, in EN 10.4-5, and kinds of government in Pol. 4.4.
