Tom Robbins' Chink: A Posthumous Zarathustra, Charles Taylor

This essay examines the ideas of one of the central characters in Tom Robbins’ 1977 novel, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues/ in relation to the thinking of Friedrich Nietzsche’s Zarathustra. It makes no argument for any influence of Nietzsche upon Robbins but rather considers similarities in thought as such.

Human emotion is, to some, an embarrassment. They regard our emotional aspect as not fully human; like some grotesque offspring, it should be hidden away in our psychic cellar or gotten rid of altogether. Our emotions (or "passions" or "affections") are powerful, but they may be kept at bay by our fair child, reason. The enmity seems natural; reason represents the orderly, the proper, the Apollonian; emotion is the disruptive, the capricious, the Dionysian. The accomplishments of cool reason may be consumed in the heat of passion. To give vent to emotion is thus to turn irrational and to reveal …

L. Frank Baum’s Ozma of Oz is a splendid tale of intellectual adventure full of thought experiments, including a tree that bears lunch boxes and napkins as fruit, beings like humans but with wheels at the ends of their four limbs, a mechanical man (called “Tiktok”) who can think, speak, and act but is not alive, and a princess with thirty alternative heads and accompanying temperaments. One could base a whole philosophy course on Ozma of Oz. One can also read it simply for fun – including, of course, philosophical fun.

Plato has been called the “father of rational theology.” This thesis is an attempt to examine in the light of contemporary Platonic scholarship five of Plato’s essentially religious doctrines insofar as they support the idea that Plato’s theory of good and evil is rational. Chapters 1 and 2 examine the plausibility of Plato’s theory of knowledge. Chapter 3 states briefly his theory of Forms, while Chapter 4 attempts to give this doctrine credence by analysing those aspects of it which seem least convincing. This study investigates the influence of Alexander Bain (1818-1903) and Herbert Spencer (1820-1903) upon William James (1842-1910). James is generally considered to be the foremost American psychologist and the one who "introduced" experimental psychology to the United States. James had become familiar with the psychological writings of Bain and Spencer early in his career, and he used Spencer's The Principles of Psychology and later Bain's The Senses and the Intellect and The Emotions and the Will as textbooks for his course in psychology at Harvard. The controversy about metriopatheia and apatheia, which generated such heat in later Greek philosophy, is one between the concept of a bipartite or tripartite soul, in which the lower part of parts can never be eradicated - at least while the soul is in the body - but must constantly be chastised. In practice, Stoic eupatheia in practice is very similar to a properly moderated Platonic-Aristotelian pathos, but that is irrelevant to the main point. We find in Plutarch and other Platonists of the period a remarkable unwillingness or inability to comprehend what the Stoic position was.

Marxism, as a philosophical system, attempts to provide an accurate analysis of man and his social institutions. Behaviorism, as a system of psychology, claims that its method is fundamental to an understanding of human nature. Both systems justify their claims on the grounds that they are employing methods which are scientific in character. Marxism bases its method on historical analysis, maintaining that history unfolds in an orderly, predictable manner and that a proper analysis of it reveals scientific laws.
