Marx's Theory Of Knowledge, Bradford C. Brown Apr 1987

Marx's Theory Of Knowledge, Bradford C. Brown

Whittier Scholars Program

This project is a close analysis of Karl Marx philosophy and provides historical context for its roots and influence. This study includes a brief introduction, a chronology of his works and is split up into two parts. The first section features historical context which includes the influence of Romanticism. The second part is a reflection on the theory of Knowledge which includes Marx’s objective nature and the experience of being in nature, being against nature and the natural being. The next chapter focuses on objective consciousness which in turn focuses on consciousness in being, consciousness against being, and conscious being. …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

Observing the recent renascence of the Midwest, DAVID R. PICHASKE takes his readers on a tour with stops in Alliance and Springfield, Illinois, Madison, Minnesota, and the Platte River Valley in Nebraska. He finds decay and an understanding of what has been lost, tempered with hope for the future. Associate Professor and Chairman of the English Department at Southwest State University in Marshall, Minnesota, Pichaske has written three books (Chaucer's Literary Pilgrimage and A Generation in Motion being the most recent) along with articles and poems in a wide variety of venues.

The Aporias Of De Anima Γ 4, 429b22-430a9., John Driscoll Mar 1987

The Aporias Of De Anima Γ 4, 429b22-430a9., John Driscoll

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Aristotle introduces the assumption that mind is, as described by Anaxagoras, 'without mixture,' later restating it in his own terms as the view that mind is simple and ἀπαθές and without anything in common with anything else. This leads to two aporias: how, Aristotle asks, will thinking be possible under the assumptions stated, and how can mind itself be an object of thought? He then states two theses of his own: while mind is its objects potentially it is nothing in actuality until thinking occurs, and in the case of things without matter what thinks is the same as what …

Epicurus On Pleasure And Happiness, Julia Annas Mar 1987

Epicurus On Pleasure And Happiness, Julia Annas

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

I concentrate on Epicurus' attempt to show that pleasure is complete, not just one aim we have for its own sake but ultimately the only non-instrumental aim we have. Epicurus tells us that we will be happy, have the best overall life, by having pleasure as our final aim, and that we shall achieve this by living according to the virtues, by becoming a certain kind of person.

Gulled Into An "I"-Word, Or Much Ado About A Pronoun, D'Orsay W. Pearson Jan 1987

Gulled Into An "I"-Word, Or Much Ado About A Pronoun, D'Orsay W. Pearson

Quidditas

Despite the warning of the editors of the 1975 New Arden Twelfth Night the M.O.A.I. sequence of Maria's riddle for Malvolio is "a sequence of letters expressly designed to make Malvolio interpret them as he does, thus prolonging the comic scene," and that "attempts to wring further meaning from them are misplaced" (Lothiam and Craik 68), there is a strong probability that the letters, rather than being a meaningless sequence, were intended by Shakespeare as a fairly simple orthographic joke—one which expands Malvolio's characterization as a socially ambitious closet sybarite, deficient in a social accomplishment expected of those who would …

Organ Procurement, Values And Public Policy, Ronald P. Hamel Jan 1987

Organ Procurement, Values And Public Policy, Ronald P. Hamel

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The success of organ transplants in recent years has created a shortage of transplantable cadaver organs. Voluntarism, the primary mode of organ procurement currently in use nationwide, appears to be no longer successful. Policy makers and others are examining alternatives to the current system, namely, presumed consent (routine salvaging) and required request. In this process, there is a danger in considering only the effectiveness of the means and neglecting the value and belief commitments that underlie them. These need to be brought to the surface because they ultimately contribute toward shaping the moral character of society. In this light, required …

Carmelite Propaganda In A Fifteenth-Century French Gradual Fragment, John B. Friedman Jan 1987

Carmelite Propaganda In A Fifteenth-Century French Gradual Fragment, John B. Friedman

Quidditas

The late Middle Ages was a difficult period for the mendicant orders. Many of their claims to be the "New Apostles," with special efficacy in the confessional, the pulpit, and the classroom—as Penn Szittya has recently shown—were under sharp attack. Though less visible as teachers and preachers than the Dominicans and Franciscans, the Carmelites were also the victims of anti-mendicant hostility from an early period. Furthermore, they were disliked by the other orders because they claimed superiority be reason of alleged great antiquity and the special patronage of the Virgin, for Carmelite legend holds that the Old Testament prophets Elijah …

What Is A Belief State?, Curtis Brown Jan 1987

What Is A Belief State?, Curtis Brown

Philosophy Faculty Research

What we believe depends on more than the purely intrinsic facts about us: facts about our environment or context also help determine the contents of our beliefs.1 The observation has led several writers to hope that beliefs can be divided, as it were, into two components: a "core" that depends only on the individual's intrinsic properties; and a periphery that depends on the individual's context, including his or her history, environment, and linguistic community.
