Walt Whitman, according to EDWARD M. WHEAT, conceived of Leaves of Grass as a means of expressing and reinvigorating America’s democratic ideals, an epic intending revolutionary change. Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of American Studies at the University of Southern Mississippi, Wheat has published several articles related to his research interests in politics and literature, political culture and socialization, and public administration.
A. CARL BREDAHL intends to rescue from undeserved insignificance Ernest Hemingway’s Green Hills of Africa, an effort he hopes to expand into a book-length manuscript. Bredahl is Professor of English …

The Causal Indicator Analysis Of Knowledge, Steven Luper
The Causal Indicator Analysis Of Knowledge, Steven Luper
Philosophy Faculty Research
In this paper I want to describe and motivate an approach to knowledge that I call the Causal Indicator Analysis. My strategy will be to sketch (in Part I) the main features of an adequate account of knowledge, then use my sketch (in Part II) to reveal some of the faults of some of the main analyses defended today. I will be particularly interested in discussing the work of Fred Dretske, whose views have significantly influenced my own. With these tasks behind me, I will offer my own account in Part III, and argue that it has the features an …
Applied Mathematics As Social Contract, Philip J. Davis
Applied Mathematics As Social Contract, Philip J. Davis
Humanistic Mathematics Network Journal
The author takes the position that mathematical education must redefine its goals so as to create a citizenry with sufficient knowledge to provide social backpressure on future mathematizations. This can be accomplished by increasing the part of mathematical education that is devoted to the description and interpretation of the processes of mathematization and by allowing the technicalities of the formal operations within mathematics itself to be deemphasized or automated out by computer.

The Plotinian Reduction Of Aristotle's Categories, Christos C. Evangeliou
The Plotinian Reduction Of Aristotle's Categories, Christos C. Evangeliou
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
I propose to consider the Plotinian reduction of Aristotle’s categories, especially as presented in the problematic VI. 3. 3. The following questions will be discussed: Which of the Aristotelian categories did Plotinus consider dispensable and for what specific reasons? Are there any non-Aristotelian categories in the Plotinian set and, if so, where do they come from and how do they function? By what method, if any, did Plotinus determine the number of his set of categories and why just five? Finally, why is it that Plotinus is the last, in a long series of Platonists, to sharply criticize Aristotle’s doctrine …
Ends And Intrinsic Goods In Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, Richard Kraut
Ends And Intrinsic Goods In Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, Richard Kraut
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
(The attached paper is in fact a longish abstract. Here is a SHORT abstract)
This paper considers some connections between NE I and NE X.7-8. I argue that the two are consistent, and that Aristotle proposes two dominant ends, one for the philosophical life, another for the political life.
Substance, Process And Outcome In Constitutional Theory, David B. Lyons
Substance, Process And Outcome In Constitutional Theory, David B. Lyons
Faculty Scholarship
Scholarship in philosophy proceeds at a slower pace than in the law. As Tom Lehrer, the poet laureate of a recent generation, might have said, the law biz travels on a faster track. Or so it seems to a philosopher who has recently been treading the tracks of constitutional lawyers.
And so it is with apprehension that I take as my text a book that was published as long ago as 1980. As the title of this lecture might suggest to someone with so long a memory, the book is John Hart Ely's Democracy and Distrust.' That work provoked an …
