(1991) The Community Of Inquiry And Educational Structure., David K. Kennedy Jan 1991

(1991) The Community Of Inquiry And Educational Structure., David K. Kennedy

Collected Papers of David Kennedy

Young people engaged in philosophical dialogue sometimes exhibit resistance to the program, expressed in boredom, impatience, and sometimes even rejection. My theory is that, in addition to a lot of reasons like the ones just cited, the problem has to do with the way schools and classrooms are structured, which in turn is the result of an overall educational model--what Matthew Lipman has referred to as "tribal" or "information-acquisition" education. I want to argue that there is a "new" educational model—in fact it is already about 200 years old—and that it has the strucmral characteristics which provide place for what …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

MARTIN TROPP considers the message of Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with reference to contemporary views of mind, body, and will. Tropp is Professor of English at Babson College. He is the author of scholarly articles on such writers as Nathaniel West, and two books, one on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein monster and the other on horror stories in modern culture, 1818- 1918.

Among the writers newly found in the more open society of Gorbachev's era, RICHARD L. CHAPPLE observes, the talent of Tatyana Tolstaya is notable for creating portraits of ordinary people of the middle class. They …

Subversion Of System / Systems Of Subversions, Gary Shapiro Jan 1991

Subversion Of System / Systems Of Subversions, Gary Shapiro

Philosophy Faculty Publications

What might it mean to think outside or beyond the Hegelian system of philosophy? Already in Hegel's own time this was a question that came to occupy those who labored under the weight of his speculative and comprehensive system of thought. The easiest and most immediately appealing strategy was to seize upon some category that seemed to be relatively neglected within the system, something that seemed to have been too easily aufgehoben into the totality. Kierkegaard is sometimes represented as centering his challenges to the Hegelian system around the valorization of the unhappy consciousness; that is, the consciousness aware of …

[Introduction To] Alcyone: Nietzsche On Gifts, Noise, And Women, Gary Shapiro Jan 1991

[Introduction To] Alcyone: Nietzsche On Gifts, Noise, And Women, Gary Shapiro

Bookshelf

Shapiro explores an interrelated series of themes that contest and offer alternatives to some of the traditional concepts of metaphysics. The notion of gift giving and related ideas are seen to play fundamental roles in the economy of Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Shapiro articulates the relevance of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Marcel Mauss, and Georges Bataille for the thought of the gift and shows that Nietzsche's writing contains a conception of an archaic economy that is radically different from the order of property and exchange usually associated with Western metaphysics. This leads to a critique of Martin Heidegger's interpretation of Nietzsche …

Le Contrat Social, Une Œuvre Genevoise? L’École Du Droit Naturel Et Le Débat Politique À Genève. La Réponse De Rousseau, Helena Rosenblatt Jan 1991

Le Contrat Social, Une Œuvre Genevoise? L’École Du Droit Naturel Et Le Débat Politique À Genève. La Réponse De Rousseau, Helena Rosenblatt

Publications and Research

Mountains Of Tibet (1989) By Mordecai Gerstein, Maughn B. Gregory Jan 1991

Mountains Of Tibet (1989) By Mordecai Gerstein, Maughn B. Gregory

Picture Books

High in the mountains of Tibet, a little girl was born who loved to fly kites. Mordecai Gerstein’s picture book, inspired by the Tibetan Book of the Dead, tells of the girl’s previous life as a Tibetan woodcutter who loved to fly kites, and the decisions he made after death to choose the circumstances of his next life. The idea of reincarnation belongs to the culture of many parts of the world. Some adults avoid discussing stories like this with children because they don’t want to face the question, ‘But is it really true?’ Children, however, are often more …

Bee-Man Of Orn By Frank R. Stockton, Gareth B. Matthews, Lenore Carlisle Reilly, Shari Tishman

Wise Owl: Talking and Thinking about Children’s Literature

The Bee-Man of Orn is an enjoyable yarn, beautifully illustrated by Maurice Sendak. It is also an intellectually stimulating story. Use it to think with your students about challenging ideas like unusual friendships, magic, bravery, and growing up.

Gaspara Stampa's Poetry For Performance, Janet L. Smarr Jan 1991

Gaspara Stampa's Poetry For Performance, Janet L. Smarr

Quidditas

During the mid-sixteenth century in Italy, when a remarkable number of women joined in the production of poetry, one of the channels open to their pursuit of intellectual life and fame was the Venetian saloon. There music and poetry mingled as poems were frequently sung or recited before an audience rather than read privately in silence. The poetry of Gaspara Stampa was produced for this milieu. Published in 1554, a year after her death, her collection of more than three hundred poems has been approached in two main ways: as the autobiographical self-expression of a passionate woman and more recently …

Overall Laughing One And The Experiences, Anina Porter Adams Jan 1991

Overall Laughing One And The Experiences, Anina Porter Adams

Institute for the Humanities Theses

A fictional play based on the study of writings by psychotherapist Carl Gustav Jung. The action is set in the imaginary realm of archetypes, amoral personified energies which appear in tales from diverse cultures. In this play the mythical characters move in an ordered, ritualistic manner. They are dependent upon a geometrically centered black box for the provision of human forms through which they experience "being." A female is the human form provided in this instance and she combines her own energy with that of the other characters though she is not conscious of this fact. The archetypal energies focus …

The Theodicy Of The Timaeus, Thomas M. Robinson Dec 1990

The Theodicy Of The Timaeus, Thomas M. Robinson

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

I suggest that any explanation of the Demiurge that has a chance of being correct must take into account the fact that he is invariably described in non-contingent terms, and the entities to which many have wished to reduce him (the world’s soul, or the rationality within it) in invariably and unambiguously contingent terms. This holds true despite Timaeus’s readiness to speak without apparent qualm of the Demiurge as either a father or a craftsman or both, or even - after the manner of Anaxagoras - to talk of him on occasion simply as Reason; whatever the variants in the …

Seneca And The Stoic View Of Suicide, Walter Englert Dec 1990

Seneca And The Stoic View Of Suicide, Walter Englert

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

will present a summary of the Stoic doctrine on suicide before Seneca, followed by an analysis of Seneca’s own views. Our sources on Stoic views of suicide before Seneca are meager. But they allow us to construct a coherent Stoic theory of suicide, and in Seneca we see the theory fleshed out. Rist is right to point out that we find a connection between suicide and libertas for the first time in Seneca, but wrong to suppose that it is inconsistent with earlier Stoic teaching, pathological, or based on a hatred of life.8 Seneca’s views are consistent with earlier, orthodox …

The Philosophical Economy Of Plato's Psychology: Common Concepts In The Timaeus, Dorothea Aline Frede Dec 1990

The Philosophical Economy Of Plato's Psychology: Common Concepts In The Timaeus, Dorothea Aline Frede

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Plato's insistence that the eternal immobile model is “the real thing” and the mobile world only an image is to stress the sincerity of his conviction that the intelligible pattern, the unchangeable network of principles, must be the foundation of the physical reality. Only because there is such a fundamentum in re can we have concepts that allow us to understand and explain the world. Without such really existing concepts our thinking would be nothing, it would be a groping for stability in a changing world that could at best provide similarities without any fix point to determine their nature. …
