(1993) Reflections On Karl Popper And Philosophy For Children, Philip C. Guin

Collected Papers of Philip C. Guin

The purpose of this essay is to ascertain the extent to which Karl Popper's conjectures about the status of knowledge can provide underpinnings for a new perspective on education, and in particular, a perspective which allows for a better understanding of Philosophy for Children.

Salus Populi Suprema Lex: The Impact Of Three Major European Thinkers On The Constitution Of The United States, Corey W. Smith Jan 1993

Salus Populi Suprema Lex: The Impact Of Three Major European Thinkers On The Constitution Of The United States, Corey W. Smith

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Within the context of discussions regarding the Constitution and its forming, great emphasis is given to the history of the ideas which influenced and/or became a part of that document. The general term given to the line of thought of which our Constitution is a part is "natural law" theory, referring to the rights which the founding fathers, or natural law theorists in general, deemed so basic as to be understood. Such a doctrine manifests as the "inalienable rights ... life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" in the Declaration of Independence, but in a more subdued and practical manner …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

During the 1989 democracy demonstrations in China, Americans struggled to understand, and in so doing challenged their own stereotypes about the people of China. PETER SCHECKNER, who with his wife was then teaching American culture in Beijing at a tourist college, had hoped to challenge his Chinese students' stereotypes about American society and found his expectations repeatedly called into question. Author of books on D. H. Lawrence and Chartist poetry, Scheckner is Associate Professor of English at Ramapo College of New Jersey.

The great truths often present themselves to us repeatedly and in unlikely circumstances, as EUGENE KRAFT demonstrates in …

(1993) A Night Under The Stars (Philosophical Story), Ann Margaret Sharp

Collected Papers of Ann Margaret Sharp

Not long ago, I learned about death. Til then I hadn't thought about it. My father's father who lived with us died. He was my grandfather. He was also my close friend. I loved s him very much. One day he was here and the next day he wasn't. I felt like I had a big hole in my chest.

(1993) Simon: A Story About Being The Same And Being Different, Laurance J. Splitter

Collected Papers of Laurance J. Splitter

Simon is a high school student who is simultaneously learning about political equality and HIV/AIDS. He is confused about the differences between sex, sexuality, and sexual preference, and whether sexuality is really a preference. In discussions with schoolteachers, classmates, friends, and his mum, Simon also thinks about discrimination, hate, and the risks and benefits of hiding one’s identity and “going along with the guys.”

Me llamo Brendan. En mi país, no hay mucha gente que se llame Brendan. Me gusta mi nombre. Me pregunto si algún día llegaré a soñar en mi nuevo idioma. Pienso en muchas cosas. Incluso pienso cuando estoy dormido.

(1993) Why Philosophy For Children Now?, David K. Kennedy Jan 1993

(1993) Why Philosophy For Children Now?, David K. Kennedy

Collected Papers of David Kennedy

Philosophy for Children appears to be completely new in the history of culture and of education. If this is true, then it is appropriate to ask why Why Philosophy for Children, here, now, in the late 20th century West? What was missing before now (or what is missing now) which leads us to think philosophy a reasonable thing to do with children? Why then, Philosophy for Children now? Because children have with the help of vast socio-economic forces, finally escaped their lowly status on the great chain of being, and been invented as individuals and thinkers. Because in a world …

(1993) Child And Fool In The Western Wisdom Tradition, David K. Kennedy Jan 1993

(1993) Child And Fool In The Western Wisdom Tradition, David K. Kennedy

Collected Papers of David Kennedy

The child and the fooL as they were presented in wisdom discourse stand for a crisis in the human understanding of self in its relation to whole, or cosmos. This crisis is, in fact, the very crisis represented by philosophy, if philosophy is thought of in that ultimate sense identified by Socrates in the Phaedo "practicing death'. For death is the great, paradigmatic crisis in human understanding. Like a fool, Socrates takes "practicing" it as the most important thing a person could do, rather than, like a sensible man, avoiding it in any way possible. This reversal leads him into …

Fractured Certainties: Epistemology And Ontology In David Malouf's Child's Play, The Great World And Remembering Babylon, Chris Lyon Jan 1993

Fractured Certainties: Epistemology And Ontology In David Malouf's Child's Play, The Great World And Remembering Babylon, Chris Lyon

Theses : Honours

This thesis is an exploration of the way in which David Malouf develops ideas of epistemology and ontology in three of his novels. The novels discussed are Child's Play (1982), The Great World (1990) and Remembering Babylon (1993). Of particular concern here are the different ways in which figures in the text are constructed as having imperfect and sometimes contradictory systems of making sense of their world.

Liberty, Chandran Kukathas Jan 1993

Liberty, Chandran Kukathas

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Such is the rhetorical appeal of the idea of liberty that a variety of political philosophiesclaim to honour it. Republicans and Marxists, no less than libertarians and liberals, maintain that they and they alone are the true defenders of freedom. The literature ofcontemporary political theory is thus replete with rival analyses of the meaning ofliberty, and disputes about its measurement, distribution and institutional requirements. Our aim here is to gain some understanding of the meaning and the conditionsof liberty by working through the thicket of contemporary argument, though we mayhave to rest content with a better knowledge of the terrain.

Sympathy For The Monastery: Monks And Their Stereotypes In The Canterbury Tales, Shiela Pardee Jan 1993

Sympathy For The Monastery: Monks And Their Stereotypes In The Canterbury Tales, Shiela Pardee

Quidditas

The two monks that appear in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, the pilgrim Daun Piers and Daun John in the Shipman's Tale, seem to be everything one would expect from medieval estates satire. They are attractive outdoorsmen with sophisticated appetites, fine clothing, and healthy complexions; in spite of their vows of poverty, they are the very image oof medieval prosperity. Although Chaucer conforms to the image of the worldly monk familiar to his audience, his intentions are more complex than simply to replicate and confirm the stereotype. In addition, he calls attention to the effects of the stereotype on the clerics …

Divergent Journeys: Devils, Readers, And The Narrator's Art In 'Þe Deuelis Perlament', Gary D. Schmidt

Quidditas

In 1509, Wynkyn de Worde published a five-hundred-line poem that he, in defiance of the poet's own suggestion that the piece be called 'þe Deuelis Perlament' (1 490), entitled 'The Parliment of Fyendys'. It would remain known by that title — if it can be said to have been known at all — for the next three centuries, when the Roxburghe Club reprinted de Worde's text about 1820 for private distribution. A wider audience would wait almost another half-century for Furnivall's EETS edition in 1868. But still another century would pass before 'þe Deuelis Perlament' began to be taken seriously …
