Althusser And Ideological Criticism Of The Arts, Richard Thomas Eldridge
Althusser And Ideological Criticism Of The Arts, Richard Thomas Eldridge
Philosophy Faculty Works
Louis Althusser's 1970 essay “Ideology and ideological state apparatuses” is arguably the most influential and important document in contemporary critical practice and its theory. In one way this is puzzling, for the essay contains almost nothing that can be recognized as an argument. It does not put forward a causal theory of the rise and fall of forms of social life. It offers no deductions, and it contains only a few sketchily described examples of ideologies. The essay is instead filled with oracular pronouncements, couched in a terminology partly invented and partly cobbled together from the Marxist tradition and from …
Sheltering The Homeless: Hospitals In Medieval Catalonia, James W. Brodman
Sheltering The Homeless: Hospitals In Medieval Catalonia, James W. Brodman
Quidditas
Shelter for the temporarily homeless, whether or not they were needy in the modern sense, was as typical a charity in the tons and villages of medieval Europe as was providing food for the hungry. The Rule of St Benedict, as well as local Hispanic customs, imposed the obligation of hospitality upon monasteries, and likewise the growing towns of the eleventh and twelfth centuries saw the need to provide beds for those who were not householders. Those served were a diverse lot: pilgrims wending their way to shrine like Santiago, clergy and others in town on business, wandering beggars and …
The Experience Of The Black Death In Bologna As Revealed By The Notarial Registers, Shona Kelly Wray
The Experience Of The Black Death In Bologna As Revealed By The Notarial Registers, Shona Kelly Wray
Quidditas
The Black Death of 1348 has fascinated readers and scholars for centuries. In this century it has been the subject of innumerable debates. Historians have argued back and forth about the demographic effects of the plague, about whether or not it instigated a period of economic depression, or even whether it represented a major event in history. Similarly, disagreement has raged, both inside and outside of the historical discipline, about the medical history and epidemiology of the plague. Fewer studies, however, have focused on the more immediate effects of the plague in localized areas. These scholars have attempted to uncover …
Spenser The Borderer: Boundary, Property, Identity In A View Of The Present State Of Ireland And Book 6 Of The Faerie Queene, Eva Gold
Quidditas
In 1581[–82], Lodowick Bryskett wrote to Sir Francis Walsingham about giving up his position as an administrator to take up the 'perillous' life of a 'borderer', one who sought social and financial 'securitie' from land on the borders of English settlements in Ireland: 'I meane to make proofe (God willing) whether the lyfe of a borderer in this land be a lyke perillous vnto all men, and to see if a just and honest simple lyfe, may not even among the most Barbarous people of the world breede securitie to him that shall live nere them or emong them'. The …
Inventing The Middle Ages, Glenn W. Olsen
Inventing The Middle Ages, Glenn W. Olsen
Quidditas
Norman Cantor seems to have decided, as a kind of perpetual outsider (in spite of his Princeton and Oxford education), that he has nothing to lose by telling it all. Of his Inventing the Middle Ages: The Lives, Works, and Ideas of the Great Medievalists of the Twentieth Century (William Morrow and Company, New York 1991), Lee Patterson says accurately on the dust jacket: 'Intriguing, informative, irritating, and vastly entertaining, Inventing the Middle Ages will rattle lots of cages'. I am not sure that this book has raised Cantor's status in the eyes of very many practicing medievalists, and indeed …

Reply To Allison, Nelson T. Potter Jr.
Reply To Allison, Nelson T. Potter Jr.
Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications
In "Kant's Doctrine of Obligatory Ends," Henry Allison offers an interpretation of this central doctrine of the Tugendlehre portion of Kant's Metaphysics of Morals that partly agrees with and partly takes issue with an earlier article of mine on the same topic. The disagreement between us might seem to be on a small point, and yet I think it will tum out that this point has considerable significance for interpreting and understanding Kant's ethical theory. I wish here to explain the issues, and defend my own earlier account.
What Is Wrong With Kant’S Four Examples, Nelson T. Potter Jr.
What Is Wrong With Kant’S Four Examples, Nelson T. Potter Jr.
Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications
Kant gives four examples to illustrate the application of the categorical imperative immediately after introducing its “universal law” formulation in Chapter Two his Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals. These examples have been much discussed to gain an understanding of how the categorical imperative applies to derive specific duties. It is argued that the discussions found in these examples do not accord well with Kant’s fuller account of that application in his later work The Metaphysics of Morals. That [later] work has quite different, sometimes better, arguments for the same moral conclusions, and never mentions the argument against …

Edmund Husserl's Crisis : A Critique Of Modernity And A Phenomenology Of History, John Cords
Edmund Husserl's Crisis : A Critique Of Modernity And A Phenomenology Of History, John Cords
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
This thesis is an explication and analysis of Edmund Husserl's phenomenology as he presents it is his last work, The Crisis. I do a page-by-page reading of this work and explain such topics as what the crisis itself actually is, how it came about, and what Husserl sees as a way out of this crisis. This involves, for Husserl, an analysis of modernity as arising from the thought of Descartes and the physical science of Galileo. Within this, the rapid development of technology and the theoretical science is explained and interpreted. Husserl sees these great advancements as giving rise to …
Plato's Divided Line And A Mythical Mode Of Knowledge, Dorothy Hageman
Plato's Divided Line And A Mythical Mode Of Knowledge, Dorothy Hageman
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
My thesis is a discussion of Plato's divided line with a special concentration on the fourth level of knowledge. First, the discussion centers on gaining an understanding of the divided line and what Plato says about the method of attaining fourth level knowledge. Second, I show the four levels of the line in two of Plato's dialogues, the Republic and the Phaedrus. The first three levels match the description of them that Plato gives in the divided line, but instead of finding what Plato describes for the fourth level we find a myth. Finally, I discuss how the myth takes …
Nietzsche And Daly: Sparks Of Friendship A Study Of Nietzschean Thought In Daly's Early Works, Pete Costello
Nietzsche And Daly: Sparks Of Friendship A Study Of Nietzschean Thought In Daly's Early Works, Pete Costello
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
This thesis studied the possible Nietzschean influences upon or parallels within the early works of Mary Daly, radical feminist philosopher. To this end, the thesis first tried encapsulate Nietzschean thought in the discussion of the eternal recurrence, the will-to-power and self-overcoming. Then it proceeded to discuss Mary Daly's self-described project of moving beyond the patriarchal structures of the Catholic church and society as a whole. And finally, while it avoided questions of Nietzsche's alleged misogyny, this study outlined possible points of light between a particular feminist project and the ""lasting"" value of Nietzschean philosophy. The end result was not an …

Rethinking Reverence For Life, Mike W. Martin
Rethinking Reverence For Life, Mike W. Martin
Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research
Albert Schweitzer’s ethics of reverence for life is more complex and interesting than first appears. It contains themes relevant to contemporary environmental ethics, including a virtue-ethics approach that emphasizes personal responsibility and tolerance, empathy for living organisms, and the fundamental unity of life. Not surprising, then, Schweitzer has recently been acknowledged for pioneering a biocentric (life-centered) ethical theory.
At the same time, Schweitzer’s ethic has four unpalatable features: pantheism, anthropomorphism, excessive subjectivity, and guilt mongering. I trace these features to the metaphysical framework in which Schweitzer develops his ideal of reverence for life. I also show how the framework can …

(1993) The Growth Of Self-Esteem Within A Community Of Inquiry, Philip C. Guin
(1993) The Growth Of Self-Esteem Within A Community Of Inquiry, Philip C. Guin
Collected Papers of Philip C. Guin
Feeling good about oneself is, today, a fashionable way of describing self-esteem. Collections of more or less discrete feeling states, whether of happiness, confidence, competence, success, well-being and others, supposedly add up to feeling good about oneself. Accordingly, a villain and a saint might implausibly find themselves in company, as belonging to the class of those enjoying self-esteem. That both may be victims of self-deception, pathological cases, is irrelevant, for to the extent that self-esteem is tied to feeling states, virtually anyone may be a candidate. What makes this idea of self-esteem slippery is that one may possess it irrespective …
(1993) The Knife [Philosophical Story And Exercises], Philip C. Guin
(1993) The Knife [Philosophical Story And Exercises], Philip C. Guin
Collected Papers of Philip C. Guin
Carl never planned to steal the knife. He'd gone to Beecham's Hardware, first thing in the morning, to buy a can of paint, in order to touch up the boards of his tree house. But the color he wanted was in the storage room, and as Mr. Beechman went to fetch the desired color, leaving him alone in the store, Carl's attention strayed to the merchandise displays.
