Human Vs. Transhuman: Act One, Cecilia Suhr

This work investigates the conflict between human and transhuman; to that end, the performance employs visual representations of human and transhuman interaction. The music and visual realms interact in real time to enhance the immersive experience of understanding the tension between machines and humans. Voice improvisation also interacts with live processing to create a unique sonic landscape. Overall, this is a multimedia, experimental contemporary performance at the intersection of technology and acoustic music.

In Consort Yu for voice and live electronics, the integration of hand gestures and the use of Leap Motion holds profound significance in presenting Peking Opera. Unlike modern acting conventions, Peking Opera performers rely heavily on hand gestures to convey emotion and narrative. With limited body movements, gestures such as the iconic "Lotus Finger" become essential tools for expression. These nuanced gestures convey a wide range of emotions and intentions, enriching the storytelling experience.

Approached at a recent summer camp about composing music for a “dreamy” choreography, it became a work that synthesizes the sounds of our environment, the subconscious of sleep, the nostalgia of a cleaner world, and the hope of a better future.

As a Colorado State's Open Educational Resources (OER) funding award recipient, I will present the application of an OER approach in teaching music technology, utilizing free and/or open-source materials, tools, and textbooks/publications. Drawing on two courses I have successfully taught using this methodology, I will highlight practical implementation strategies and their impact. Furthermore, I will introduce national OER funding resources and guide the application process. I will enable music educators to adopt this approach in their teaching practices, enhance their scholarly publications, and secure funding support for academic initiatives.

This article argues that artificial intelligence is best understood as a tool in continuity with earlier technologies like digital cameras, non-linear editing, MIDI, and desktop publishing, rather than as a magical threat that will erase creativity or employment. Drawing on historical shifts from film to digital video, manual paste‑up to graphic design software, and acoustic instruments to synthesizers, the author shows that new tools disrupt workflows and certain jobs, yet ultimately broaden access and generate new creative opportunities. An anecdotal interpretation of Martin McDonagh’s titular play The Pillowman (2003), Rego addresses the story of the Pillowman through her father’s depression. Russian ballet has had a significant influence on this dance form since at least the nineteenth century. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky had an especially pivotal role, writing works that placed increasing emphasis on the artistic importance of music in addition to the choreography. A study of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake exemplifies his new emphasis on music and the evolution of ballet in the late nineteenth century. My research surveys the early history of ballet and provides a brief biography of Tchaikovsky. Teachers often have a profound influence on their students. The influence of Giovanni Gabrieli on the music of his student Heinrich Schütz is particularly evident: Gabrieli and Schütz’s pieces are so similar that a listener may observe parallels even without the use of scores. The use of specific melodic and rhythmic patterns during cadences and the use of echoing phrases by both composers strongly suggest a musical link between them. Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine – Grant them eternal rest, Lord. These five words make up one of the most well-known texts in the classical music canon: the Requiem Mass. Built on foundations laid by church composers such as Machaut, Dufay, and Palestrina, eighteenth and nineteenth century giants like Mozart, Berlioz, Verdi, and Brahms popularized the Requiem setting as a concert work. The twentieth and twenty-first centuries have seen compositions by Benjamin Britten, Gabriela Frank, and others, which include narrative elements in conjunction with the traditional Latin texts. While commercially released songs today sound very different from those of the Middle Ages, the 1500s, the 1800s, or even the 20th century, popular and traditional songs do have common traits across time. My research explores common elements that have been used by songwriters for centuries—recurring text themes and durable melodic and lyric forms based on repetition and contrast. I will use audio, score, and text examples to demonstrate close similarities among selected songs that at first may appear very different.
