A Study Of Mignon's Lied In Selected Settings, Robert E. Norton Aug 1970

A Study Of Mignon's Lied In Selected Settings, Robert E. Norton

Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this study is the various treatments given by composers to a twelve line poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The text is the common factor over which the differences of approach and treatment are laid by composers in compositions which range in time of initial publication from 1796 to 1888. The condition of the Lied immediately prior to the publication of the first of the settings is taken as the starting point, since all of the chosen settings may be classified as Lieder. The composers whose works are discussed are Karl F. Zelter, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz …

Piano Group Instruction Versus Individual Instruction, Renate L. Meyer

Ornamentation Of Italian Vocal Music Of The Eighteenth Century According To Pietro Francesco Tosi And Giovanni Battista Mancini, Beverly Ann Brandon Aug 1970

Ornamentation Of Italian Vocal Music Of The Eighteenth Century According To Pietro Francesco Tosi And Giovanni Battista Mancini, Beverly Ann Brandon

Theses and Dissertations

The acclaim and recognition attributed to the musical performers of the eighteenth century are reflected in the title Bel Canto ascribed to this period. The contemporary musical scene reveals performances attempting to perpetuate the virtuosity of the performers of this period and to recapture their style. Unfortunately, the aura of legend and mystery surrounding the performance of music of this period frequently leads to confusion and frustration of both teacher and performer rather than to understanding. This study addresses itself to that problem.

Tosi and Mancini were active participants in this period and their theory, technique of performance, and pedagogical …

The Preparation Of A Graduate Eb Alto Saxophone Recital, Thomas G. Barber

Stylistic Characteristics Of Randall Thompson's Choral Music, Robert Hugh Creigh Jul 1970

Stylistic Characteristics Of Randall Thompson's Choral Music, Robert Hugh Creigh

All Master's Theses

Randall Thompson's choral music, widely performed by professional groups, colleges, and choirs from public schools, establishes this composer as one of the foremost in contemporary music. In view of such popularity, it would seem that choral directors should more fully acquaint themselves with some of the idiomatic characteristics of his style.

Brahms' Vier Ernste Gesange, Moses Turner Jul 1970

Brahms' Vier Ernste Gesange, Moses Turner

All Master's Theses

An investigation into the style characteristics of Vier Ernste Gesange should help one to better interpret and perform the composition. Inasmuch as this cycle is one of Brahms' most introspective compositions, a study of this work would seem to have value for any singer.
