Hemispheric Asymmetries In Faculty And Student Musicians And Nonmusicians During Melody Recognition Tasks, Mark T. Wagner

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Cu,rrent research has suggested that musical stimuli are processed in the right hemisphere except in musicians, in whom there is an increased involvement of the left hemisphere. The present study hypothesized that the more musical training persons receive, the 1 more they will rely on an analytic/left hemispheric processing strategy. The subjects were 10 faculty and 10 student nonmusicians, and 10 faculty and 10 student musicians. All subjects listened to a series of melodies (some recurring and some not) and excerpts (some real and some fake) in one ear and to a different series of melodies in the other ear. …

Research And Development Of A Music-Movement Syllabus For Gymnasts And Gymnastic Coaches, Pauline Mcmillan Upjohn

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Personal participation in floor exercise choreography and performance, observation of performances by other gymnasts, and conversations 'With other; coaches, and gymnasts· have intensified the author's awareness of a widespread lack of knowledge and understanding about the interpretation and use of music in floor exercise. When choreographing optional floor exercise routines, coaches and gymnasts have difficulty selecting appropriate music, interpreting the music, and choreographing routines to complement the music. Even after routines are finally developed, many of them lack style, originality, amplitude, flow, precision of rhythm and execution, and expressiveness. Many of these qualities are also lacking in the performance of …

An Analytical Study Of Hans Werner Henze's Fifth Symphony, Belinda Gascon Jan 1980

An Analytical Study Of Hans Werner Henze's Fifth Symphony, Belinda Gascon

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to present a systematic view of Henze’s stylistic characteristics in areas of form, melodic material and series, rhythm and meter, harmony, texture, and orchestration. The wide range of style exhibited by Henze will be brought to light in this study. Mention of certain stylistic traits in common with other well-known composers, such as Schoenberg, Webern, Stravinsky, and Bartok will be made. Finally, the thesis will show that Henze does not adhere to any strict principle of music composition but allows rather his own innate musical sense and desire for expression to guide him.

It is this sourcebook that the present study has endeavored to provide.

Weinen, Hagen [I.E. Klagen] Organ Transcription By Franz Liszt Arranged For Band, Richard Wayne Guidry

Music ETDs

Written for the piano in 1862, "Weiner Hagen" variations were transcribed in 1863 for organ by Franz Liszt. The transcription is really a large fantasia in the key of F minor that consists of groups of variations, all of which are based on two closely related themes. This arrangement for symphonic band was written for the intended use of any university or good high school level organization. There are many exposed solos and other sections and in various places, extreme ranges of instruments are realized. The arrangement imitates the sound achieved by a large church organ and this fact must …
