Schoenberg's Moses And Aron; A Logical Succesor To Nineteenth-Century Opera?, Steven Neil Tyler Jan 1985

Schoenberg's Moses And Aron; A Logical Succesor To Nineteenth-Century Opera?, Steven Neil Tyler

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Schoenberg's Moses and Aron has been called the most important product of his musical maturity, implying that many of his theoretical, musical, philosophical, and spiritual ideas, both public and personal, can be found in this unique work. The work does not fit neatly into any prescribed category that has come before it or after it. It is possible, however, to trace the development of the work from Schoenberg's own preceding compositions, which in many cases provide the roots of ideas more fully developed in Moses and Aron. Among its predecessors in the opera literature though, it remains unique. The reasons …

Master's Piano Recital, Lixun Zhong Jan 1985

Master's Piano Recital, Lixun Zhong

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In 1722, Bach completed his first volume of twenty-four preludes and fugues in all the major and minor keys in chromatic order, entitled "Das Wohltemperierte Clavier" (The Well-Tempered Clavier). In 1742, he finished a second series of these works which became known as "Das Wohltemperierte Clavier, Book II." The preludes in Book I display a free, nearly improvisatory style, not bound to any set form. In Book II, Bach chose various standard keyboard structures as a basis for the preludes, with the result that they exemplify many late Baroque keyboard forms and evidence an astounding diversity of styles and moods. …

Conducting Recital, John Alston

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The development of sacred German baroque music is definitively illustrated in the works of its two greatest masters, Heinrich Schutz (1585-1672) and Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Schutz initiated the baroque movement in Germany when he infused the old polyphonic German style with elements of the Italian stile moderno and Venetian cori spezzati. The union of these styles subsequently became the predominant feature of German baroque music that reached its zenith in the works of J.S. Bach. The compositions on this recital, Schutz's Die sieben Worte Jesu Christi am Kreuz and Bach's Herr Gott, dich loben wir, represent two important musical …
