From Classical To Contemporary: Popular Music's Role In Shaping Opera And Vocal Training, Craig Allen

This dissertation advocates for the integration of contemporary popular music into classical voice education, addressing the evolving landscape of the performing arts. As the boundary between classical and popular music fades, incorporating popular elements into traditional opera training equips performers for modern industry demands.

The first chapter offers a historical analysis, tracing opera’s origins from the late 16th century and showing how popular music influenced its development. Composers incorporated folk melodies and dance rhythms into early opera, setting a precedent for blending styles. Contemporary operas, such as Nkeiru Okoye’s Harriet Tubman and Nmon Ford’s House of Orfeus, continue this tradition, …

One of the most rapidly evolving musical genres of the 21st century is interactive electroacoustic chamber music. This is primarily due to the ongoing developments in creative technology that have increased both the idiom's technical accessibility and its potential for artistic expression. In particular, modern modular synthesizers enable electroacoustic musicians to transform the physical characteristics of sound with an extremely fine level of control. ABSTRACT Hungarian composer György Ligeti (1923–2006) is renowned as one of the most significant composers of the twentieth century. Musicians around the world have admired his innovative musical language. “Through the 1950s and 1960s, he went from composing in the style of his countryman Béla Bartók to working at the cutting edge of the Western European avant-garde.” His folk elements and avant-garde compositional techniques expanded through various genres, including orchestral, chamber, and keyboard compositions. Securing Memorization In Piano Performance With Continuous Audiation, Jie He

The study explores how incorporating continuous audiation, a concept introduced by pianist and educator Sarah Croom-Hatch, can be used as a strategy to improve pianists’ music memorization abilities and relief performance-related stress. The study presents a four-stage memorization process that emphasizes preparation, early, middle, and late stages. By integrating aural, kinesthetic, analytical, and visual memory with continuous audiation during the four-stage memorization process, pianists can develop a cohesive and secure “sound stream” that significantly enhances their memory system. The purpose of this multiple case study was to discover the experiences of middle school music directors in providing multicultural music performance experiences for students in South Carolina. The theory guiding this study was Cultural-Historical Activity Theory as it allowed for the examination of tools used for teaching and learning. A qualitative multiple case study design allowed for the collection of data from four purposefully selected middle schools in South Carolina. Pregnancy is a transformative journey for women, but amidst the excitement and anticipation that most women experience, pregnancy often raises stress levels to profound heights for various reasons, which may include hormonal fluctuations, physical discomforts, concerns about the baby’s health, financial pressures, relationship changes, fear of labor and birth, life adjustments, and societal expectations. The purpose of this qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological study was to examine how music interventions impacted stress levels during pregnancy. This two-week study employed an in-person group experiment involving pregnant women. Benefit concerts have been used as a fundraising method for urgent issues for centuries, beginning in 1749 with concerts put on by George Handel. The first modern benefit concert was the Concert for Bangladesh in 1971, which proved that these concerts could raise large amounts of money for their cause. Live Aid was put on by Bob Geldof in 1985 Live Aid in response to the famine in Ethiopia. Self-Regulated Learning Perceptions Of Music Education Students, Edmund Strominger

I explored the self-regulated learning (SRL) perceptions and beliefs of pre-service music teachers in the United States. Through a quantitative survey, I investigated participants' SRL skills, their beliefs about students' SRL, and how these factors varied across gender, year in program, and primary area.

Pre-service music teachers possess high levels of SRL, particularly in motivation. However, their beliefs about SRL varied, with some believing it is crucial for student achievement while others downplayed its importance. Gender differences were observed, with female participants reporting lower learning dependency. Year in program and primary area had limited impact on SRL skills and beliefs. …
