Perceptions Of Rape In Marriage And Acquaintance Relationships, Sandra Galben
Perceptions Of Rape In Marriage And Acquaintance Relationships, Sandra Galben
Whittier Scholars Program
This project is a paper that reviews the perceptions that individuals place on rape in marriage and acquaintance relationships. This paper discusses the rape myths and stereotypical beliefs of rape in marriage and acquaintance relationships in comparison to public knowledge about stranger rape incidence. This paper continues to discuss the types of aggression and control used in raping women and the role that suggestive vs. non-suggestive clothing plays on the perception for justification in forcing a woman to have sex against their will. The social scene is also discusses in probability that sex is obtained and rated more justifiable in …
Ayn Rand, Female Misogynist: A Study Of Androgyny In Atlas Shrugged, Sara Kristin Parker
Ayn Rand, Female Misogynist: A Study Of Androgyny In Atlas Shrugged, Sara Kristin Parker
Theses & Honors Papers
Ayn Rand, renowned author of such titles as Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, based many of her heroines on her androgynist views derived from her upbringing and lifestyle. Parker balances her research mostly between Rand’s life and her female protagonist in Atlas Shrugged, Dagny Taggart. Taggart possesses some disdain for a few female characters in the novel, which reflects some of Rand’s lack of female friends due to anti-feministic opinions, the most notable identifying her own sex as weak and submissive. Ayn herself said that she based all of her characters off of a male hero in a children’s …

Aggressive Dating Behavior Among College Students, Felicia D. Flowers
Aggressive Dating Behavior Among College Students, Felicia D. Flowers
Masters Theses
Past studies have revealed that people with traditional gender role views are often involved in dating violence. This study examines both male and female athletes and non-athletes in terms of traditional gender role views and dating violence. Athletes and non-athletes are an important focus because literature is virtually silent on these two populations in terms of dating violence. The researcher surveyed 188 undergraduate students attending Western Michigan University on their attitudes and experiences concerning gender role views, athletic involvement, and history of dating violence, respectively. The results indicate that gender role views and athletic participation appeared to have no significant …

The Red Hawk's Cry, Malaika Anne King
The Red Hawk's Cry, Malaika Anne King
Institute for the Humanities Theses
The Red Hawk's Cry, a collection of twenty-eight poems, is arranged in three sections. "Calling It Back," the first section, consists of eight poems. The title and the poem rely on the concept of resurrecting people, the past, and pieces of the self in order to release them. Several of the poems' subjects are childhood and the personal mythology one weaves growing up. "Dialogue" has nine poems which revolve around relationships with lovers and friends. Though there appears to be a chronological order, the poems are placed more for interplay than for a constructed time line. The final section, "The …
The Effects Of Educational Programs About Rape On The Attitudes Of First Year Urban University Students, Mary Jodine Wolford
The Effects Of Educational Programs About Rape On The Attitudes Of First Year Urban University Students, Mary Jodine Wolford
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education
This study investigated the effects of educational programs on first-year college students' attitudes toward rape. Subjects included 132 male and female (60 and 72, respectively) first-year students in an urban university who were selected randomly for participation. Each participant was assigned randomly to one of four treatment conditions: lecture-style programs, videotape programs, role play programs, or control. Data were collected in three phases: one pretest and two posttests. Attitudes toward rape were measured using the General Attitudes Toward Rape scale. Data were analyzed using Multiple Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA) and Analyses of Covariance (ANCOVA). Findings included no significant differences due …
The Effects Of Gender Of Observers And Victims On Perceptions Of Fairness In Unjust Situations., Laura Leah Josoff
The Effects Of Gender Of Observers And Victims On Perceptions Of Fairness In Unjust Situations., Laura Leah Josoff
Student Work
The effects of gender of observers and victims on perceptions of fairness in unjust situations were investigated. Subjects participated in group sessions and were blocked by gender and then assigned to either the disadvantaged female (read a composition concerning a femal who received poor outcomes) or disadvantaged male (read a composition concerning a male who received poor outcomes) group. After reading the composition, subjects completed a questionnaire which was related to the composition. It was expected that the perception of fairness would depend upon the gender of the perceiver as well as the gender of the victim. Specifically, females would …
Beyond Sugar And Spice: Labeling Female Genitalia, Ethel E. Hellman
Beyond Sugar And Spice: Labeling Female Genitalia, Ethel E. Hellman
Institute for the Humanities Theses
Previous studies have indicated that, in our culture, female genitalia are unlabeled, mis-labeled, and/or negatively labeled, while male genitalia are not.
Twenty-five mothers of young children were interviewed to determine what labels they were teaching their children for sexual body parts. The women later met in small groups to discuss the i r reactions to a soft-sculpture of female genitalia.
The study found that twice as many male children were taught common designations for their own genitalia than were female children. In addition, a greater proportion of female children were given a label for male genitalia, than male children were …
Women's Profiles, Robyn Lynn Cochran
Women's Profiles, Robyn Lynn Cochran
Institute for the Humanities Theses
This creative project chronicles the development of an innovative short-format public radio series called Women's Profiles. I include a range of pertinent materials, including a record of my public radio internship, a grant proposal, and a public radio script. Using a feminist approach, I create a prototype for a radio show in which women subjects/narrators, in a non-hierarchical interview process, share their life experiences in conversation with one ( or more) women interviewers. By incorporating myself as a subject in this document, with work journals and narrative, I give readers an opportunity to appreciate the effort and process involved in …

Social Support Networks Of Gay Men, Raymond M. Berger, David Mallon
Social Support Networks Of Gay Men, Raymond M. Berger, David Mallon
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Although social workers and other helping professionals frequently stress the importance of social networks among gay men, there has been little empirical research to describe these networks. In the present study, the authors analyze data on perceived social support from 166 gay men recruited through gay community groups and social networks. Most gay men were found to have large and diverse social networks. Frequent communication occurs between respondents and network members, most of whom know of respondents' homosexuality. The most frequent and supportive network member was a close friend, and the most common type of support received was emotional. Those …
