Marsha Norman's Ghosts: The Embodiment Of The Past On The Stage, Jennifer Anne Workman
Marsha Norman's Ghosts: The Embodiment Of The Past On The Stage, Jennifer Anne Workman
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study focuses on the role of the ghost figure in Marsha Norman's drama. In order to understand how this ghost figure is unique to her drama, but at the same time has roots in the American theater, I first examine her relationship to her American predecessors and their portrayal of the past in order to later show how the ghost figure is Norman's "device" that she uses to explore the past on the stage. I then attempt to determine her relationship to the current movements with which she is most often associated: new realism and feminism. Because new realism …

The Poetry Of Li-Young Lee: Identity, Androgyny & Feminism, Barbara Qualls
The Poetry Of Li-Young Lee: Identity, Androgyny & Feminism, Barbara Qualls
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In my investigation of Li-Young Lee's poetry, my concerns were two-fold: first, to find evidence of an androgynous quality or ideal; secondly, to demonstrate that ideal as authentically feminist. In the introduction, I investigate the feminist debate about the traditional definition and concept of androgyny, demonstrating the difference between the patriarchal traditional androgyny and the androgynous elements in Lee's poetry.
In Chapter Two, the rose as image and as symbol in Lee's poetry is examined and found to be strikingly androgynous as a symbol. As an image, however, it is more often than not used as a vehicle to describe …

Schubert's Sexuality: A Prescription For Analysis?, Kofi Agawu
Schubert's Sexuality: A Prescription For Analysis?, Kofi Agawu
Publications and Research
What can Schubert's sexuality have to do with the analysis of his music? Four years ago, Maynard Solomon told a compelling story about a leading Austro-Germanic composer, one whose works are unlikely to be excluded from the narrowest definitions of the canon of European music since 1700: he was probably homosexual. Since then, Solomon's tentative argument has hardened into "fact" in the popular musicological imagination, not because additional evidence has become available, but because, in a field starved of headlines and scandal, such a revelation promised a much needed change of critical perspective.

Mr. Chainman, Mr. Mayor, Madam Mayoress, Ladies and Gentlemen, I feel particularly honoured by the invitation to address this distinguished annual gathering, not least because, nowadays at any rate, I have no pretensions to literary scholarship.
Twenty-five years ago I spent a lot of time studying 19th-century novelists. On just such an afternoon as today I sat with my contemporaries arguing the relative merits of these novelists. I have to say that even then George Eliot was not my favourite lady novelist: like any good Yorkshireman I was vociferous in my support of Emily and Charlotte Bronte. But soon after …

Meet Me In The Semiotic Glen: The Evolution Of Gender Communication In The Early Novels Of Robert Penn Warren, Lisa Day
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Sexuality in the early novels of Robert Penn Warren is generally not appealing, intimate, or indicative of love between partners, in part due to the seeming coldness of the female characters and the near-asexuality of the males. However, when both social and personal interactions between the characters are analyzed semiotically according to the theories of Julia Kristeva, a pattern emerges which explains the harshness of the bond between men and women.
Paintings And Drawings In Willa Cather's Prose: A Catalogue Raisonné, Polly P. Duryea
Paintings And Drawings In Willa Cather's Prose: A Catalogue Raisonné, Polly P. Duryea
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Paintings and Drawings in Willa Cather's Prose: A Catalogue Raisonné considers the specific artists and their visual art that greatly influenced Willa Cather's textual compositions. The Catalogue draws upon the author's research of Cather-related art from both American and European libraries and art museums. This art includes painting, drawing, illustration, and tapestry. A detailed and alphabetized list of selected artists and paintings that Cather preferred is provided. The artists are cross-referenced with Cather's own statements about their work or style. Included is biographical data for each artist, the named work of art, and often the date executed, the location then …
A Linguistic Approach To Gender Bias In Student Evaluations Of Teachers, Paula H. Larsen
A Linguistic Approach To Gender Bias In Student Evaluations Of Teachers, Paula H. Larsen
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Few people would deny that discrimination occurs in American society today. In spite of extensive national and local legislation intended to safeguard the rights of every individual, discrimination still exists although, of necessity, it is more insidious, often to the point of invisibility to all but those directly affected by it. Many groups of people experience discrimination in their everyday lives--Blacks, Hispanics, Vietnamese, physically handicapped persons, and the elderly--to name just a few. Another segment of our society, women, also experience discrimination.
