Sodomy And Prostitution: Laws Protecting The “Fabric Of Society”, Nicole A. Hough
Sodomy And Prostitution: Laws Protecting The “Fabric Of Society”, Nicole A. Hough
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
[Excerpt] “Throughout history many people have viewed sodomy and prostitution as moral evils, because sex has often been linked to sin and, therefore, to immorality and guilt. For example, in ancient Hebrew, a sodomite was known as a qadhesh, a male temple prostitute who was associated with heathen deities and impure forms of worship. The female version of qadhesh, qedheshah, is translated directly as prostitute. This archaic view of labeling prostitution and sodomy as impure has been challenged over time, and both topics are still a source of great controversy. […]

Sexuality And Power In Elizabeth Inchbald's A Simple Story., Michelle Martini
Sexuality And Power In Elizabeth Inchbald's A Simple Story., Michelle Martini
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A Simple Story is controversial because of Inchbald's seemingly conflicting statements about women's "proper" education and because the most powerful character in the novel openly defies social norms. Miss Milner, the heroine of the first half of A Simple Story, overtly displays her sexuality and uses it to gain control of men. Her guardian Dorriforth, a Catholic priest, attempts to repress her sexual power. Miss Milner dies in exile, but Inchbald rewards her by saving her from a marriage in which her husband subdues her sexuality. Contrarily, Miss Milner's daughter Matilda represses her sexuality and conforms to eighteenth-century standards …
Is Empathy Gendered And If So, Why? An Approach From Feminist Psychological Anthropology, Claudia Strauss
Is Empathy Gendered And If So, Why? An Approach From Feminist Psychological Anthropology, Claudia Strauss
Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research
Difference feminists have argued that women have special virtues. One such virtue would seem to be empathy, which has three main components: imaginative projection, awareness of the other's emotions, and concern. Empathy is closely related to identification. Psychological research and the author's own study of women's and men's talk about poverty and welfare use in the United States demonstrate women's greater empathic concern. However, some cross-cultural research shows greater sex differences in empathy in the United States than elsewhere. This combination of findings (women tend to demonstrate greater empathic concern, but this typical difference varies cross-culturally) requires a complex biocultural …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2004-12-01, Jean Vermette
Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)
FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Homosexuality In Fushigi Yuugi And Gravitation: An Investigation Into The Cultural Background Of Homosexuality In Japanese Animation, Michele Gibney
Homosexuality In Fushigi Yuugi And Gravitation: An Investigation Into The Cultural Background Of Homosexuality In Japanese Animation, Michele Gibney
Michele Gibney
This paper will delve into the following issues: how the Japanese view homosexual males and how the agency of the reader and/or viewer impacts the depictions of visual displays of intimate behavior by homosexual males. The purpose of this paper will be an attempt to define some sort of answer to each question within the context of the Japanese cultural products of manga and anime. I am going to dissect shifting sexualities as they are represented in two different examples of Japanese anime aimed at slightly differing audience groups. The two shows that I will focus on are: Fushigi Yuugi …

Enjo Kosai: Brand Name Marketing, Michele Gibney
Michele Gibney
Media is a contributing factor in creating a market for the prostitution of minors in Japan today. Media creates an image to which the girls aspire by placing the trendiest items in the hands of music and movie idols who the girls look up to . The drive to then own these trendy, and expensive, products forces the girls into marketing their bodies to strangers. Though in many ways media can be seen as the root of all evil through print and film advertisements, there are some forms of media which work as a caution instead of an encouragement to …

Ono No Komachi: Love And Desire, Michele Gibney
Ono No Komachi: Love And Desire, Michele Gibney
Michele Gibney
The poetry of Ono no Komachi can be read in many lights. The two ways in which I feel its message and context can be best appreciated are through feminine independence and masculine subjection. Ono no Komachi wrote poetry that was evocative of the feminine ideal of longing for a male, but she also wrote poetry which denigrated the need for a woman to rely on a male. Through a self-critical reader analysis of some of her poems, I will show that Komachi’s poetry can be read as comprising a longing for the world of men, and men in particular, …

Review Of Play Like A Man, Win Like A Woman: What Men Know About Success That Women Need To Learn By Gail Evans., Amy Lee Andreassen
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
In her book, Evans, now retired, attempted to define the "unwritten rules" in business. Her premise is that to get ahead in today's corporate environment, women need to understand and "play" by the rules written by men. Evans believes in the bottom line, "When it comes to business, most women are at a disadvantage. We're forced to guess, to improvise, to bluff. That is why so few of us play the game well, and even fewer find it fulfilling" (p. 7).
Women In History - Mary Parker Follett: A Leadership Theorist Ahead Of Her Time, Sandra L. Gaspar
Women In History - Mary Parker Follett: A Leadership Theorist Ahead Of Her Time, Sandra L. Gaspar
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
As a management and leadership voice in the 1920s and 30s, Mary Parker Follett was far ahead of her time (Burnier, 2003; Business Strategy Review, 2002; Harrington, 1999; Smith, 2002). Follett was born in 1868 in Quincy, Massachusetts and was educated at Radcliffe. She began her professional life as a social worker in Roxbury, an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse neighborhood outside Boston. She believed strongly in the power of diversity to enrich society and advocated the grass roots development of community-based organizations and adult education (Smith, 2002, p. 3). After 1908, she became involved in a movement to establish community …

Voices Of Women In The Field-S Is For Survival: Tips For Surviving Administrative Change, Harriet Gould
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
Superintendent tenure averages about five years in any district. With frequent turnover, most women leaders encounter many administrative changes during their careers. As the new super begins leading the district, stress, tension and even anger can develop. Team dynamics may fall apart or never develop. If this is the direction your administrative relationship is headed, these alphabet tips may be a helpful resource for survival.
Pioneer Women In Manitoba: Evidence Of Servant-Leadership, Carolyn Crippen
Pioneer Women In Manitoba: Evidence Of Servant-Leadership, Carolyn Crippen
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
Leadership was characterized as patriarchal and hierarchical during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Pioneer women were often not credited with leadership qualities although many, including school teachers, journalists, suffragettes, healthcare workers, and social activists played an important role in the development of Manitoba communities. This study hypothesized that women were engaged in unrecognized leadership strategies within that contemporary culture. This research explored whether three particular Manitoba pioneer women, Margaret Scott (1855-1931), Margret Benedictsson (1866- 1956), and Jessie McDermott (1870-1950), did, in fact, practice a form of leadership. This leadership form was identified as servant leadership and defined by Robert …

Politicizing Sexuality: An Investigation Of Lgbt Rights And The Ngo Sector In Bosnia-Herzegovina, Rachel Kathryn Mercer
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This research was done as a part of the independent study component of a study abroad program in the Balkans through the School for International Training. During the program, I visited several cities throughout the region, but I chose to be based in Sarajevo for the last month and the time frame of this project. Initially, my independent study project proposal focused on the issue of gender and how people in Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH) understand it both politically and socially. I wanted to study the relationship between women’s non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the new NGO that is working on behalf of …

Chasing A Gendered Agenda: Collaboration And Team Teaching In Higher Education, Dana Christman, Barbara N. Martin, William W. Lockwood
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
This case study sought to characterize and give voice to women faculty working in collaboration and team teaching with male faculty in a higher education setting. The experiences of the women, as well as how they made sense of their experiences are presented. Then, cast against the framework of Feminist Phase Theory, particular attention is paid to the structure, climate, and culture of the work experience. The significance of the study is found in the multiple realities of women faculty members' experiences, and in the suggestions provided for improving the chances of success for female and male faculty to collaboratively …

Seeking Coherence And Integrity: Personal And Professional Demands And Expectations Of Senior Women Professors, Florence A. Hamrick, Mimi Benjamin
Seeking Coherence And Integrity: Personal And Professional Demands And Expectations Of Senior Women Professors, Florence A. Hamrick, Mimi Benjamin
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
This study of 26 senior women professors at a large research university suggests that, while their negotiation of professional and personal commitments involved calculated balancing acts and strategies, they primarily described searches for integrity and coherence in life. More effective personal management strategies, modified and more realistic expectations, and a refusal to dwell on past decisions were among the themes identified. Respondents described an almost uniform and longstanding self-sufficiency and acknowledged having more control over aspects of their work, lives, and time. However, for many, time was also increasingly spent on some level of attention to health, and retirement preparation.
Feminism, Law, And Public Policy: Family Feuds And Taxing Times, Susan B. Boyd, Claire F. L. Young
Feminism, Law, And Public Policy: Family Feuds And Taxing Times, Susan B. Boyd, Claire F. L. Young
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
This article offers a retrospective analysis of feminist research on tax and family law and developments in these fields since the early 1980s. We identify the sometimes contradictory trends-both in legislation and in case law-that raise questions about the influence that feminist research has had on these areas of law. We then flag some ongoing challenges confronting feminists engaged in law reform efforts. Some common themes will emerge, but notable differences are also evident in the ways that feminist thought has played out in tax and family law.
