When one reads many of the long narrative poems of Robinson Jeffers, one wonders at the characters who act out their lives against a backdrop of the contemporary California coastal region. The characters live isolated lives as ranchers, farmers, and farm women; they go about the business of eking out an existence, of cultivating their land, of caring for their livestock. Often, they commit horrible, unnatural acts and always, they or their families are involved in episodes which result in death or injury. Adonais, the elegy on Keats, is regarded by common consent as one of Shelley's two or three greatest poems and one of the greatest elegies in the English language. This current estimate approximates, if it does not confirm, the self judgement of a writer who by 1840 'had been clearly recognized as one of England's half-dozen greatest poets.'

The literary interest in astrology which had been gradually increasing during the fourteenth century in England, culminated in the works of Geoffrey Chaucer and John Gower. It is not surprising that these two poets have used astrology very extensively in writing stories for their medieval audiences since the average man in the Middles Ages believed that life depended upon the influences of the seven planets in their positions in the zodiac. This thesis springs from an interest in Henry James' exploration of the situations which face his characters and of the responses which his characters make to those situations. Viewing the situations, one sees that in general two possibilities may result: The character concerned may go on to a fuller development of his spiritual qualities, or he may become keyed to a value much lower than his spiritual capacity. In either case the ultimate responsibility for the individual's action or attitude rests with himself.

In this thesis I hope to present a picture of the effect the life of Edgar Allan Poe had upon his writing. Poe was and still is a controversial figure.
