I have little of that Dionysian faith which supposes that there are ways of "breaking through” to some ideal reality beyond the limits of the individual skin. We are all prisoners in individual cages of bones. It is difficult to even tap out a message to the people who have "known" us for years, and to communicate with strangers is a near impossibility. Yet it is one of poetry functions to attempt just that, for no poet worth his salt can, like Ivan Ivanich of Chekhov's "Gooseberries," murmur, "God forgive us sinners" and go to sleep.

The method I have followed in writing this dissertation has been to examine critically in chronological order those poems which in my judgment most significantly reveal the different characteristics of Conrad Aiken’s poetry. The method of critical examination has been empirical. The poems have been read and studied without reference to a strict literary theory. Those qualities which are present in Aiken’s poetry have been stated and then usually supported with quotations.

The fourteenth-century alliterative, metrical romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is one or the most brilliant examples or medieval verso. In spite of persistent study, scholars have been unable to identify the poet, but the genius of the man is easily realized. The Gawain poet, as he must be called, combines brilliant realism with the fabulous, elements of the Christian ideal with pagan folklore, as the nuances of mood balance on the exactness of wording and description.

Henrik Ibsen And Thomas Hardy : A Sociological Comparison, Garland Karr Linkous Jr.

Although much has been written about the plays of Henrik Ibsen and the novels of Thomas Hardy, there have been no notable comparisons of the works of the two men, perhaps because they wrote in the two different media. Another possible explanation is the fact that Ibsen is universally regarded as the father of modern drama, but Hardy's status-whether he is the last Victorian novelist or the first modern one-is disputed. It is the purpose of this paper to demonstrate, by comparison, that Hardy should very definitely be classed with the modern, realistic writers.

Explores how female sovereignty in the Wife of Bath's Prologue and Tale results in "the subservience of the class function to the bourgeois ethic which the Wife represents," indicating parallels in Genesis. Alison controls the merchant class in her first three marriages; the clergy in her marriage to Jankyn. In the Wife of Bath, she subordinates the aristocratic King Arthur and the knight to female control.
