An Exploratory Study Of The American Middle-Class Moral And Ethical Values Found In The John Newbery Medal Books., Heath Ward Lowry

It was the purpose of this study to collect data concerning the presence of that content in the Newbery Medal Award winning books which may influence children’s learning of American middle-class moral and ethical values.

The investigator used the process of content analysis to gather data for answering the following questions: (1) Are American middle-class moral and ethical values present in this chosen list of books?; (2) If such value content is present, to what degree of frequency and intensity has it been found?; (3) What variations, if any, can be measured in the presence, frequency, and intensity of these …

The women in the writings of William Faulkner have not captured the attention of readers or critics in the way that the male characters have. A close examination of the criticism of Faulkner' s writings reveals that little special attention has been paid to the literary treatment of the women per se. The women have usually been treated in connection with other themes.

The Shift In Focus From The Group To The Individual In The Later Novels Of John Steinbeck, Sandra Lee Gabel

John Steinbeck demonstrates a shift from the group hero, in some of his earlier novels, to the individual hero in his later novels. It is evident that in East of Eden and The Winter of Our Discontent Steinbeck is more concerned with the individual human being than he was in such earlier novels as Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath. A contrast with two novels which fall in an earlier period, 1940 and before, will clarify the development of the individual man as hero in Steinbeck's later novels. Despite the great number of published works that deal with English prosody or the more restricted subject of versification, there is a noticeable scarcity of studies that describe the practices of individual poets. One of the more apparent reasons for the meager number of versification studies is the instability of the basic criteria by which a poem is examined. Prosodists quite simply find it difficult to establish concrete principles of scansion that are acceptable to all other prosodists.
