Howells' Travel Writing:Theory And Practice., Jeames L. Dean May 1968

Howells' Travel Writing:Theory And Practice., Jeames L. Dean

English Language and Literature ETDs

W. D. Howell’s travel books and reviews of travel books have received limited critical attention. Yet he shows himself a fine artist and critic. Howells reviewed many travel books during his years with the Atlantic Monthly, 1866-1881, and became increasingly aware of the demands of the genre. Among the issues he discusses those treating vision, point of view, appropriate use of humor, choice of material, and the value of facts and generalizations are the most significant. The eye which sees clearly, he suggests, has no need of new and fresh material; the freshness must be within. The artist should record …

Aspen Conversations, Richard Lee Van Der Voort May 1968

Aspen Conversations, Richard Lee Van Der Voort

English Language and Literature ETDs

Ultimately, it is for the reader to interpret and judge a poet's poem. And in much the same way the poet; after the impulse that produced the poem has diminished, must read as any other beholder of a public work. While in the process of composition, particularly during revision, however, the poet may be quite conscious of what he intends and the techniques he employs. But his discovery of the poem as it comes out of him, I am certain, is the larger part of the act of creation. Yet there must be some, to varying degrees, conscious control, and …

Love And Self-Realization In The Fiction Of William Dean Howells, David Lowell Frazier May 1968

Love And Self-Realization In The Fiction Of William Dean Howells, David Lowell Frazier

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation proposes that the quest for self-realization in love is an essential meaning in most of Howells' novels and that his elaboration of the theme through them makes a main interpretation of life. It suggests that the workings of the theme must be understood for appreciation of his individual works and whole accomplishment. The first chapter surveys his books to show that his prevalent story is the love story and that it usually concerns his characters' quests for fulfillment. The survey follows his development from his initial affirmation of romantic love, through his qualified acceptances and denials of it …

Samuel Johnson's Critical Principles:A Chronological Study., Shirley Ann Johnston May 1968

Samuel Johnson's Critical Principles:A Chronological Study., Shirley Ann Johnston

English Language and Literature ETDs

The Victorian dismissal of Samuel Johnson as a narrow, orthodox nee-classical critic is no longer considered valid by Johnsonians. But there is little agreement on what were Johnson's basic principles, and he often is considered inconsistent. Some of his controversial judgments are misunderstood, and his general critical position misrepresented, because distinctions are not made between his carefully weighed judgments written for publication and offhand conversational opinions handed down by Boswell and others. Moreover, Johnson's criticism commonly is represented by popular passages from select pieces of criticism, intermixed without regard for circumstances or time of composition, and sometimes taken from context. …

Virginia Woolf:Post-Impressionist Novelist., Hershey Julien May 1968

Virginia Woolf:Post-Impressionist Novelist., Hershey Julien

English Language and Literature ETDs

It is the thesis of this study that Virginia Woolf' s experiments as a novelist involve to a significant degree an attempt to apply to the art of fiction the aesthetic theories of Post-Impressionism, especially as they were articulated by Roger Fry (1866-1934) in the early years of the twentieth century.

Court Satire In The Dramas Of John Webster, Thomas Middleton, And John Marston, Viva Bentley Fisk May 1968

Court Satire In The Dramas Of John Webster, Thomas Middleton, And John Marston, Viva Bentley Fisk

English Language and Literature ETDs

Modern historians have agreed with Seventeenth Century writers that the most significant problem of Jacobean government was the conflict of the King’s Prerogative with the commonly accepted rights of English citizens. As everyone knows, the struggle, which began during the last decade of Elizabeth’s reign was not resolved and led finally under Charles to the Civil War. Observers of the time and some modern researchers have expressed the view that the people were on the defensive, trying to protect their native rights from overreaching monarchs. Many modern historians, however, believe that the Stuart kings--without a standing army, a paid beaurocracy, …

Portraits Of The Artist, Frances Santoro May 1968

Portraits Of The Artist, Frances Santoro

Student Scholarship

This study examines the artistic evolution of the character Stephen Dedalus across three of James Joyce's major works, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses, and Exiles. The progression is analyzed through the framework of Stephen’s own aesthetic theory, which categorizes art into three successive forms: the lyrical, the epical, and the dramatic. Each stage of development corresponds to the artist's shifting relationship with his subject matter and his audience.

In A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, the narrative represents the lyrical form, characterized by an instant of emotion and a subjective, egocentric focus. …

The Image Of The Jew In James Joyce's Ulysses, Phyllis Joyce Cohen Levy Apr 1968

The Image Of The Jew In James Joyce's Ulysses, Phyllis Joyce Cohen Levy

Master's Theses

Since the beginning of English literature, the Jew has been portrayed as a villain. Edgar Rosenberg and Montague Frank Madder most affirmed the conviction in each of their studies of the Jew in English literature. However, the conclusion that the Jew is still portrayed as a villain is invalid because the image has changed. It is my intention to examine this change, focusing particularly on the character of Leopold Bloom in James Joyce 's Ulysses.

John Gay's Comic View Of Society, Bruce Frederick Hann Feb 1968

John Gay's Comic View Of Society, Bruce Frederick Hann

English Language and Literature ETDs

INTRODUCTION

Up to 1963 Sven Armens was the only student of Gay who had considered the intention behind Gay's work as a whole. Unfortunately Armens saw Gay's poetry almost exclusively as autobiographical and moral, reflecting the nostalgia of a country boy condemned to life in the city but setting forth in his poetry country life as ideal; city life as less than ideal at best, vicious at worst. Armens’ emphasis on Gay's nostalgia for the country is too strong, 1f not completely mistaken. I have undertaken, therefore, an exploration of Gay’ s general attitude toward his world with special attention …
