The Critical Career Of Allen Tate, 1922-1952., Vera Louise Norwood Aug 1968

The Critical Career Of Allen Tate, 1922-1952., Vera Louise Norwood

English Language and Literature ETDs

The thesis of this paper rests on the conviction that Allen Tate's essential contribution to letters, despite his connections with the Southern Fugitive and Agrarian movements, is of lasting national importance. He is a critic who, because he is also a modern poet, recognized and developed a new critical stance which was quite relevant to the concerns of other men of letters of his generation. In order to understand how this stance developed one must understand Tate's own loss of traditional values after World War I. This loss is best expressed in his poetry, but its implications are carried out …

Samuel Daniel: His Importance As A Literary Figure, Ronald Gaffney Aug 1968

Samuel Daniel: His Importance As A Literary Figure, Ronald Gaffney

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

An investigation of the literary conventions and an evaluation of the way they are employed by Daniel will help to provide some indication of his literary importance. To examine the traditional conventions he uses will, to some degree, indicate where Daniel fits into the literary society of the Elizabethan Age. A study of some of his innovations and a few of his distinctive ways of using traditional motifs will help to demonstrate his overall importance to literature.

Edgar Allan Poe's Criticism Of The Novel, James Gage Aug 1968

Edgar Allan Poe's Criticism Of The Novel, James Gage

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Edgar Allan Poe wrote forty-three critical reviews of novels during the period 1_835 to 1848 that he was associated with the various literary journals in the East. And, although his best known critical works concern themselves with the tale and with poetry, his statements regarding the novel are of sufficient quantity to merit scholarly research. Yet investigation of the major bibliographic sources reveals this to be not at all the case. Thus, this thesis snail endeavor to place some substance in the void of scholarship concerning Poe's criticism lf the novel with the hope that this substance might provide ample …

Goticism In Matthew G. Lewis's The Monk & Related Works, Larry Harrel Aug 1968

Goticism In Matthew G. Lewis's The Monk & Related Works, Larry Harrel

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Lewis repeatedly revealed himself to be concerned with effect: in his statement that he desired to increase effect by heightening the color of The Monk and in his statements concerning his goal in The Castle Spectre there is the recurrent theme of desire to horrify. This desire has been shown to grow out of the aesthetic ideal of sublimity which was developed in years preceding The Monk. The implicit defect in this concept is that it may be used to justify sensational works which lack lasting merit, as was largely the case with The Castle Spectre, not …

Milton And Cambridge : A New Look At An Old Attitude, Roy S. Riner Aug 1968

Milton And Cambridge : A New Look At An Old Attitude, Roy S. Riner

Master's Theses

From the insights cleaned from current research into John Milton's years as an undergraduate and a graduate student at Cambridge University, this writer has found an overwhelming amount of material dedicated to pointing out Milton's total lack of affection for that university. For the most part, those statements bearing on Milton's dislike for Cambridge are unequivocal. For example, one scholar has remarked that John Milton departed from the University in 1632 "weary and disguised" with the medieval, unbearable antiquated methods of the place. That same scholar continues with the statement that Milton's attitude toward Cambridge was "uniformly unfriendly" and that …

E.M. Forster’S Short Stories, Joan Meredith Kerns Aug 1968

E.M. Forster’S Short Stories, Joan Meredith Kerns

All Master's Theses

This paper will discuss E. M. Forster's short stories, using George Meredith's theory of the comic spirit and plot as a basis for critical analysis. In addition, it will suggest that some of Forster's characteristic ideas, which may appear in his later novels, occur first, and in developed form, in his short stories.

Great Day. An Edition Of Great Day : The Autobiography Of Emma Speed Sampson, John Letcher Fugate Jul 1968

Great Day. An Edition Of Great Day : The Autobiography Of Emma Speed Sampson, John Letcher Fugate

Master's Theses

Other than a reference to Emma Speed Sampson in a sentence to the editorial in a recent Saturday Evening Post and two informative articles about her by Gay Friddell in the Commonwealth and Lillian F. Trimmer in the Richmond Times Dispatch virtually no criticism has been done on this outstanding Southern local colorist. Although she wrote books in the "Carter Girs" series, the "Molly Brown" series, and the "Campfire Girls" series, the sequence of books for which Emma Speed Sampson will be best remembered is the "Miss Minerva" series, twelves books whose humorous pages reveal the way of life in …

Chaucer's Ecclesiastics In The Canterbury Tales, Helen Lee Coleman Jul 1968

Chaucer's Ecclesiastics In The Canterbury Tales, Helen Lee Coleman

Master's Theses

It is thought that Chaucer began composing The Canterbury Tales as a dramatic whole around 1387. This is his last and by f ar his best known work. In this final. masterpiece Chaucer undertakes the tremendous task or presenting in poetic form a whole society. However, he does not merely explore society in general; he also develops the theme or the individual's relation to the community and the integral part that each person plays in making up the whole. The Canterbury Tales is, as George Lyman Kittredge so aptly puts it, "a micro cosmography" or a little image of a …

The Fable And The Fabulous: The Use Of Traditional Forms In Children's Literature, Ned Samuel Hedges Jun 1968

The Fable And The Fabulous: The Use Of Traditional Forms In Children's Literature, Ned Samuel Hedges

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Because children’s literature is considered to be a development of the past two centuries, it is generally believed that there are differences between children's literature and adult literature. The majority of people who have written extensively about children's literature have been primarily concerned with those differences. I too believe that there are differences between children's literature and adult literature; but those differences seem to me to be neither as extensive nor as significant as has been commonly assumed. What are the differences? Can they be described? Are there also significant similarities between children's literature and adult literature?

I believe that …
