Courtly Love Elements In The Child Ballads: A Study In Origins, Fannie Lewis Jan 1969

Courtly Love Elements In The Child Ballads: A Study In Origins, Fannie Lewis

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The traditional ballad, the genre of the above poetry, has been a subject of much controversy and speculation, especially regarding its origin. The problem of origin is not likely to be solved unless much more evidence is found. Among the many theories are communal authorship, and individual poet; humble and oral origin, and sophisticated and literary origin. Studies of linguistics, of ballad refrain, and of carole continue the attempt to discover ballad genesis. However, a very different approach perhaps can be used to determine the origin of some ballads, particularly the romantic ballads; that approach is to use the courtly …

The taxicab braked to a stop at the end of the paved road which meandered up the narrow valley of Pigeon Roost Creek in the eastern Kentucky mountains.  Sol James sat staring up the rutted unpaved road that wound on up the valley from the end of the hard top.  He ' shook his head in dismay and turned to his lone passenger, David Layne, a university student on his way home. Sol sighed and, in the doing, admitted defeat. "This is the end of the line for me, Dave old boy."

Blood-Knowledge And The Plumed Serpent, Steven Mark Schwartz

Master's Theses

The intent of this paper is to study D. H. Lawrence's theme of blood-knowledge as it is found in a selection of his fictional works. The most outstanding work which concerns itself with this theme is The Plumed Serpent, a novel which centers around the re-birth of the ancient Mexican religion of Quetzalcoatl.

The Significance Of Nicholas Jenkins In Anthony Powell's A Dance To The Music Of Time, Michael George Gaspeny Jan 1969

The Significance Of Nicholas Jenkins In Anthony Powell's A Dance To The Music Of Time, Michael George Gaspeny

Master's Theses

During a time in which scholarly examinations of novels both major and minor abound, it seems remarkable that such an intricate and ambitious series as Anthony Powell' s Dance to the Music of Time has not generated more extensive and thorough critical attention. Resulting in part from the singularity of Powell' s art, this neglect can be attributed primarily to the nature of the series itself. Thus, as Anthony Burgess has pointed out, Powell has undertaken the writing of a roman fleuve. In such a work, of course, the novels are basically uniform in style, structure, and theme, and are …

Evan Harrington : George Meredith's Use Of Comedy As A Corrective To Sentimentality, Joyce Stanley Scott Jan 1969

Evan Harrington : George Meredith's Use Of Comedy As A Corrective To Sentimentality, Joyce Stanley Scott

Master's Theses

Because it leads an individual to increasing loss of perspective, George Meredith considered sentimentality a real tragedy. The deluded sentimentalist convinces himself that all his efforts and attitudes bear him steadily down the road of spiritual progress, when actually he is using his ideals of society as an excuse for willful blindness, a shifting of responsibility, and self-deception. The sentimentalist's primary concern is to cushion himself against hard fact instead of training himself for encountering it, and he accomplishes this by drugging himself against the perception of truth.

Ernest Hemingway's Impressionistic Style., Larry Cole Thompson Jan 1969

Ernest Hemingway's Impressionistic Style., Larry Cole Thompson

Master's Theses

This thesis is in one sense an attempt to explain to what extent, if any, the fluctuations in critical and popular evaluation throughout, and even after, Hemingway's lengthy career are due to his impressionistic style. The purpose and method of this thesis is therefore twofold:

  1. To arrive at a workable definition of Impressionism, and, using this definition, to delineate those portions of Hemingway's work which are written in this manner.
  2. To determine if Impressionism may be used as a critical gauge in assessing Hemingway's fictional works and perhaps explain the aforementioned fluctuations in his work.

Brighton Rock: Growth In Psychological Insight, Sister Catherine Madigan Dc Jan 1969

Brighton Rock: Growth In Psychological Insight, Sister Catherine Madigan Dc

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, presented at Xavier University in 1969, examines Graham Greene's novel "Brighton Rock" as a significant early step in Greene's development of psychologically complex characterization. Madigan argues that the novel represents the first sustained combination of three elements in Greene's fiction: the "thriller" plot structure, the "Catholic element" as a framework of belief opposing his characters' actions, and genuine psychological depth, distinguishing it from both his earlier thrillers and his lighter "entertainments."

The thesis compares "Brighton Rock" to Greene's short story "A Drive in the Country," which shares a similar plot but, due to its brevity and narrative point …

Generation Ebb: A Novella, Charlene M. Eblen Jan 1969

Generation Ebb: A Novella, Charlene M. Eblen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Two things essential for the development of experimental science are the cooperation of many workers and the keeping of careful records of their work. A major problem for the experimental scientists of the seventeenth century was the lack of both cooperative effort and systematic records. The scientific work early in this century was scattered, intermittent, and recorded, if at all, haphazardly. The purpose of this paper is to show how Henry Oldenburg, during his first five years as secretary to the Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge, developed patterns of communication which brought the experimental philosophers together to …

Whitman's Concept Of Brotherhood : His Motivation In Advocating Brotherhood And The Prerequisites For Brotherhood, Frank M. Morgan Jan 1969

Whitman's Concept Of Brotherhood : His Motivation In Advocating Brotherhood And The Prerequisites For Brotherhood, Frank M. Morgan

Honors Theses

There is a cause and effect relationship between brotherhood and almost all other proposals of Whitman. The relation between brotherhood and Whitman's metaphysical beliefs or religion is mroe complicated than a cause and effect one, and deserves more space later. With the understanding that the cause and effect situation works two ways, brotherhood both acting upon and being affected by other elements of Whitman's great plan for mankind, I shall attempt in this paper to explore these relationships from the point of view that chooses for discussion those elements that are necessitites for or impedimetns to the institution of brotherhood.

John Donne : English Master Of Gongorism, Dorothy Gayle Hightower Jan 1969

John Donne : English Master Of Gongorism, Dorothy Gayle Hightower

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The title of this thesis, JOHN DONNE: ENGLISH MASTER OF GONGORISM, may seem perplexing to some, presumptuous to others. However, the purpose of this thesis will be to present evidence, through a textual study of the poetic style of both John Donne (1572-1631) and Don Luis de Göngora (1561-1627), which will verify the assumption that Donne was poetically influenced by Góngora.

The Theory Of Elective Affinities In The Dramatic Love Poems Of Robert Browning, Harry C. Tartt Jan 1969

The Theory Of Elective Affinities In The Dramatic Love Poems Of Robert Browning, Harry C. Tartt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Master of Arts degree in 1969, examines Robert Browning's treatment of romantic love in his dramatic poems through the theoretical lens of elective affinities, which is a concept borrowed from chemistry and first applied to human relationships by Johann Wolfgang Goethe in his 1809 novel Wahlverwandtschaften (Elective Affinities). The study traces the origins of the chemical theory of elective affinities from seventeenth-century analytical chemists including Hermann Boerhaave and Torbern Bergmann through Goethe's literary application of the concept to four lovers whose passions operate as blind, irresistible forces …
