Medical Matters In Shakespeare's Plays, Linda Longstreth Aug 1969

Medical Matters In Shakespeare's Plays, Linda Longstreth

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

An effort is made in this study to consider the important factors in the field of medicine that are repeatedly referred to in Shakespeare's plays: practitioners, diseases and infirmities, drugs and herbs, physiological processes of the body, and mental disturbances and psychological therapy. The purpose is to examine these extensive references to medical matters in the dramatist's comedies, tragedies, and histories and to show his profound knowledge in the field. Special emphasis is placed on the accuracy of his portrayals in depicting the true practice of medicine in the Elizabethan Age and his far-reaching vision in anticipating medical theories of …

The Poetry Of Thomas Merton, Nancy Nelson Aug 1969

The Poetry Of Thomas Merton, Nancy Nelson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

There is a need, then, for a study of Merton's poetry as a whole--a study based not on the poetry as a result of his poetic theory but on the poetry primarily as poetry, and which would include his last three volumes. This paper, therefore, will be a survey of representative samplings from each volume of Merton's poetry, and will take into account the differences and similarities between his early and later periods. It will attempt to discover and illustrate the most significant aspects of the development of Merton's philosophy and poetics, as revealed by the poetry itself and by …

To Hell For A Heavenly Cause: The Re-Emergence Of The Harrowing Of Hell Motif In Twentieth Century Literature, Margaret Shepherd Aug 1969

To Hell For A Heavenly Cause: The Re-Emergence Of The Harrowing Of Hell Motif In Twentieth Century Literature, Margaret Shepherd

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

To define the scope of this study, therefore, Harrowing of Hell imagery will be thought of as those symbols peculiar to the pseudo-biblical story, with redemptive activity and triumph as distinguishing criteria. The hero is a Christ figure who has already achieved a degree of self-mastery. His descent into hell represents an act of redemption for others, with victory as the outcome. This delimitation, it will be seen, is not impossibly restrictive. A survey of contemporary literature indicates that Wasserman's use of the descent motif with redemptive implications is far from an isolated instance. Edward Albee in The Zoo Story …

Themes Of Decay In The Novels Of John Updike, Renae Eaden Aug 1969

Themes Of Decay In The Novels Of John Updike, Renae Eaden

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Although Updike has been recognized as one of the few contemporary writers worthy of serious consideration, critics and reviewers are not in accord about the acclaim that he has received. They cannot agree that Updike has anything worthwhile to say about the fundamental questions basic to contemporary fiction. Updike has been accused of dealing in sentimentalities and trivialities, while touching only slightly problems important to the human condition. Most critics agree that his style is excellent, but some feel that Updike is using this particular skill to cover up the shallowness of his thought. However, throughout Updike's novels major themes …

A Comparative Study Of Existential Attitudes In John Dos Passos’ Three Soldiers And Norman Mailer’S The Naked And The Dead, Vernon Knuckles Jr. Aug 1969

A Comparative Study Of Existential Attitudes In John Dos Passos’ Three Soldiers And Norman Mailer’S The Naked And The Dead, Vernon Knuckles Jr.

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis is devoted primarily to examining existential factors present in Three Soldiers and The Naked and the Dead, but it is evident that naturalism and Marxism make their presence known in both novels. Three Soldiers and The Naked and the Dead suggest through their existential overtones that indeed existentialism is a vital force which is clearly exerting itself in twentieth-century literature.

This study supports the viewpoint of a growing number of modern authors’ works which have concentrated on the individual’s struggle to find meaning and fulfillment in a complex world – a world of nuclear devices, campus unrest, …

A Contrast Of Deofoe's Moll Flanders And Colonel Jack, With Emphasis On The Thematic Substance And Thematic Unity Of Each., William Burchard Cogswell Jul 1969

A Contrast Of Deofoe's Moll Flanders And Colonel Jack, With Emphasis On The Thematic Substance And Thematic Unity Of Each., William Burchard Cogswell

English Language and Literature ETDs

Ian Watt, in his The Rise of the Novel, has stated that, as a writer of fictions, “[Daniel] Defoe created his own personal genre, which stands wholly alone in the history of literature ….” He has assigned Defoe this distinction, it seems, to preserve for Defoe some stature in the history of the novel, for the primary aim of his discussion of Defoe’s art is to show that Defoe did not succeed in writing a novel as the genre is now defined. He has based his conclusion on this “presumption”: that “we place Defoe’s novels in a very different context …

POEM

The Huntsville Literary Association was founded in 1967 to provide a community for writers, readers, and artists through workshops, readings, and educational programs. One of their key contributions is the literary magazine titled POEM which showcases original writings from both established and emerging writers. This issue highlights the work of Jane Ferrell Gibson and Patrick Gratton. It also uses "Lord Byron shaking the dust of England from his shoes," by Max Beerbohm as its cover art.

A Critical Study Of The Seven Major Victorian Pessimistic Poets, Frank W. Childrey Jul 1969

A Critical Study Of The Seven Major Victorian Pessimistic Poets, Frank W. Childrey

Master's Theses

The following thesis is a critical study of seven sig nificant Victorian pessimistic poets. Having as its basis a seminar paper for Dr. Lewis F. Ball in which four of the Victorian pessimists were discussed, the original study was expanded in order to include the remaining three.

In this critical study, the emphasis has been placed mainly upon the themes characteristic of these pessimistic poets, and the poems that I consider to be the best examples of their various attitudes have been incorporated, either partially or in full, into the text of this thesis. Furthermore, though these chapters are not …

The Masque, A Courtly Entertainment, Kenneth Bailey Blanks Jul 1969

The Masque, A Courtly Entertainment, Kenneth Bailey Blanks

Master's Theses

In tho Courts of the Tudors and the Stuarts flourished a form of entertainment known as the masque . This exclusive pastime was characterized by gorgeous costumes, ingenious sets, imaginative scenery, music, dialogue, and dancing. Dancing was the most important element. It is said that "from the beginning to the end of its history, the essence of the masque was the arrival of certain persons visored and disguised to dance a dance or present an offering," often in the form of a compliment to the monarch. Dancing established a close intimacy between the masquers -- the disguised performers in the …

Towards A Theory Of Metaphor, Lee A. Farr Jul 1969

Towards A Theory Of Metaphor, Lee A. Farr

All Master's Theses

Achieving insight through the understanding of a metaphor is not a process of losing one's subjectivity, ego, or selfhood, but is the uniting of that subjectivity, ego, or selfhood with what was thought to be, without insight, an external object. It is an imaginative advancement to the realization that what was thought to be external to ourselves is now part of ourselves. Thus it is a dissolving of the subject-object dichotomy and a unification and fulfilling of ourselves with our environment. It increases not only our understanding of the interrelationships of what we perceive as real but also enlarges our …
