Some Reflections On The Great Divorce Of C.S. Lewis, Owen Barfield Sep 1976

Some Reflections On The Great Divorce Of C.S. Lewis, Owen Barfield

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Praises The Great Divorce because in it the two sides of the author—“the atomically rational Lewis and mythopoeic Lewis—I will not say united, but they do at least join hands.” Cogent argument is combined with “vividly imagined” narrative and descriptive imagery.

Dorothy L. Sayers And The Inklings, Joe R. Christopher Sep 1976

Dorothy L. Sayers And The Inklings, Joe R. Christopher

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Notes known connections to Lewis and Williams on Sayers’s part (through the evidence of letters). Speculates on ways they may have influenced each other. Includes an excerpt from a Sayers letter on the Narnia books.

A Briefing For Briefing: Charles Williams' Descent Into Hell And Doris Lessing's Briefing For A Descent Into Hell, Ellen Cronan Rose Sep 1976

A Briefing For Briefing: Charles Williams' Descent Into Hell And Doris Lessing's Briefing For A Descent Into Hell, Ellen Cronan Rose

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Asserts that “Doris Lessing’s naming of her book and its protagonist was both intentional and ironic, and that it acknowledges her indebtedness to the form of Williams’ fiction and her [...] futile gesture toward the Romantic amalgam of appearance and reality.”

"Surprised By Joy": C.S. Lewis' Changing Attitudes Toward Women, Margaret Hannay

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Presents “those chauvinistic elements which have irritated so many women” who encounter Lewis’s work, and argues that Lewis’s attitude toward women altered in his life and his work as he matured. See also a letter and response in Mythlore #15, p. 27–28, 30.

Anais Nin's Under A Glass Bell : From Interior Fatality To Psychological Motion, John Harty Aug 1976

Anais Nin's Under A Glass Bell : From Interior Fatality To Psychological Motion, John Harty

Master's Theses

Most of the critic ism on Anais Nin has been an overview of her entire work. Under A Glass Bell is included but, to my knowledge, no one has explored each individual story deeply enough since Nin herself recommends Under A Glass Bell as the book to begin with when reading or studying her works. Ibelieve that her recommendation is correct because Under A Glass Bell contains the nucleus of themes which she conc entrates on in all of her works, including the Diaries.

William Dunbar: An Analysis Of His Poetic Development, G. David Beebe Jul 1976

William Dunbar: An Analysis Of His Poetic Development, G. David Beebe

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines the work of William Dunbar, a sixteenth century Scottish poet, in order to demonstrate that he is not, as he is often styled, a Scottish Chaucerian. It makes an analysis of the chronological occurrence of forms and themes in his poetry which indicates that his work can be divided into three periods: (1) an initial period in which his work deals with traditional matter and forms; (2) a second period in which he develops a distinctly personal poetic voice; and (3) a final period in which he perfects this personal voice and then relinquishes it for a …

The Sound And The Fury: An Archetypal Reading, Theresa Lee Pearson Jul 1976

The Sound And The Fury: An Archetypal Reading, Theresa Lee Pearson

English Language and Literature ETDs

Though The Sound and the Fury has received considerable critical attention since its publication in 1929, certain issues have yet to be resolved. Primary among these are the related issues of the novel's unity and of the possibility of an optimistic theme. The theory of archetypes postulated by C. G. Jung provides a model that helps to solve these problems. Archetypes are patterns of human experience though, as Jung insists, they can never be "reduced to a simple formula." However, one can speak of models that parallel the literary experience. The model that parallels this novel is that of an …

Shared Fire: Reciprocity In Contemporary American Indian And Related Literature, Geri Marlane Rhodes Jul 1976

Shared Fire: Reciprocity In Contemporary American Indian And Related Literature, Geri Marlane Rhodes

English Language and Literature ETDs

The dissertation examines contemporary American Indian literature to see how emerging writers interpret the traditional Indian tribal value, reciprocity. While focusing on Southwestern Indian literature, the study views reciprocity as a Pan-Indian value. Defined as interdependence, the dynamics of the web of life, the 'law' that describes the interworkings of relationships, reciprocity is apparent in the treatment of food, kinship, point of view, marriage, space, advice, and prayer ( the key word of each chapter).

In American Indian culture, the web of life is not a static metaphor, but an actual description of what goes on between woman and man, …

A Study Of Re-Writing In The Poetry Of Arthur Hugh Clough, Patrick G. Scott

Samuel Butler’S Way Of All Flesh As A Sociological Novel, David Carter Jul 1976

Samuel Butler’S Way Of All Flesh As A Sociological Novel, David Carter

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

To scholars of Victorian literature, Samuel Butler has always been a rebel who strikes out at society with wide-ranging criticism. After years of studying subjects as varied as music, art, biology, literature, and theology, Butler felt (like many Victorian writers) that he could make valuable social comments with his satires, travelogues, biological studies and one novel.

Critical studies of Butler have tended to treat in broad outline all facets of his life and work. This study, however, examines in depth Butler’s novel The Way of All Flesh, as the focal point of his critical analysis of Victorian society. It treats …

Evaluation And Reader Response Criticism: Values Implicit In Affective Stylistics, Steven J. Mailloux Jul 1976

Evaluation And Reader Response Criticism: Values Implicit In Affective Stylistics, Steven J. Mailloux

English Faculty Works

The reader is the central concern of reader response criticism, especially of the Iiterature-in-the-Reader Approach of Stanley Fish. Fish claims that his Affective Stylistics is only a descriptive method, and he disavows any evaluative potential for its description of the structure of the reader's response. However, on several levels Affective Stylistics contains implicit values: definitional, prescriptive, comparative, and ethical. Therefore, an evaluative tendency is inherent in the method. In fact, an examination of the premises and practice of Affective Stylistics shows that disorientation during the reading process is seen as both a literary and an ethical criterion of evaluation. This …

Views it as “probably true” that he was “hostile to industrialism and technology,” however. Argues that “Lewis’s ecological concern was related to his vision of religious transcendence.”
