Mythcon 14 - Mythic Structures In Tolkien, Lewis, And Williams, The Mythopoeic Society

Mythcon Programs

Welcome to the Mythopoeic Society's 14th annual Conference. This year we have more people attending from greater distances than any previous year, many of which have come to give papers. This will make for an even greater exchange of ideas and variety of perspectives. Whether you are from near or far, I hope you will take time to become better acquainted with the others present. The annual conferences are similar to a family reunion for many, who only see many of their mythopoeic friends this one time a year. I hope for those who are here for the first time …

The George Eliot Fellowship- 19, D.E. Beamish, A. Reader, Graham Handley, Edith Lenton, Margaret Wolfit, Gabreil Woolf

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

When I wrote the last newsletter we had not then had Gabriel Woolf’s prgramme of readings entitled “The Warwichshire Pen”. It was, as always, immensely successful- in its ccontent, its performance (see the Review, p. 50) and also financially. That we make a profit at all is entirely due to the great generosity of those members who sponsor the two performance each year. Without these good friends we would certainly not be able to play at the University of Warwick Arts Centre and we are so grateful for their help and support. “The Warwichshire Pen” is to be repeated in …

Though oft have invitations -- even flatteries -- been addressed to you, how can you now resist the unique recounting of passion between Paris and H-- of T-- told by a certain bold champion of our Society who is as handsome as he is anonymous; or can you refuse an adventurous, bloody tale of pirates, written by a dashing teenager who later became that famous arch communist, Friedrich Engels?

Don Leon, Byron, And Homosexual Law Reform, Louis Crompton Jul 1983

Don Leon, Byron, And Homosexual Law Reform, Louis Crompton

Department of English: Faculty Publications

The origin of the anonymous poem entitled Don Leon, written in the 1830s but known to us only in an edition of 1866, is one of the mysteries of English literary history. The title page describes the work as "A Poem by Lord Byron, Author of Childe Harold, Don Juan, &c., &c. and Forming Part of the Private Journal of His Lordship, Supposed to Have Been Entirely Destroyed by Thos. Moore," but it is less and more than this. Byron had died in 1824 and his memoirs were burned shortly after by a committee of friends and other interested …

Fallen Angels: William Faulkner's Lost Generation, Ron Buchanan May 1983

Fallen Angels: William Faulkner's Lost Generation, Ron Buchanan

Theses & Honors Papers

In his address upon receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature on December 10, 1950, William Faulkner stated that the only topic "worth writing about" is "the problems of the human heart in conflict with itself ."1 Throughout his career, Faulkner attempted to convey this idea; regardless of the actual subject or the characters, this theme weaves itself through the author's works. Even Faulkner's works of the 1920s and early 1930s demonstrate this concern with the psychological and emotional problems of his characters. Among the characters most troubled are the veterans returning home after fighting in Europe during World War I …

Some Measures Of Ulysses, June Sinclair May 1983

Some Measures Of Ulysses, June Sinclair

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Contemporary literary theorists, very much aware of themselves as constituting a break in, and a refutation of, an entire classical metaphysics, are trying to prove that James Joyce, the foremost prose writer of the twentieth century, writing when that classical view was falling from grace and the modern perspective was forcing itself upon the intellectual world, is, in fact, in his work--all works considered as one work--undermining the very tradition which critics consider his foundation. Consequently, the way in which Ulysses and Finnegans Wake are read and valued will be linked to an entire theory of literature.

The body of …
