“Black Coat” Scottish Spies: Clerical Informers In 1820, John Gardner
Studies in Scottish Literature
This essay reviews modern debate about the use of government spies during the Scottish risings of 1819-1820; discusses the reliability of contemporary sources identifying Scottish clergy as government agents (notably Peter Mackenzie's An Exposure of the Spy System Pursued in Glasgow, 1835); turns to poetry from the period by Janet Hamilton and Alexander Rodger that insists that spies were used, including clergymen; and examines evidence of clerical espionage from the National Archives at Kew.

Analysis Of Fantasy Fiction Series Of Sarah J. Maas: A Court Of Thorns And Roses, Raelynn D. Peña
Analysis Of Fantasy Fiction Series Of Sarah J. Maas: A Court Of Thorns And Roses, Raelynn D. Peña
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis offers a feminist interpretation of A Court of Thorns and Roses, a series by Sarah J. Maas. The fantasy fiction series began publication in 2015 and released its companion book in 2018. Protagonist Feyre navigates values about femininity and masculinity, breaking standards, as she develops throughout the series to change the fae and human worlds. Feyre stands up to inequality and helps others, both human and fae, to make peace instead of war. This analysis uncovers the gender roles, literary elements, and fairy tale influences on the series A Court of Thorns and Roses. Prominent symbolism involves masks, …

Containing The Blemmye: Anxiety Towards Congenital Difference In The Old English Wonders Of The East, Jessica L. Carrell
Master's Theses
This thesis aims to illuminate early medieval anxieties about sex, procreation, and congenital physical difference by applying a lens of critical disability theory to the Old English Wonders of the East, primarily as it survives in the eleventh-century manuscript, London, British Library, Cotton MS Tiberius B.v. This thesis focuses on the textual and illustrative representation of one Wonder, the Blemmye—an approximately eight-foot-tall, eight-foot-wide androgynous humanoid, whose eyes and mouth are in their chest and who does not possess a head—as a historic embodiment of what disability meant in relation to the early medieval English worldview. This thesis considers the …

The data will be collected from authentic texts which are online news articles, published novels, books and magazines. The data will be explained using Conceptual Blending Theory (Fauconnier & Turner, 1998, 2002) to demonstrate the mechanism of meaning constructions between two …

The Sacred Circle: Ostension In Native American Hoop Dancing, Emma George
The Sacred Circle: Ostension In Native American Hoop Dancing, Emma George
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
This thesis examines the role of the semiotic concept ostension in folk dance, specifically in Native American hoop dance. Although the discipline of folklore is well-versed in ostension, folk dance has not been examined through this lens. I argue that dance is a form of ostension, of demonstrating a narrative, and this is especially apparent within Native American hoop dancing. I begin with a brief history of Native Americans in North America before discussing the origins of powwows, intertribal culture, and hoop dance. I then look at both the sacred nature and material culture of the modern hoop dance before …
"Gazing On Vacancy" : Charlotte Bronte's Critical Portrayal Of Church Life In Shirley, Emily Pataki Hamburger
"Gazing On Vacancy" : Charlotte Bronte's Critical Portrayal Of Church Life In Shirley, Emily Pataki Hamburger
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
This study endeavors to explore how the novelist Charlotte Brontë preferred inner religious experience to institutional religious conformity in her own life and how she promoted her own unique spiritual style in her novel Shirley (1849). Bronte was brought up in a religious home in an era obsessed with religion. Christianity seemed to have a stranglehold over small and large societal matters in Yorkshire, England where Shirley is set, but yet something within the spiritual community was lacking. The Luddite revolutions occurring in Yorkshire are a backdrop to the interior revolutions taking place in the minds of the characters Caroline …
The Legacy Of Jazz Poetry In Contemporary Rap: Langston Hughes, Gil Scott-Heron, And Kendrick Lamar, Madison Brasher
The Legacy Of Jazz Poetry In Contemporary Rap: Langston Hughes, Gil Scott-Heron, And Kendrick Lamar, Madison Brasher
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Langston Hughes wrote in “Jazz as Communication that: “Jazz is a great big sea. It washes up all kinds of fish and shells and spume and waves with a steady old beat, or off-beat.” In this paper I assert that the rap music of Kendrick Lamar contains the steady off-beat of jazz and carries out the rhetorical legacy of Hughes’ jazz poetry. By marking the key elements of jazz poetry and tracing their presence in rap music, I will show how these elements create a powerful aesthetic experience for audiences that primes them for the rhetorical messages of the artist. …
Fantastic Borderlands And Masonic Meta-Religion In Rudyard Kipling’S “The Man Who Would Be King”, Lucas Kwong
Fantastic Borderlands And Masonic Meta-Religion In Rudyard Kipling’S “The Man Who Would Be King”, Lucas Kwong
Publications and Research
This article examines Kipling’s The Man Who Would Be King” through the lens of Freemasonry’s interreligious ideology. In British India, members of “The Craft” offered what scholar James Laine calls a meta-religion, a fraternity whose emphasis on interreligious tolerance masks power relations between colonizers and colonized. When he became a Freemason, Kipling’s lifelong fascination with India’s religious diversity translated into enthusiasm for the sect’s unifying aspirations. In this context, “The Man Who Would Be King” stands out for how sharply it contests that enthusiasm. The story’s Masonic protagonists determine to find glory and riches in Kafiristan, a borderland region known …

Movement Upstream, Downstream: A Lyric Essay, Mong- Lan
Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies
Early on, without knowing I was part of a movement, I was part of the movement of the Asian American cultural and literary phenomenon.
Because it was necessary to bear witness, to tell my story, my stories, our stories, the collective story, my observations, which keeps on unravelling, I began to write.
From Erotic Conquest To The Ravishing Other: Imperial Intercourse In Shakespeare's Drama And Anglo-Spanish Rivalry, Eder Jaramillo
From Erotic Conquest To The Ravishing Other: Imperial Intercourse In Shakespeare's Drama And Anglo-Spanish Rivalry, Eder Jaramillo
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This dissertation examines how shifts in Anglo-Spanish relations from attraction to fear fashioned early modern cross-cultural encounters in imperialist terms. In discussion with recent inter-imperial studies of Mediterranean rivalries, I argue that as Anglo-Spanish relations engaged in what I refer to as imperial intercourse, one country’s expansionist ambitions become a double-edged sword, namely as said country is subsequently haunted by the threat of invasion from other rivals. This dissertation focuses on dramatic and colonialist texts representing the threat of invasion in the trope of the ravishing Other—a term with a play on words that illustrates the shift in …
An Apology For The Villain-Hero : A Study Of Christopher Marlowe’S Tragic Works, Yue Zhu
An Apology For The Villain-Hero : A Study Of Christopher Marlowe’S Tragic Works, Yue Zhu
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Suffering and death are the basic human conditions, hence the importance of the cognitive function and value of tragic art that re-presents suffering and death on stage. Aristotle’s Poetics is the first theoretical work in the history of Western aesthetics to comprehensively discuss the topic of tragedy. In answer to Plato’s criticism of dramatic art, Aristotle argues that tragedy “effects through pity and fear the catharsis of such emotions”, which are best aroused by the spectacle of a moderately good man who falls into misery not through vice but through some hamartia. By evocation of such passions, our emotions are …
A Rhetorical Analysis Through American Indian/Indigenous Tribal Leadership: The Rhetorics Of Four North American Tribal Leaders, Loyola Bird
English Language and Literature ETDs
I establish that there are American Indian rhetoric(s) still in place today, evidenced by the four tribal North American leaders that I interviewed. This dissertation project’s main focus was to examine their rhetorical practices and strategies, situated within tribally local, national and global political contexts. Tribal leaders are responsible for the management and leadership of American Indian/Indigenous nations throughout North America. Therefore, they must continue to create, utilize, and develop rhetorical strategies that enhance the art of persuasion for two different audiences (native and nonnative) for diverse reasons. The rhetorical settings may have changed slightly from when Sarah Winnemucca, Paiute, …

It documents the reception of sixteen books of poetry and five books of prose, from Theory of Flight (1935) to The Collected Poems (1978). A set of “Additional Notices” includes reviews that are less tethered to individual publications, such as “Grandeur and Misery of a Poster Girl,” which appeared in the Partisan Review in the fall of 1943. The bibliography excludes reviews of Rukeyser’s children’s books, of her 1945 play The Middle of the Air, and of her translations. Prominent reviewers include Horace …
Wherein To Catch The Conscience Of The Queen: Dystopian Politics In Elizabethan Drama, Helen Fielding
Wherein To Catch The Conscience Of The Queen: Dystopian Politics In Elizabethan Drama, Helen Fielding
Senior Honors Theses
Though established English history portrays Elizabeth I (1533-1603) as uniting England under the new Protestant religion, recent historical evidence reveals that extensive counter-currents still existed. This thesis examines how the politico-religious beliefs of Elizabethan and Jacobean playwrights manifest themselves in their drama, particularly through imagery and allusions. It draws especially from Frances Yates to assert that imagery of white magic, Christian Cabala, and alchemy in these dramatists’ works refers to the pure imperial reform movement of Elizabeth’s reign, and also from Clare Asquith to illuminate a reading of Shakespeare as a playwright who encoded in his plays a Catholic message …
(Fun)Ction: Developing Games From A Narrative Standpoint, Julian Barocas
(Fun)Ction: Developing Games From A Narrative Standpoint, Julian Barocas
English and Creative Writing Summer Fellows
My goal with this project has been to deepen my understanding of why people play games, how to make games narratively compelling, and what technical methods are effective in play. This has allowed me to investigate both the technical, scholarly assessments of board game dynamics while also exploring their real-world applications, successes, and weaknesses. Building on my research, my project has culminated in a full prototype of an original board game that has both narrative structure and an engaging gameplay structure. I have also produced a reflection paper on the experience and an annotated bibliography of my research texts and …
