Sebastian Faulks’ Human Traces:A Journey Into The Depths Of The Human Psyche, Essam Fattouh
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
Sebastian Faulk’s novel, Human Traces (2006), embarks on a new trend in contemporary English fiction. Through its representations of two main protagonists, pioneers in the field of psychology between the 1870s and 1918, Faulks traces the formative years of the development of the young discipline of psychiatry. Even though Faulks works in the realist traditions of Charles Dickens and George Eliot, yet he delves into such major questions as the role of unconscious motivations in human individual behaviour, the causes of mental illness, and the very attempt to understand the nature of the human being. The time frame of the …

“It’S Not Just About Improving My Spanish.” Student Perceptions Of Service Learning, Farah Ali
Global Language Studies Faculty publications
In the last few decades, service learning (SL) has emerged as an instructional model that facilitates connections between learning experiences in and outside the classroom, and highlights the socio-political nature of language use (Grim, 2010; Bettencourt, 2015; Moreno-López et. al, 2017). However, its effective and relevant curricular implementation remains a challenge for educators. This exploratory paper examines how SL impacts advanced learners’ beliefs, attitudes, and motivation towards learning Spanish, as well as their ability to connect their service experiences with course content. Findings show that learners evaluate service experiences through a proficiency-based lens, where the success of their experiences depended …

In this way, this chapter calls for a better understanding of the historical and political factors that impact the identities of Mexican transnationals of Indigenous origin. Based on data collected during three investigations with transnational (pre)service teachers from Indigenous communities in the Mexican states of Puebla (2017), Tlaxcala (2017), and Oaxaca (2018), the author analyzes the pertinence of Anzaldua’s framework in understanding the subjugation and internal differences of Indigenous transnational populations. Cadillacs N’ Poetry, Glen K. Waters Ii
Cadillacs N’ Poetry, Glen K. Waters Ii
Journal of Multicultural Affairs
This poem is a historical meditation on Elizabeth Alexander’s The Blackish Interior: Essays. The poem examines Blackness by expanding on historical Black movements in the mid-1900s that contributed to the mechanization of the Black body as a commodity through means of production. The poem uses the imagery of Black migration, lynching, evolution, mechanization, commodities, production, and death to bring forward the importance of identity and inner self-worth in a capitalistic society that benefits from the destruction of Black bodies.
