Keynote Address: Unlocking Africa’S Potential In A Time Of Competition Between Rising And Global Powers, Landry Signé

Proceedings: 2022 Global Voices on the University of Dayton Campus

Trade and investment are not just about money and prosperity. They also bring and support peace, stability, and security. In my book Unlocking Africa’s Business Potential, I explore key trade and investment trends, opportunities, challenges, and strategies that illustrate the tremendous potential of Africa and explain the complex competition between emerging and established powers on the continent. The following key trends are critical for policymaking, given their implications for trade investment, economic transformation, inclusive prosperity, and geopolitical dynamics in a time of competition between rising and global powers.

From Family Storytelling To Emancipatory Knowing: Bearing Witness To The Resistance Of Black Women Leaders In Higher Education, Eboni Sterling Mar 2022

From Family Storytelling To Emancipatory Knowing: Bearing Witness To The Resistance Of Black Women Leaders In Higher Education, Eboni Sterling

Dissertations

We, in the Black community, have preserved our existence and histories through storytelling. The blessing of stories passed from one generation to the next serves as survival signposts. Amidst this tradition, ongoing dominant narratives work to mischaracterize and dehumanize members of the Black community, specifically Black women. The unique and intersectional position of Black women leaders invites an onslaught of racial challenges in any sector. However, a complex relationship exists between Black women leaders in academia and the metanarratives manufactured by dominant groups. While often viewed as entertainment, the cultural practice of storytelling can incite empowerment and emancipation of the …

The Impact Of Women On The Life And Legacy Of Mark Antony, Lauren E. Yaple Mar 2022

The Impact Of Women On The Life And Legacy Of Mark Antony, Lauren E. Yaple

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Throughout the life of Mark Antony, the women he became involved with had a large impact on his political career, life, and legacy. These women, such as Fulvia and Cleopatra, used Antony as a means to achieve their own political, economic, and personal goals and were able to gain power in a very anti-feminist society through their relationships with and manipulations of him, affecting the career of Antony in many ways including his politics and his actions as a military commander, as showcased by the examination of primary sources from the late Roman Republic and early Roman empire periods. This …

New Directions To Promote Global Education On College Campuses And In Communities, Rochonda L. Nenonene, Karla Guinigundo, Sangita Gosalia, Furaha Henry-Jones

Proceedings: 2022 Global Voices on the University of Dayton Campus

In 2000, South Africa’s president Thabo Mbeki stated that the twenty-first century would be the “Century of Africa.” Indeed I, like many, believe that Africa is a continent full of promise, rich cultural heritage, blessed with a wealth of natural resources, and poised to become a hub of innovation and progress. Recently, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken remarked that Africa is headed toward becoming one of the world’s most important economic regions, and that it will have a hand in shaping in the future of the world. Recent advances have been made in solar power, the “green tech” industry working …

“Drown[Ing] A Little Bit All The Time: The Intersections Of Labor Constraints And Professional Development In Hybrid Contingent Faculty Experiences, Courtney Adams Wooten, Brian Fitzpatrick, Lourdes Fernandez, Ariel M. Goldenthal, Jessica Matthews

Academic Labor: Research and Artistry (2017-2022 archives)

Faculty teaching during COVID-19 have been asked to adapt to a wide range of instructional modalities that have often increased the labor they experience without commensurate compensation. Hybrid courses, which were already popular pre-pandemic, have become even more common as schools and universities have rushed to adapt instruction to students’ needs. This article reports on interviews with faculty teaching hybrid courses to investigate their perceptions of the labor involved in teaching in this instructional modality, drawing connections to the labor many faculty are experiencing as they adapt to hybrid or other, similar instructional modalities. It then argues that targeted professional …

All These Things We've Done Before: A Brief History Of Red-Power Inspired Projects, Programs, And Efforts At The University Of Nebraska-Lincoln And What They Can Do For Us Today, Jake Borgmann

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

The Red Power Movement from 1969-1975 inspired both Indigenous and non- Indigenous students and faculty from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) to work for the betterment of Indigenous peoples in areas of affirmation, education, leadership, and language preservation and revitalization. For a time, student efforts by the Council of American Indian Students, faculty sponsored Indigenous education-centered programs, educational outreach through television, and Lakota language courses helped carve out an Indigenous space on campus where Indigenous students could thrive and seek empowerment through education. This era of Red Power-inspired projects, programs, and efforts at UNL peaked from 1969 to the early …

The Evolution Of Participatory Culture Through Interactive Storytelling On Tiktok, Kristina Chapman Mar 2022

The Evolution Of Participatory Culture Through Interactive Storytelling On Tiktok, Kristina Chapman

Postgraduate

In 2006 Henry Jenkins commented how the media landscape will be reshaped by a bottom-up energy of media created by amateurs (Jenkins, 2006). This prediction can be seen when comparing traditional screen productions with the user-created content on platforms such as TikTok. Social media continues to prove Jenkins’s foresight, stating in 2012 how stories are shaped by teenagers “… wanting the media they want, where they want, how they want it, in the form they want it when they want it,” (Jenkins, 2012). TikTok shows a current platform evolved from the predictions Jenkins saw regarding participatory culture since the mid-2000s. …

Clash And Cooperation Of Ecofeminism And Postmodern Feminism: The Intersection Of Two Theories In Dystopic Literature, Ashton Koch Mar 2022

Clash And Cooperation Of Ecofeminism And Postmodern Feminism: The Intersection Of Two Theories In Dystopic Literature, Ashton Koch

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Ecofeminism and postmodern feminism are regarded as opposite theories in their attempts to solve for ecological and patriarchal oppression. This thesis argues that these two theories are not mutually exclusive, and must work together to effectively combat oppression faced by the environment and by women. It uses two works of literature, Our Life in the Forest by Marie Darrieussecq and Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood to argue for the combination of ecofeminist and postmodern feminist strategies. Both works are dystopic in nature, portraying the destruction of the environment and patriarchal discourse against women. Ultimately, this thesis analyzes the strategies …

Using Repeated Reading And Previewing Vocabulary Interventions With Elementary-Aged Struggling Readers To Improve Fluency And Comprehension, Khaled S. Alotaibi

Communication Disorders & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

Students with Learning disabilities and at risk for reading difficulties often face challenges in reading fluency and comprehension that impact negatively on academic success. Repeated reading (RR) is an intervention designed to increase reading fluency and comprehension skills among students at risk and diagnosed with disabilities. The purpose of this review was to investigate the effectiveness of the repeated reading (RR) and vocabulary previewing (VP) interventions on the fluency and comprehension skills of elementary school students. The review yielded a modest number of research articles published between 2008 and 2019. The results of these studies suggested that RR can have …

Decay In Educational System: The Nigerian Perspective, Itohowo Paul Ignatius, Iniobong Daniel Umotong Dr. Feb 2022

Decay In Educational System: The Nigerian Perspective, Itohowo Paul Ignatius, Iniobong Daniel Umotong Dr.

Journal of Graduate Education Research

Education is the bedrock of development in every society. In developing countries including Nigeria, education is conceived as the tool through which national objectives (such as nation building, social integration and economic development) are achieved. Although education has so many prospects for developing countries, Nigeria continues to be crawling with its education sector. It is against this background that this paper seeks to answer the fundamental questions: what are the problems facing the Nigerian educational sector and in what ways can they be mitigated? The national policy of education (1998) in Nigeria has five working objectives and philosophies through which …

L’Art Post-Catastrophe : Un Témoin Activiste, Michel Abou Khalil Feb 2022

L’Art Post-Catastrophe : Un Témoin Activiste, Michel Abou Khalil

BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
