The oxford dictionary defines “dichotomy” as, “noun: a division or contrast between two things that are or are represented as being opposed or entirely different.” In the context of Grand Island, Nebraska, a dichotomy exists in the development of housing. In the 1900s, sand quarrying began along the railroad in Grand Island. When the sand was dredged up from these quarries, the floodplain began to fill in holes over 5 feet deep, creating man-made lakes. As these lakes grew the sand could no longer be quarried, recreation and housing began to develop on their shores. The housing developments, in particular, …

Historically, landfills have been viewed through an environmental lens as sites for technical remediation, employing scientific or engineering strategies for testing, mitigation and capping. They are more rarely viewed as cultural landscapes, places with histories of habitation and use, or as potential sites for design. This thesis investigation examines the Shelby County Landfill in Memphis, Tennessee from a cultural landscape perspective, opening up a dialog and opportunity to think about this site and other waste sites in a more layered and culturally rich way.

The West Lake Pontchartrain region faces a number of long-term environmental challenges due to anthropogenic climate disturbance and landscape modification, including sea level rise, increased storm surge risk, shoreline erosion, and wetland degradation. In response, this thesis applies recent research in the fields of landscape architecture and civil engineering to propose a dynamic, natural-systems solution for wetland creation and shoreline protection. Versgggailles in New Orleans East is home to one of the densest populations of Vietnamese outside of Việt Nam. Following the Việt Nam War in 1975, thousands of refugees fled the country and several hundred were resettled in this neighborhood. Over time, community members rooted in a sense of home through tangible and intangible means in the landscape. Elders grow vegetables, herbs and fruit from Việt Nam in yards and vacant lots. In the last few decades, digital technology has dramatically altered how visual resource management and visual impact assessments (VIAs) are conducted. The recent emergence of low-cost immersive technology offers a suite of tools that could facilitate the VIA process. However, to date there is limited empirical evidence evaluating how these emerging technologies could influence VIA. Recently we embarked on developing an interdisciplinary pedagogical approach that integrates concepts of virtual reality and gaming design to leverage these technologies’ potential to influence how we interpret, visualize, design and analyze environments. The approach was developed as part of an advanced studio at Kansas State University led by two professors and represented by students across three different disciplines: landscape architecture, education and computer science. The entire project consisted of a core studio, buttressed by a seminar and technical module. The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, is becoming increasingly important to the field of landscape architecture, and universities need to adapt their teaching practices to prepare students to use this technology in practice. This article describes the creation of a Department-wide drone program to train students on the operation of UAVs and the other components that compose an unmanned aerial system (UAS). This program led to impacts in faculty decisions regarding projects, as well as broader curricular changes. This addresses the future viability of Critical Regionalism as an ongoing ideology and aesthetic construct. Regionalist trends in the early 20th century, around the time that CELA was founded, and the theory of Critical Regionalism as originally proposed in early 1980s are explained and proposed as flexible ongoing frameworks for teaching and design. Tracing the evolution and persistence of the ideas of regionalists breeds confidence for projecting the evolution of their principles forward to students of landscape architecture and to clients as adaptable verities worthy of perpetual renewal.

Due to the size and scope of rural landscapes, large-scale documentation methods are critical to advancing landscape conservation and preservation initiatives. Using an in-progress online project to document a 1935 US federally sponsored program, the Prairie States Forestry Project (PSFP), the authors show how diverse visual and textual data can be spatialised to construct a map reading of landscape change over time. This dissertation examines geographic forms of evidence in the practices of landscape architects and geographers. I analyze evidence not only as an epistemic phenomenon, but as an aesthetic one, as well. Convincing an audience that the world is (or should be) one way and not another requires that knowledges be stacked, extended, and stitched together in a manner admissable to an audience. Bayview Hunters Point is at the epicenter of environmental justice issues in San Francisco. The district has historically been the location of the city’s most polluting industries, as well as some of its poorest residents and its greatest concentration of public housing. As the city’s zoning developed over the twentieth century, the southeastern neighborhood on the bay became a patchwork of industrial and residential parcels of land, fueling spatial injustice, in particular a lack of access to public open space.

With rapid urbanization, environmental problems like green space shortage and urban flooding become prevalent. Identifying effective policymaking and implementation is critical in order to solve these problems. This dissertation addresses four theoretical topics in the context of urban green infrastructure: policy entrepreneur, institutional response to club goods, quasi-public-private partnership, and policy goal ambiguity. Each is exemplified by a causal case study. Data were collected through participant observation, field trips, semi-structured interviews, and crowdsourcing.

เมืองลพบุรีเป็นเมืองที่มีประวัติศาสตร์มาอย่างยาวนาน นับตั้งแต่พุทธศตวรรษที่ 13 แต่ละยุคสมัยได้สะท้อนถึงวัฒนธรรม เอกลักษณ์ ศิลปะ ซึ่งออกมาในรูปแบบสถาปัตยกรรมและโบราณวัตถุต่างๆที่ทรงคุณค่าและยังคงหลงเหลือในปัจจุบัน ด้วยทรัพยากรเหล่านี้ทำให้ปัจจุบันลพบุรีเป็นเมืองแห่งประวัติศาสตร์ แต่ด้วยในปัจจุบันเมืองลพบุรีมีการขยายตัวอย่างรวดเร็ว ส่งผลให้เกิดความเสียหายกับภูมิทัศน์เมืองและความสวยงามด้านทัศนียภาพ ทำให้การคำนึงถึงความงามของเมืองเป็นสิ่งสำคัญ เพื่อให้เกิดการรับรู้ทัศนียภาพของเมืองแห่งประวัติศาสตร์ได้อย่างสวยงามอีกทั้งยังทำให้ซาบซึ้งในคุณค่าและประวัติความเป็นมาของเมือง การประเมินคุณภาพเชิงทัศน์มีจุดประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาสภาพปัญหาปัจจุบัน ซึ่งทำให้เข้าใจองค์ประกอบของเมืองที่ส่งผลต่อสุนทรียภาพที่เพิ่มมากขึ้นหรือลดน้อยลงอันก่อให้เกิดความขัดแย้งในทัศนียภาพ การประเมินคุณภาพเชิงทัศน์เริ่มจากการทบทวนวรรณกรรมที่เกี่ยวข้องกับกับแนวความคิด ทฤษฎีการประเมินสุนทรียภาพร่วมกับการจัดทำแบบสอบถามโดยกลุ่มตัวอย่างเป็นผู้ประเมิน ซึ่งมีผู้ตอบแบบสอบถามจำนวน 200 คน แบ่งเป็นกลุ่มตัวอย่างชาวลพบุรีจำนวน 100 คนและกลุ่มตัวอย่างนักท่องเที่ยว 100 คน เพื่อหาสุนทรียภาพของเมืองในปัจจุบันและวิเคราะห์ปัจจัยที่ส่งผลให้เกิดสุนทรียภาพ ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ชาวลพบุรีมีการรับรู้สุนทรียภาพของเมืองในปัจจุบันน้อยกว่านักท่องเที่ยว และต้องการเปลี่ยนแปลงทัศนียภาพเมืองเนื่องจากปัญหามลทัศน์ที่เกิดขึ้น ส่วนนักท่องเที่ยวมีการรับรู้ถึงสุนทรียภาพของเมืองในปัจจุบันมากโดยมีความคิดเห็นว่าเมืองเก่าและเมืองใหม่อยู่ร่วมกันทำให้เกิดความงามที่ผสมผสานระหว่างอดีตและปัจจุบันได้เป็นอย่างดี ซึ่งปัจจัยที่ส่งผลต่อความงามของทัศนียภาพขึ้นอยู่กับองค์ประกอบการจัดวางตำแหน่งของสถาปัตยกรรม มุมมอง ระยะ สัดส่วนทรัพยากรทางสายตา สีของบริบทและรูปร่างหน้าตาอาคาร

พลวัตน้ำหลากเป็นกระบวนการสำคัญในการขับเคลื่อนให้แม่น้ำและพื้นที่ราบน้ำท่วมถึงมีความอุดมสมบูรณ์ และมีความหลากหลายทางชีวภาพ อันทำให้มนุษย์ได้พึ่งพาอาศัยทรัพยากร ภายในภูมิทัศน์ดังกล่าว เพื่อหล่อเลี้ยงชุมชนของพวกเขา อย่างไรก็ดีการพัฒนาและการควบคุมระบบทางอุทกวิทยาของแม่น้ำในปัจจุบัน เพื่อส่งเสริมการปลูกข้าวนอกฤดูและการป้องกันน้ำท่วม เช่น การสร้างคันกั้นน้ำ เขื่อน และประตูระบายน้ำ ไม่ได้คำนึงถึงพลวัตน้ำหลาก ทำให้พลวัตนี้เปลี่ยนแปลงและส่งผลต่อภูมิทัศน์พลวัตน้ำหลาก และการดำรงชีวิตของมนุษย์ วิทยานิพนธ์นี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ในการทำความเข้าใจโครงสร้าง บทบาทหน้าที่ การเปลี่ยนแปลงและพลวัตของภูมิทัศน์พลวัตน้ำหลากในพื้นที่ราบลุ่มแม่น้ำยม ตำบลกง อำเภอกงไกรลาศ จังหวัดสุโขทัย โดยการวิเคราะห์ด้วยระบบสารสนเทศภูมิศาสตร์ และการรับรู้ระยะไกลเพื่อจำแนกโครงสร้างทางภูมินิเวศ และพลวัตน้ำหลากจากภาพดาวเทียม วิทยานิพนธ์นี้วิเคราะห์ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างมนุษย์และภูมิทัศน์พลวัตน้ำหลาก โดยการลงพื้นที่สัมภาษณ์ และได้มีการรวบรวมงานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวข้อง เพื่ออธิบายบทบาทหน้าที่และนิเวศบริการของภูมิทัศน์พลวัตน้ำหลาก อีกทั้งสำรวจและวิเคราะห์การเปลี่ยนแปลงของภูมิทัศน์โดยมนุษย์ ด้วยการเปรียบเทียบแผนที่ทางประวัติศาสตร์และแผนที่ในปัจจุบัน วิทยานิพนธ์นี้แสดงให้เห็นว่า การเปลี่ยนแปลงภูมิทัศน์พลวัตน้ำหลากโดยมนุษย์ส่งผลให้น้ำหลากลดลง ได่แก่ การสร้างคันกั้นน้ำที่ขัดขวางความต่อเนื่องระหว่างแม่น้ำและที่ราบน้ำท่วมถึง ทำให้ปลาที่เป็นทรัพยากรที่สำคัญในตำบลกงลดลงไม่สามารถอพยพเข้าสู่พื้นที่ราบน้ำท่วมถึงได้ ส่งผลต่อการดำรงชีวิตของมนุษย์ในตำบลกงขาดการเข้าถึงแหล่งอาหารตามธรรมชาติ อีกทั้งเศรษฐกิจชุมชนที่มีฐานผลิตมาจากการทำประมงน้ำจืดถดถอย

วิทยานิพนธ์นี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาและระบุคุณค่าขององค์ประกอบทางภูมิทัศน์ของกลุ่มเทวสถานปราสาทพนมรุ้ง ปราสาทเมืองต่ำ และปราสาทปลายบัด จังหวัดบุรีรัมย์ ซึ่งประเทศไทยได้เสนอชื่อเพื่อขอขึ้นทะเบียนเป็นแหล่งมรดกโลกทางวัฒนธรรม โดยมีประเด็นการศึกษา ได้แก่ แบบแผนการตั้งถิ่นฐานและการวางผังเมือง การวางผังบริเวณและการวางผังอาคาร การควบคุมและการจัดการน้ำ และมุมมองและคุณภาพเชิงทัศน์ โดยศึกษาจากภาพถ่ายทางอากาศ ภาพถ่ายจากดาวเทียม เอกสารทางประวัติศาสตร์ การสำรวจและการสัมภาษณ์ผู้ที่เกี่ยวข้องหรือผู้มีประสบการณ์ด้านงานอนุรักษ์ ต่อจากนั้นแล้วทำการศึกษาเปรียบเทียบคุณค่าขององค์ประกอบทางภูมิทัศน์ระหว่างพื้นที่ศึกษากับแหล่งมรดกโลกต้นแบบ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งที่เมืองพระนคร ประเทศกัมพูชา ตามรอยอารยธรรมขอม จากแนวคิดหลักในการนำเสนอแหล่งมรดกทางวัฒนธรรมเป็นแหล่งมรดกโลก โดยมุ่งเน้นประเด็นเรื่องกระบวนการประเมินคุณค่าโดดเด่นอันเป็นสากลเพื่อเป็นแนวทางในการศึกษา พบว่าคุณค่าทางภูมิทัศน์เกิดจากการวิเคราะห์เปรียบเทียบความเหมือน ความแตกต่าง หรือความโดดเด่นเป็นพิเศษในแง่มุมต่างๆ ตามเกณฑ์การพิจารณาแหล่งมรดกโลก รวมไปถึงความครบถ้วนสมบูรณ์และความเป็นของแท้ดั้งเดิม กลุ่มโบราณสถานสำคัญของพื้นที่ศึกษา ซึ่งได้แก่ กลุ่มปราสาทพนมรุ้ง กลุ่มปราสาทเมืองต่ำ และกลุ่มปราสาทปลายบัด ถือเป็นแบบอย่างที่สมบูรณ์ที่สุดแห่งหนึ่งของอารยธรรมขอมในเรื่องการเลือกทำเลที่ตั้ง การออกแบบวางผังภูมิทัศน์ การควบคุมและการจัดการน้ำบนที่สูงและที่ราบ รวมถึงเรื่องมุมมองที่สำคัญ และคุณค่าขององค์ประกอบทางภูมิทัศน์นี้เองจะเป็นข้อมูลสนับสนุนส่วนหนึ่งในการขอขึ้นทะเบียนเป็นแหล่งมรดกโลกทางวัฒนธรรมต่อไป

ปัจจุบันผู้ประกอบการให้ความสำคัญกับการออกแบบภูมิทัศน์พื้นที่ส่วนกลางมากขึ้นเพราะเป็นส่วนหนึ่งที่มีอิทธิพลต่อการขายและการตัดสินใจซื้อโครงการบ้านเดี่ยวในเขตกรุงเทพฯ เพื่อให้เกิดสภาพแวดล้อมที่ดี น่าสนใจต่อการอยู่อาศัย ตรงความต้องการของผู้ตัดสินใจซื้อบ้าน และเป็นแนวทางสำหรับการวางแผนพัฒนาการออกแบบภูมิทัศน์พื้นที่ส่วนกลางให้เหมาะสมและมีประสิทธิภาพสูงสุด ขอบเขตการวิจัยคือโครงการเพอร์เฟค เพลส เนื่องจากเป็นโครงการบ้านเดี่ยวระดับราคา 5 - 10 ล้านบาท ที่มีหลายโครงการกระจายตัวทั่วไปในกรุงเทพฯ และมีจำนวนผู้ซื้อมากพอที่จะได้ผลสำรวจที่เชื่อถือได้ โดยงานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อระบุลักษณะความต้องการส่วนบุคคลที่สัมพันธ์ต่อการออกแบบภูมิทัศน์ พื้นที่ส่วนกลางโครงการบ้านเดี่ยวระดับราคา 5 - 10 ล้านบาท ตลอดจนเพื่อเสนอแนะข้อพิจารณาการออกแบบภูมิทัศน์พื้นที่ส่วนกลางโครงการบ้านเดี่ยวระดับราคา 5 - 10 ล้านบาท การวิจัยเริ่มต้นด้วยการทบทวนวรรณกรรมและแนวคิดทฤษฎีที่เกี่ยวข้อง สัมภาษณ์ผู้ประกอบการ ซึ่งมีตำแหน่งภูมิสถาปนิก สถาปนิกหรือผู้ออกแบบ ฝ่ายวางแผนโครงการและการตลาด และสำรวจความต้องการส่วนบุคคลโดยใช้แบบสอบถามกับผู้ที่ซื้อและกำลังจะซื้อโครงการ ผลจากแบบสัมภาษณ์พบว่าองค์ประกอบหลักของพื้นที่ส่วนกลางได้แก่ ทางเข้าโครงการ ถนนและทางเท้าภายในโครงการ สวนส่วนกลาง และสโมสร และปัจจัยการออกแบบภูมิทัศน์ได้แก่ การวางตำแหน่งที่ตั้ง ลักษณะทางกายภาพของงานออกแบบ ขนาด และรูปแบบกิจกรรมและประโยชน์ใช้สอย ผลจากแบบสอบถามพบว่าองค์ประกอบของพื้นที่ส่วนกลางที่มีผลต่อการตัดสินใจซื้อ ความปลอดภัยของพื้นที่ทางเข้าโครงการมีอิทธิพลต่อการตัดสินใจซื้อเป็นลำดับแรก โดยที่รูปแบบกิจกรรมและประโยชน์ใช้สอยของสวนส่วนกลางติดกับซุ้มทางเข้าโครงการมีอิทธิพลต่อการตัดสินใจซื้อเป็นลำดับสุดท้าย ข้อพิจารณาในการออกแบบทางเข้าโครงการ ถนนและทางเท้าภายในโครงการ สวนส่วนกลาง และสโมสร ควรพัฒนาให้เป็นไปตามพฤติกรรมการตัดสินใจซื้อของผู้ซื้อ โดยพบว่าผู้ซื้อให้ความสำคัญกับคุณภาพชีวิตในโครงการพักอาศัยในด้านความปลอดภัยและความสะดวกในชีวิตประจำวันมากกว่าเรื่องขนาดและตำแหน่งของภูมิทัศน์พื้นที่ส่วนกลาง
