This addresses the future viability of Critical Regionalism as an ongoing ideology and aesthetic construct. Regionalist trends in the early 20th century, around the time that CELA was founded, and the theory of Critical Regionalism as originally proposed in early 1980s are explained and proposed as flexible ongoing frameworks for teaching and design. Tracing the evolution and persistence of the ideas of regionalists breeds confidence for projecting the evolution of their principles forward to students of landscape architecture and to clients as adaptable verities worthy of perpetual renewal.

Urbanization and climate change have impacted the ecosystems of US cities. Impervious surfaces in the urbanized areas are a critical issue for both challenges and green infrastructure and can be an alternative solution to achieve urban sustainability. Green infrastructure protects urban ecosystems by reducing imperviousness by treating stormwater runoff and providing other multifaceted benefits. However, even with the great potential, its adoption is still discouraged due to limited understanding and guidance especially for the cities with a growth-driven policy. The research project examines the alignment options and feasibility of constructing a regional shared-use path (trail) facility in Ellis County, Texas, linking the cities of Midlothian and Waxahachie and connecting to the larger Regional Veloweb (Dallas - Fort Worth's regional trail network) adopted by the Regional Transportation Council as part of the Metropolitan transportation plan. The project includes coordination with key stakeholders, examining existing conditions, community outreach, and preparation of alternative alignment options for public feedback. The City of Arlington acquired the Blackland Prairie site in 1998 after a group of concerned citizens identified its value as possibly the last blackland prairie remnant site in the city. Encouraged by the Arlington Conservation Council, the land was purchased by the city to be held as permanent open space. In its current condition, the site remains in transition. Efforts by volunteers have helped maintain native prairie grasses on approximately half of the site. The eastern half however, has remained untouched since acquisition. Invasive grasses, woody and herbaceous plants continue to proliferate in this area, leaving relatively few native …

The Transit Oriented Development Report is a comprehensive review of transit oriented development (TOD) projects, literature, and guidelines in order to build a knowledge base in the subject and set preliminary recommendations for the Dallas - Fort Worth metropolitan area. The goal of this report is to produce a resource for North Texas stakeholders in both public and private sectors by studying planning, design, and implementation activities of selected TOD projects in local, regional, national, and international scale.

The University of Texas at Arlington (UT-Arlington) installed the first extensive green roof in the Dallas / Fort Worth area in April of 2008. The roof was researched, designed, and is being managed by UT-Arlington associate professor and landscape architect David Hopman, ASLA. The approach to the roof is in keeping with the professional priorities of landscape architects and is not a narrowly focused scientific study such as the green roof research at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas or the ongoing studies at The Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, Texas. Performative theory has been applied to many facets of social theory including economic theory, sexual orientation, and regionalism in architecture. Simply stated, it is the notion that a thing becomes what it purports to be through actions and behaviors. The term is applied here to landscapes in complex cultural environments with environmental features that are used to mitigate or even to enhance the environmental footprint of the landscape. These landscapes are a recognition that designers should no longer separate "natural" areas from the places where people actually live and work.

The published intellectual discourse on "Critical Regionalism" is more prolific in the literature of architecture and planning than that of landscape architecture. As a result, the existing parameters used to define regional elements are not always useful to landscape architects, particularly in rapidly developing areas in which there are few, easily recognizable, regional components to the landscape. This thesis uses the ideas embodied in Critical Regionalism as a means to reveal how selected landscape architects and landscape designers interpret the landscapes and architecture of Texas through their individual landscape design philosophies and methodologies. The first standards for the evaluation of educational programs developed by the American Society of Landscape Architects contained a call for the evaluation of faculty effectiveness. In the intervening years, there have been efforts by the various educational programs to continue to find the most effective methods for measuring faculty competence. However, to-date there has been no collection or organization of these devices used either by students, by peers or by university administrators in this profession.
