The ''Guide to Residential Landscape Development" has been written for the Logan City Planning Department as a supplement to the "City of Logan Guidelines for Development", a comprehensive planning tool adopted in 1976. The Guide is primarily intended to motivate Logan homeowners in designing, constructing and maintaining their residential properties by pointing out methods of design and construction that:

• reduce costs of electricity, oil and natural gas by reducing energy needs
• increase property values
• maximize effective use of the property
• improve the aesthetic qualities of the homesite

This study had two goals: first, to establish a need to use native plant materials for planting and revegetation of highway right of ways in Utah; and secondly, to develop a list of potential native plants suitable for highway planting in Utah.

To accomplish these two goals, three steps were completed. Correspondence was exchanged with officials of other state highway departments to determine their attitudes concerning the use of native plants for highway planting. This paper is the result of the adaptation and testing of the IMGRID Programming System acquired from Harvard University, for land use studies in the Department Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning at Utah State University. The system utilizes rectangular coordinate grid cell data for storage and analysis, and is now in operation on the Burroughs B 6700 computer system.

The operation of Utah State IMGRID is documented here to reflect the types of analyses which are currently performed in this region, and examples provided to demonstrate the system to graduate students and others who are interested in land use analysis. …

The landscape plant materials informational needs of planting designers were evaluated in a historical and contemporary context. It was found that plant designers need to know about the environmental and cultural adaptation, landscape value and use, and commercial availability of the plant materials that they use.

Surveys of regional plant materials experts and nursery inventories were made to determine which plants should be included in a reference text. The climate of the region is also identified and compared to other parts of the country.

This report is a local supplement to a wider-focused report on multiple uses of irrigation canals (Kennedy and Unhanand, 1974), primarily concerned with recreational uses. Increasing magnitude and variety of use generated several use conflicts, and the need for a closer look at canal-oriented activities arose. The intent of the study is to show local residents and planning officials the present physical condition of local canals and canal corridors, their present multiple uses, the importance of Cache Valley irrigation canals as recreation systems, and some possible future canal use alternatives.

Throughout the history of traditional land use planning, justification for allocating a land use for a particular area has been accomplished generally in a debilitated fashion. For example, decisions have generally been arrived at by (1) political process--incorporating fringe areas into present land use patterns, or (2) short-term revenue producers are given a land use change from a tax base incentive, or (3) revelations implemented, or other subjective justifications. Except in very few instances, data used to base land use planning decisions was not accurately interpreted for adequate input or not even gathered.

The workshops were based on a planning process which had been used in Wasatch County, Utah, to develop the Heber Valley Plan. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the potential effectiveness of the Rich County 701 Plan as a planning and management aid in controlling the development around Bear Lake. The success of the plan in integrating cultural data and natural resource data is judged on the basis of professionally accepted techniques of resource analysis and on the availability of pertinent planning data.

Guidelines for evaluating the land use controls for Bear Lake that will result from the Plan are derived from the shoreland ordinances of Wisconsin and Minnesota and the lakeshore experiences of New Hampshire and Vermont.

Utah Lake, located near Provo, Utah, is a lake of relatively low recreational development. There are certain inherent conditions that contribute to this situation. Four of them are, water level fluctuation, pollution, turbidity and the close proximity of other recreation sites of possible high desirability. This thesis explores these four problems and offers solutions and recommendations to solve or otherwise control their effect on recreation at Utah Lake.
