Friend Of Government Or Damned Tory: The Creation Of The Loyalist Identity In Revolutionary New Hampshire, 1774-1784, James Leslie Walsh Jan 1996

Friend Of Government Or Damned Tory: The Creation Of The Loyalist Identity In Revolutionary New Hampshire, 1774-1784, James Leslie Walsh

Doctoral Dissertations

The dissertation examines the creation of loyalist identity during the American Revolution. Two distinct identities were fashioned, one by the loyalists themselves and a second competing identity which was created for them by their opponents, the radical faction of the revolutionary movement. Both identities were created consciously and for political or economic motives.

The identity created by the loyalists through their actions and words is to be found in a close reading of the claims filed with the Claims Commission created by Parliament in 1783. The dissertation argues that loyalists self-fashioned an individual political identity, as part of the creation …

"We Shall Overcome" And Gangsta Rap : An Investigation Of The Role Of Music In The Civil Rights Movement And In Contemporary Urban Society, Christopher Yurchuck

Honors Theses

The non-violent protestors of the Civil Rights Movement found in their music, a sense of healing and of cohesion within their group, a group of blacks and whites alike, fighting the injustices of a supposedly just society. They used the Freedom Songs to express dissention with the system, to disseminate information to other movement participants, and to bind the group together. The black militants of the '60s in the Civil Rights Movement did not use music as a form of their expression; rather, their silence, an absence of music, said it all. Today, gangsta rappers are a fusion of the …

Partnership Of Necessity: The Anglo-American Intelligence Relationship From 1921 To 1942, H. Douglas Brooks Iii Oct 1995

Partnership Of Necessity: The Anglo-American Intelligence Relationship From 1921 To 1942, H. Douglas Brooks Iii

History Theses & Dissertations

Throughout the period between the two world wars, Great Britain and the United States were embroiled in an imperialistic rivalry focused heavily in East Asia. The strong sense of competition and mistrust between the navies of the two nations hindered the development of close cooperation as war became imminent in the late 1930s. This state of affairs encompassed every aspect of naval operations, including signal intelligence whose officials sought to forge a working relationship beneficial to both countries in the opening days of the Second world War. Old prejudices and outdated perceptions of national interest were difficult to overcome even …

Short- To Long-Term Trends In Hydrologic Drought Conditions In The Contiguous United States, Peter T. Soulé, Zhi-Yong Yin Jun 1995

Short- To Long-Term Trends In Hydrologic Drought Conditions In The Contiguous United States, Peter T. Soulé, Zhi-Yong Yin

Environmental and Ocean Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

Moisture trends are examined for the contiguous United States for recent 15, 30, 50 and 95 yr periods (1895 to 1989) using bivariate linear regression and annual values of the Palmer Hydrologic Drought Index. Linear trend slopes and corresponding p-values from Spearman rank correlations are mapped from a series of regressions to examine the spatial patterns of trends and how they change through time. For each mapped time series there are distinct core regions with strong positive and negative trends. Mean trends for the nation as a whole are positive for the 95, 50, and 30 yr time series, but …

The Entry Of The People's Republic Of China Into The Korean War, Yueliang Shen May 1995

The Entry Of The People's Republic Of China Into The Korean War, Yueliang Shen

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

China's entry into the Korean War in October 1950 took both its friends and foes by surprise and quickly escalated that conflict into the first major hot war since the start of the Cold War. This thesis analyzes the Chinese decision making process and the factors that led China into the Korean conflict. Official documents, statements, and speeches of American and Chinese Communist leaders between 1945 and 1950 indicate that historical mistrust and animosity, geopolitical considerations, and a breakdown of communications all contributed to the tragic showdown that caused millions of casualties. Extensively used for this study were declassified foreign …

Paratransit And Land Use: Facility Siting Considerations, Jones Ron Jones Jan 1995

Paratransit And Land Use: Facility Siting Considerations, Jones Ron Jones

CUTR Research Reports

This study uses written and telephone surveys of social service facilities whose clients include likely paratransit users to determine the extent to which the availability and cost of paratransit services are factored into facility location decisions. Numerous cross tabulations of survey responses are presented. The study also develops a classification of facility types based on their clients' relative use of paratransit services. The study concludes that the availability of transportation is an important factor in social service facilities' location decisions but that the cost of transportation is not. usually because of third-party payment of the transportation cost. The study suggests …

Vincentian Seminaries In Louisiana (1), John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D. Oct 1994

Vincentian Seminaries In Louisiana (1), John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

This is the first of two studies on Vincentian seminaries in Louisiana. “The Ecclesiastical Seminary of Saint Vincent of Paul,” located in Bayou LaFourche, opened in November 1838 after about a decade of discussion. The Vincentians had initially refused to direct it because of the financial burden it would place on them and because of possible disruption to their existing seminary at the Barrens in Perryville, Missouri. However, John Timon accepted it because educating candidates for the priesthood was a Vincentian work. The circumstances of the seminary’s founding are recounted in detail. The seminary’s life, curriculum, faculty, and finances are …

Is A Graduate Program In Leadership Studies Feasible?, Bill Sakkab

Honors Theses

It is the philosophy of the Graduate program in Leadership Studies that effective leadership education is built on two pillars: an interdisciplinary education and experience in leadership positions. Through an interdisciplinary degree program, students will enhance their base of knowledge about leadership and another chosen discipline of the student's interest. The Leadership Studies program is intended to be integrated with a solid grounding in another discipline of study that will include the following choices: education, history, organizational behavior, philosophy, political science, psychology, and sociology.

The Impractical Ideal Costa Rica, The United States And Central America Reunification, 1902-1932, Donald R. Lam

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines the motivations of Central American Unionists and the failure of their movement in the early years of the twentieth century. The existing literature attributes the failure of Central American unification during this era to U.S. policies meant to maintain a divided isthmus in order to economically and politically exploit the region. A closer analysis of the primary sources, however, reveals that union failed because of internal factors, and that Washington's actions generally favored efforts to rejoin the nations to reduce isthmian tensions. Attempts to reunite the republics failed because of regional and domestic political rivalries, weaknesses in …

Vincentian Pioneers Of The Mississippi Valley (1818–1900), Dennis P. Mccann

Vincentian Studies

This article pertains to an exhibit at DePaul University’s library that was meant to educate people about DePaul’s Vincentian identity. Dennis McCann discusses the history of the Congregation and of the Daughters of Charity in the United States and explains what the items in the exhibit reveal about that history. There are twelve groups of objects with themes that include: the Congregation’s early mission in the United States, the linkage of the American mission with its French Vincentian Heritage, Vincentian iconography, life at Saint Mary of the Barrens, the history of the Basilica of Saint Louis (Old Cathedral), the institutions …
