Difficulties In Diplomacy: A Case Study Of Relations Between The United States And The Republic Of Congo, 1960-1965, James R. Hawn Jr. Apr 1998

Difficulties In Diplomacy: A Case Study Of Relations Between The United States And The Republic Of Congo, 1960-1965, James R. Hawn Jr.

History Theses & Dissertations

As he took office, President John F. Kennedy articulated new policies sympathetic to African independence movements, but his policies turned out to be conditional. Aid continued to be granted to resource rich, pro-Western governments.

When the Republic of Congo gamed its independence, it retained its pro-Western cultural and economic ties with its former colonial power, France. Lacking natural resources and an industrial base, this country sought large amounts of economic aid from the West to sustain itself. France and the United States failed to live up to the Congo's expectations. Accusations of massive corruption sealed the fate of the government …

Climatology Of The Daily Temperature Range Annual Cycle In The United States, Daniel J. Leathers, Michael A. Palecki, David A. Robinson, Kenneth F. Dewey Feb 1998

Climatology Of The Daily Temperature Range Annual Cycle In The United States, Daniel J. Leathers, Michael A. Palecki, David A. Robinson, Kenneth F. Dewey

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Many researchers are presently interested in detecting long-term trends in annual or seasonal daily temperature range (DTR), and attributing these changes to anthropogenic origins. However, very little work has been done to confirm the mechanisms that are important to determining the long-term average annual cycle of the DTR. Therefore, the focus of this work is to examine the spatial and temporal difference in the DTR average annual cycle across the United States, and to associate the patterns of these cycles with potential causal variables. Three major types of DTR annual cycle exist in the United States: high sun season maximum …

Is it possible to look out over the Ural Mountains and see Appalachia? To find the character of the American West in the vast open space of Siberia? To smell the citrus and feel the warm sun of the Black Sea coast and be struck with a sense of Florida?

This book is based on just such an idea: that we can look beyond our borders and discover fundamental realities about places that transcend differences of culture, language, and politics. Five American and four Russian geographers wrote this book to provide glimpses of understanding about the United States and Russia. …

The Charism Of Charity Transcending Centuries And Cultures, Dorothy Macdougall S.C. Oct 1997

The Charism Of Charity Transcending Centuries And Cultures, Dorothy Macdougall S.C.

Vincentian Studies

According to Dorothy MacDougall, “the charism of charity has transcended centuries and cultures to the extent that our foundresses and Community members and lay associates have been willing to break through biases of culture to reveal God’s love to the world.” The charism requires “inclusivity, imagination, and risk.” She offers examples from the history of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in Kentucky that illustrate this. For instance, the Sisters removed segregation from their hospitals before the Civil Rights era. They also opened a hospital specifically for African Americans because they were not properly served or not comfortable going elsewhere; …

Do Pacific Islanders In The United States Hold “Good” Jobs?, Dennis A. Ahlburg Jun 1997

Do Pacific Islanders In The United States Hold “Good” Jobs?, Dennis A. Ahlburg

Pacific Studies

In the 1980s, the quality of the jobs held by Pacific Islander householders generally improved, while job quality declined for the average American householder. The factors that improved the economic position of a Pacific Islander household--education, work experience, and good English language skills-- were the same as those that improved the position of other households in the United States. Over the decade, Pacific Islander householders generally acquired more of these productive attributes, which helped them to find employment, get access to better jobs, and increase their earnings.

Synoptic-Scale Features Common To Heavy Snowstorms In The Southeast United States, M.L. Bentley, Thomas L. Mote, Douglas W. Gamble, S. Jeffrey Underwood Mar 1997

Synoptic-Scale Features Common To Heavy Snowstorms In The Southeast United States, M.L. Bentley, Thomas L. Mote, Douglas W. Gamble, S. Jeffrey Underwood

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Eighteen heavy snowstorms in the Southeast are examined to determine the synoptic-scale features common to these storms. Storm-relative composites in the temporal domain are created by assigning a "zero hour" to each storm based on the time of the initial snowfall at Asheville, North Carolina. The composites indicate the importance of warm air advection (isentropic upglide) in producing upward motion within these storms. Of secondary importance in producing upward motion are the right entrance region of an upper-level jet streak, diabatic processes, and cyclogenetic lift. The composites also indicate that moisture is drawn off the Gulf of Mexico to feed these …

Lights, Camera, Litigate: Lawyers And The Media In Canada And The United States, Charles W. Wolfram Oct 1996

Lights, Camera, Litigate: Lawyers And The Media In Canada And The United States, Charles W. Wolfram

Dalhousie Law Journal

Drawing on recent high profile cases in Canada and the United States, the author examines the different extent to which lawyers in those two countries comment to the media about ongoing litigation. He investigates various formal constraints upon lawyer comment, such as court-imposed publication bans and rules of professional responsibility. He also looks at the way in which lawyer behaviour is attributable to non-formal, cultural determinants.

The Sisters Of Charity In Cincinnati: 1829–1852, Judith Metz S.C. Oct 1996

The Sisters Of Charity In Cincinnati: 1829–1852, Judith Metz S.C.

Vincentian Studies

The Sisters of Charity arrived in Cincinnati in 1829 to establish a girls’ school and an orphanage at the bishop’s request. Both were named for Saint Peter and the school “was the first permanently established free school in Ohio.” Detailed history is given for these institutions, which grew constantly. The Sisters served hundreds of Catholic and Protestant children throughout the years. They also ran a boys’ orphanage for a short time until community policy changed, and they were nurses during several cholera epidemics. They “help[ed] to pioneer the growth of the Church in Ohio,” ministered despite anti-Catholic prejudice, and formed …
