Changes In Self-Sufficiency: A Feminist Approach To Literacy Program Evaluation, Marcia Ann Makris Jan 1996

Changes In Self-Sufficiency: A Feminist Approach To Literacy Program Evaluation, Marcia Ann Makris

Doctoral Dissertations

This research was a follow-up investigation of a federally-funded literacy program which was established to assist its participants to achieve self-sufficiency through employment. The program was designed and implemented in response to the federal legislative law, the Family Support of Act of 1988 (FSA), which mandated that states provide Job Opportunities and Basic Skills (JOBS) programs to "assure that needy families with children obtain the education, training, and employment that will help them avoid long term dependency" and "assist recipients to become self-sufficient." The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the characteristics of the program that …

Giving Voice To The Spirits: Storytelling In The Service Of Belizean Literacy, Gerald Joseph Kelly Jan 1996

Giving Voice To The Spirits: Storytelling In The Service Of Belizean Literacy, Gerald Joseph Kelly

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines the participation of indigenous storytellers in a textbook project undertaken by Belizean educators. A qualitative study of these narrators, who contributed both traditional stories and personal narratives, extended from February 1991 until February 1996 in Belize's Toledo District. Featured narrators were interviewed and audio-taped by the author throughout this time period, as they contributed their oral lore to the project.

This investigation reveals the complex interrelationships of anthropological salvage and cultural renewal. Certain contemporary scholars decry what they perceive as the limited pastoral dimension of salvage, which may suggest that the true value of traditional stories lies …

The Generation Of Predictive Inferences And The Availability Of Contextual Information, Michelle Lenore Rizzella Jan 1996

The Generation Of Predictive Inferences And The Availability Of Contextual Information, Michelle Lenore Rizzella

Doctoral Dissertations

Five experiments were conducted to determine whether readers generate predictive inferences when biasing context was available at either a local level (i.e., in short-term memory) or global level (i.e., in long-term memory). Subjects read passages that described two characters; one description contained contextual information supporting a predictive inference and the other description did not. Experiments 1 and 2 examined whether subjects generated a predictive inference when biasing context was locally available. Reading time differences in Experiment 1 demonstrated that subjects experienced comprehension difficulty when critical sentences were inconsistent with biasing context. Experiment 2 showed that subjects had generated a predictive …

Effects Of Gender Role Orientation On Responses Of Counselors-In-Training, Joanne Kay Urschel

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the effects of gender-role orientation of clients and counselors-in-training, and sex of clients on response consistencies of counselors-in-training. One hundred and twelve master's level counselors-in-training from twelve universities served as participants. Each participant viewed six videotaped vignettes of clients; each representing one of six gender-role orientations. At the conclusion of each vignette the participants were asked to write a response to the question, "What would you say next to the client?" Responses were categorized into consistency scores reflecting gender-role orientations of clients and counselors-in-training, and sex of clients. As hypothesized, gender-role orientations of clients and clients' sex …

Restructuring In Louisiana Schools., Sharon Lee Pol

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study employs both quantitative and qualitative techniques to study the restructuring processes at the district, school, and teacher levels. The quantitative procedures include surveys used to distinguish between teachers's perceptions of highly and moderately restructured schools. Qualitative research techniques included interviews, observations, and document analysis to describe the restructuring. A new instrument, the Attributes of School Restructuring Scale (ASRS), was developed to measure teachers' knowledge about restructuring efforts and their involvement in the restructuring projects. The final version of the ASRS, included 48-items spread across three subscales: Budget/Finance, Governance/Decision-Making, and Curriculum/Instruction. The quantitative results from the statewide study indicated …

Shaping Tomorrow With Research More Favorable Attitudes Toward Breast-Feeding As A Result Of Increasing Knowledge Of Benefits Of Breast-Feeding, Roberta J. Dagenais

Honors Capstones

The trend in breast-feeding in the United States during this century has generally declined and at present represents a little over half of newborn infants being breast-fed at hospital dismissal and approximately 20%-35% at four to six months of age. The Healthy People 2000 National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention objective to increase breast-feeding to at least 75% of all babies in the early weeks of life is not being achieved. Another goal of the objective is that at least 50% of the babies continue to be breast-fed to five or six months of age. The purpose of this study …

Teacher Preferences For And Actual Use Of Service Delivery Options: A Study Of Possible Influential Variables., Angela Michelle Waguespack

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Variables influencing teacher preference for and actual use of two service delivery options, consultation and referral for evaluation, have previously been studied in isolation using varying methodologies. In this study, several variables including teacher attributions, organizational characteristics, child characteristics, and classroom behavior were studied in a comprehensive format. The relationship between these variables and teacher outcome expectancies, preference for services, and use of consultation versus referral was investigated. Sixty-seven teachers (grades K-8) seeking assistance for a student with behavior problems participated in the study. Teachers completed a demographic questionnaire, and measures of attributions, perceptions of problems, outcome expectancies, and preference …

Deaf Students In Mainstreamed College Composition Courses Culture And Pedagogy., Tonya Stremlau Johnson Jan 1996

Deaf Students In Mainstreamed College Composition Courses Culture And Pedagogy., Tonya Stremlau Johnson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Composition theorists have already considered the effect of cultural constructs on writing students and have modified pedagogical practices to meet the needs of diverse students. However, disability has remained an almost invisible category in composition studies. This is unfortunate because our society has historically limited the access of the disabled into society, including the academy. Composition teachers need to understand deafness because poor English literacy skills are one culturally constructed attribute associated with hearing loss. The need is especially great now that legal and social developments are encouraging more deaf students to enroll in hearing majority colleges. Also, high-level literacy …

Students' Understanding Of The Interaction Between Charged Conductors., Chitra Guruswamy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation describes an investigation into students' understanding of the interaction between two charged conductors. The study consists of two parts. The first part is based on interviews and written tests conducted with students in an algebra-trigonometry-based physics course. Results from several tasks are reported. Two of the tasks involve a pair of identical conductors that are given an initial charge, are made to touch each other, and are then separated. In the first task, students were asked to predict the final charges on each conductor. In the second, they were asked to predict the final positions of the charges …

Honouring Young Children: Research, Curriculum And Practice In Early Childhood Education, Loraine Corrie (Ed.)

Research outputs pre 2011

Early childhood educators tend to be people who like to agree with their colleagues. Often we avoid conflict situations and keep the peace by being silent, rather than raising our voices in dissent. But rapid changes to the field, coupled with the explosion of knowledge in the 90s, have opened up new dilemmas and new challenges for teachers. If we are to meet these challenges in a way that honours young children, then we need to talk about our differences and diverse views in a spirit of trust and professional collegiality.

The Second Edith Cowan Memorial Conference on Early Childhood …

Boys' Participation In Junior Secondary School Physical Education And Sport, Lynn Embrey, M. Drummond Jan 1996

Boys' Participation In Junior Secondary School Physical Education And Sport, Lynn Embrey, M. Drummond

Research outputs pre 2011

According to social lore, boys are meant to be good at Physical Education and sport. There is, however, increasing evidence to the contrary and it is now essential to consider why boys drop out of Physical Education and sport. There has been a good deal of research and subsequent literature detailing the plight of girls' involvement in Physical Education and sport. However, a dearth of literature and research exists where boys Physical Education and sport are concerned. Out of research comes practical implementation strategies that can be adopted by teachers to create a more favourable learning environment. Extensive research on …

Business And Education: A Partnership Worth Investment, Keith W. Harkins

Theses

This thesis will focus on the potential benefits of a collaboration between business and education in an effort to prepare today's youth for entry into the workforce.

The number of large companies that are becoming involved with education is steadily increasing. Many business leaders have come to realize that business has the ability to provide human and material resources that would enable schools to significantly improve the education students receive.

Student internships may provide a method for both business and education to benefit from such partnerships.

The purpose of the present study is to investigate research regarding partnerships between business …
