Isabelle Bell To Susan U. Niemcewicz, November 16, 1802, Isabelle Bell

Liberty Hall Collection 1800s

Isabelle Bell wrote from Albany, New York to Susan U. Niemcewicz in Elizabethtown, New Jersey. Since receiving Susan’s letter of a very old date, Bell had sat down half a dozen times to respond to her but was prevented by some untoward circumstances. When she heard Julian Niemcewicz had gone to Europe, she hoped Susan would leave her favorite Elizabethtown and oblige her northern friends with a visit. Bell spent time at Cayuga Lake to visit with her sister Richardson who moved from Harrisburg to the country a year ago. She had left her young family in February and traveled …

Claimed Mrs. H was a “good republican” and had fallen into the measures recommended by the President [Jefferson] in terms of multiplying the human species. Nancy had been confined to her room since the beginning of …

Mary Ramsay To Susan Niemcewicz, January 29, 1801, Mary Ramsay Jan 1801

Mary Ramsay To Susan Niemcewicz, January 29, 1801, Mary Ramsay

Liberty Hall Collection 1800s

Mary Ramsay wrote to Susan Niemcewicz in Elizabethtown, New Jersey. Mrs. Armstrong safely delivered a little boy. She had been unwell for a long time and was restored to health. Congratulated Susan on her marriage to Julian, Mary had heard so many positive things about him. Susan was so “domestic a character” that the idea of being obliged to fulfill so many engagements would disgust her, although Susan was never interested in social gatherings as much as her sister. Mary’s brother had gone to Charleston for a few months. She claimed he was too much of a rover and feared …
