The Molecular Basis Of Imidazolinone Herbicide Resistance In Arabidopsis Thaliana Var. Columbia., Kanagasabapathi Sathasivan Jan 1991

The Molecular Basis Of Imidazolinone Herbicide Resistance In Arabidopsis Thaliana Var. Columbia., Kanagasabapathi Sathasivan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Acetolactate synthase (ALS) is a key regulatory enzyme in the biosynthetic pathway of leucine, isoleucine, and valine. ALS is inhibited by four classes of structurally unrelated herbicides viz. sulfonylureas, imidazolinones, triazolopyrimidines, and pyrimidyl-oxy-benzoate. To understand the molecular basis of imidazolinone resistance, the ALS gene was isolated from an imazapyr-resistant mutant GH90 of Arabidopsis thaliana (Haughn and Somerville, 1990. Plant Physiol. 92:1081-1085). DNA sequence analysis of the mutant gene demonstrated a single point mutation from G to A at the 1958th nucleotide of the ALS coding sequence (Sathasivan et al., 1990. Nucl. Acids Res. 18:2188). This would result in serine to …

Genetics Of Resistance To Preharvest Aflatoxin Accumulation In Maize Containing The Lfy Gene., Daniel Preston Gorman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Preharvest infection of maize (Zea mays L.) grain by Aspergillus flavus Link ex Fries and subsequent aflatoxin contamination is a serious problem, especially in the southeastern USA. Studies on the genetics of resistance to aflatoxin contamination in maize are quite limited, but a better understanding of this aspect is needed for developing resistant germplasm. The objective of the first field study was to determine the genetics of resistance to aflatoxin contamination in maize possessing the leafy (Lfy) gene. Seven Lfy synthetic genotypes were crossed in a diallel fashion, and the resulting 21 single crosses were evaluated for aflatoxin contamination in …

Volatile compounds from two protein-rich foods, crabmeat and eggs, were studied with emphasis on qualitative and quantitative determination of a wide variety of chemical substances including degradation compounds from amino acids, lipids and carboyhdrates as well as compounds derived from the packaging material and the environment. Boiled and pasteurized blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) meat samples were analyzed for volatile flavor components by dynamic headspace sampling, capillary column gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Fifty-three volatile compounds were identified in crabmeat samples. Levels of volatile compounds in both samples were compared and it was found that the boiled crabmeat contained higher levels …

Regulation Of Cortisol And Prolactin In Horses., Donald R. Colborn Jan 1990

Regulation Of Cortisol And Prolactin In Horses., Donald R. Colborn

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In Experiment I, stallion exposure to an estrous mare on d 2 caused cortisol and PRL concentrations to increase (P $$.05) on d 1, 3, 4, 5 or 6 when no exposure occurred. In Experiment II, cortisol concentrations increased (P $<$.05) within 10 min after sexual stimulation (SS), physical exercise (PE), restraint via a twitch (RT) and epinephrine administration (EA) but not during control bleedings. PRL concentrations increased (P $<$.05) following SS, PE and RT but not after EA or during control bleedings. In Experiment III, cortisol concentrations in geldings increased (P $<$.05) following EA, PE and RT but not following SS or control bleedings. PRL concentrations increased (P $<$.05) following PE and SS. In Experiment IV, sulpiride injection was used in stallions in an attempt to increase PRL concentrations. Prior to sulpiride treatment, concentrations of both cortisol and PRL increased (P $<$.05) by 40 to 80% in response to exercise; concentrations of LH and FSH also increased (P $<$.05) by approximately 10%. Sulpiride treatment stimulated (P $<$.05) daily PRL secretion by approximately 5-fold, and caused a decrease (P $<$.05) in daily FSH secretion whereas only isolated differences (P $<$.05) occurred between treatment groups for daily LH and cortisol secretion. At the end of treatment, there was no PRL response to exercise for stallions treated with sulpiride, but there was (P $<$.05) for control stallions; only control stallions exhibited a marginal cortisol response (P $<$.05) to exercise. The PRL response to TRH was increased (P $<$.05) 4-fold in stallions treated with sulpiride but was unchanged in control stallions. Sulpiride treatment did not affect (P $>$.05) the LH or FSH response to exogenous GnRH. We conclude that: (1) returning stallions to the site of a previous period of sexual excitement does not cause a memory-mediated rise in cortisol or prolactin; (2) cortisol and PRL are secreted rapidly in response to some but not all forms of physical and chemical stress in stallions and geldings; …

Factors Affecting Conceptus Loss In Cattle., Daniel Patrick Ryan Jan 1990

Factors Affecting Conceptus Loss In Cattle., Daniel Patrick Ryan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In the first experiment, the temperature humidity index (THI) was compared with pregnancy rates (PR) in bovine females under two different environmental cooling systems. The PR decreased if the THI was greater on the second day prior to or after mating compared with that of the day of mating. In the second experiment, the stages of embryo mortality in the first 40 days of gestation were identified in the hot and cool seasons of the year. At day 13 or 14 of pregnancy 27% of embryos were viable in the hot months, which was less than 60% at day 13 …

Functionality And Binding Of Washed Mechanically Separated Beef In Restructured Meats., Kyung Chul Koh Jan 1990

Functionality And Binding Of Washed Mechanically Separated Beef In Restructured Meats., Kyung Chul Koh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Binding and texture are important attributes of restructured meats which are dependent upon protein properties. Meat was pre-salted with 0, 2.25, 4.5, 6.75, or 9.0% sodium chloride (NaCl) and extracted with buffers (pH 6.0) containing 0, 0.6, 1.2, 1.8, or 2.4 M NaCl to determine total extractable protein (TEP). Increased NaCl level in extraction buffers increased TEP, but NaCl levels of 2.25 and 4.5% in meat interfered with release of solubilized proteins into extraction solutions. Restructured beef roasts of 0, 0.45 or 0.9% NaCl and 0, 0.225 or 0.45% sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) were manufactured with 10% mechanically separated beef (MSB), …

A Dss For Farm Management, Y Kashi Vishwanadhan Jun 1989

A Dss For Farm Management, Y Kashi Vishwanadhan

IIMB Management Review

Farm management is a decision process. The tarmer and the state as
decision makers at different operational levels have some what conflicting
objectives to achieve-the farmer has to choose between alternative use of
scarce resources - land, labour and capital and operate his farm to maximize
the net returns; whereas the state has to increase the agriculture production to
meet the demand of the population even at higher levels of input costs. It has to
take decisions relating to Support Prices for various crop products, credit and
input supply in such a manner as to ensure healthy progress in the …
